Love the way your eyes lit up talking about bike security. New York, New York. I think Bosch motors are probably the best and Bosch is a solid choice but here is my experience. As for Bosch support. This was my experience about a year ago in Germany. Bosch motor replacement is only guaranteed up to 10 years. This may have changed? My 2015 Bosch Performance Line motor gen.2 had bearing wear caused by water ingress which made it really noisy. The motor section was like new but considered out of warranty due to its age. Water ingress is actually a design fault that hopefully Bosch has addressed in their later models. Anyway, from my experience in Germany, every bike store out of the 5 or 6 I asked in Wiesbaden, would not work on a Bosch motor. Most are not trained by Bosch to do any work on the motor. They are only allowed to use the Bosch diagnostic software and install a new motor. Essentially, the bike mechanics were only prepared to unbolt the motor (three nuts) and ship it to Bosch who replace it with an equivalent new motor. Cost was estimated at about 1,000 Euros. My motor at the time was only 6 years old with only 7,000 kms. Luckily, I found an enthusiast expert (with relevant career credentials) who can be found online as “ebike-doktor”. He offers a simple youtube video showing you how to take a motor off the bike. (If it's out of warranty why not right?) So I did this, I shipped it to him and he replaced the bearings and attached specially designed seals to help prevent water from getting to the bearings. I was slightly out of my comfort zone. I seriously believe that no one should have to do this on a 3,000 Euro 6 year old bike just to avoid the $1,000 replacement cost. bike-doktor also sells new motors. Cost of my model was 250 Euros. This guy works 24/7 repairing Bosch motors. I had the fortune of talking to him on the phone and he's a lovely guy who's very passionate about helping people get their Bosch motors serviced at a reasonable price. I've since moved the the US and I'm glad I brought with me the new motor and a refurbished motor as a spare. I love my bike and its life shouldn't end because of poor motor support. I would now be very careful about buying Bosch again…. unless of course I was to find someone here in the States who also did repairs.

You hit it on the nail. Theft is the number one reason that deters people from using their expensive e-bike or bicycle when they won't be with the bicycle. So that trip to do errands would have to be done with a car instead of the e-bike or bicycle. While a e--bike or bicycle can be environmental saver for short trips, people are not utilizing it because of the theft problem. If a bicycle cannot be operable without user specific unlocking, most people would definitely use their bicycle more for errands and save the environment.

A lot of this stuff sounds great, but I worry about e-bikes having so many proprietary parts, especially when they need to be actively supported by the manufacturer to keep working. Whether you trust Bosch to continue supporting the product or not, it would be better if you didn’t have to because there was a thriving marketplace of third-party replacement parts. Likewise, software support over the long term has been an issue in other sectors, and I suspect it’ll be an issue here as well. You can buy a 30-year-old bike and ride it just fine after a bit of tuneup, but buy a 10-year-old IoT device and there’s a good chance it doesn’t work at all anymore unless it’s been sufficiently reverse-engineered. I wish manufacturers would document their communications protocols so that the community can keep their devices alive even once the manufacturer decides it’s no longer worth the effort. That goes for “smart” devices of all kinds, e-bikes included.

Totally agree. Hopefully 3rd party support and open source parts will become common place especially as the initial investment is so much higher than a regular bike which effectively has an unlimited life. I’m actually not a fan of too much unserviceable gadgetry because if it stops working it ends up in the trash.

ABS is definitely welcome, and I know families here in Victoria and Vancouver who will be happy to see ABS for their front loaders - but for me, increased security features is the most welcome. Vancouver has seen a decrease in bike theft, courtesy of 529 Garage, but Victoria has definitely seen an increase, and a very organized increase in some cases. What Bosh is doing is very responsible, hope to see similar developments from Brose and Shimano.

Again, great video. I would have wished you'd asked whether the ABS can retrofit. I did not went for getting the ABS gen1 on my bike, but with this much smaller form factor… I now would like to have it. Also, regarding the smart system, do you know whether it can be retrofit into an existing bike with like the Bosh Performance line CX? I know the battery has for some reason a new plug, but is it in theory possible without much work to just swap it all? He said mounting points are different, but how much? Lastly: for some reason your videos are always super low volume. Would be great if you could check the loudness of your videos 😉

The new smart system looks promising. The alarm solution alone is making me almost regret getting the Load 60 last year. I get that they can't make the new system backwards compatible, but i hope they have some nice updates in the works for those of us who bought the last gen Nyon or Kiox displays. I hope they don't go the Garmin route and purposely exclude new functions on last gen devises.

As for Bosch motor support. I believe the warranty is only 2 years. R+M frames have a 2 year warranty with the option of 5 years. Bosch claim to carry spare replacement motors for up to 10 years. This has probably been covered by Chris in other videos. Sorry if I missed it. My local bike shop here in DC claims to be one of the few Bosch certified mechanics in the U.S. Propel is obviously certified as well. As a Bosch certified mechanic, they are only allowed to run software diagnostics on the motor and battery and if need be uninstall and or install a new motor. This is also the case in Europe. To me this isn't really good enough. If I go ahead and purchase a $10,000 + R&M bike, why is the motor only supported for 2 years? And by supported, I mean the motor would not be serviced or repaired but instead replaced. The mechanic at my local bike shop said Shimano are training him to do more comprehensive repairs while Bosch go with the replacement model.

The ABS is an interesting idea. During one of my first several rides on my e-bike,I had to make an emergency stop on an urban bike path. I wasn't used to the responsiveness of my bike's hydraulic disk brake and did the over-the-handlebar break dance maneuver to the ground.

Thank you so much for sharing this information. It would have been so challenging to learn this otherwise. I'm especially excited by the ABS, accelerometer with notification for security, and the GPS tracker. Those are huge as the threat of getting one's bike stolen is a huge deterrence for many folks. And the fact that the GPS is charged by the bike's battery is so critical for giving more time for tracking (add-on devices now typically have a very limited battery). I'm not a big fan of their navigation on their display right now. Those who look at the Nylon display compared to the Google Maps experience know what I mean. It just feels clunky and inconsistent as you go along the route, default routes seem weird, and it's harder than it should be to customize your route. When you're going quickly on an e-bike, you need that navigation accurate and at the ready. It's just not there right now.

Great to see these tech improvements. I'm guessing that with Bosch's automotive brake background, ABS is not the sort of thing you'd retrofit on a car, and therefore not the sort of thing you could retrofit on a bike unless it was somehow factory-installed. Out of curiosity, do you know which bike brand(s) Bosch partnered with to create their demonstration bikes for display? I saw a Cube logo on one of the bikes in their promotional film, but I suspect they must connect with a few German manufacturers.

Great episode and I’m looking forward to all the technological advancements for the cycling. Anti-theft and ABS are excellent improvements & I can’t wait till the manufacturers perfect regen braking.
@babybirdhome
@babybirdhome Жыл бұрын
The biggest problem with regen braking is that there just really isn’t any benefit to it on an e-bike. At best, it recaptures only about 30% of the energy spent getting you going, and with an e-bike, the amount of energy to stop you, there’s virtually no benefit at all. The energy levels are simply not high enough for it to be worthwhile with all the complications and extra weight and expense that it would incur for proper battery management, thermal management, etc. Especially not with a mid-drive motor where there’s no way to drive the motor from the wheels without you pedaling, or without completely redesigning the drive train to allow reverse power delivery from the wheel to the motor at the crank.

That’s to enable it. Once it’s enabled, it turns on and off automatically when you turn the bike on and off or remove or reattach the display. I upgraded my Trek Rail 7 to the latest Nyon display and I have the lock mode stuff available and use it for my bike. It works great, although mine being not this latest generation, I don’t have the cellular notifications or GPS tracking that they were talking about here. But it does lock out the motor and battery which protects me a bit from theft (as long as the thief knows that the bike is completely useless to them if they steal it, which most thieves won’t know for a while).

@babybirdhome
@babybirdhome Жыл бұрын
You can already add it in the U.S. I have this system on my 2022 Trek Rail 7 after upgrading it to the latest Nyon display unit. I can’t remember if it was an add-on through the app or if that part was built into it, but if it was an add-on, it was only like $5-10 to purchase it through the app. The only thing you won’t get without the system they’re showing here is the cellular notifications and GPS tracking, because the system I have doesn’t have any of those features. But it does have the alarm and motor/battery lockout system that disables the Bosch systems without the registered head unit attached to the bike. And yes, you can get that system unlocked if you lose the head unit on a ride because it fell off and got lost or something, but only through an authorized dealer, which is going to check the registered owner before unlocking the system to pair it with a new head unit.

The problem with other manufacturers is the lack of support. They are quick to sell the bike but when things go bad you will be waiting and waiting and waiting. If you don’t look ahead where you are riding you’ll come off as the last thing you should do is look at screens fitted to handle bars Extra weight added is the worst thing you can do to a e-bike and ABS is extra weight as well extra servicing costs. ABS is yet another (expensive and unnecessary) device on your e-bike which is bound to go wrong at some point with your local bike shops not having a clue how to put it right. The best they'd probably be able to do is to replace it and the old one to be chucked away. Not good for your pocket or the environment. I haven't needed ABS on my (tuned) e-bike for all the ten years of I've been riding e-bikes or all the five decades, I've ridden bikes.

Even if it's not needed 99.9% of the time, that .1% can get you in deep doo doo, or decorated with road-rash. ER visits don't come cheap either. A known unknown.

@@jacquesblaque7728 Here in the UK, ER visits are free of charge and you’d feel cheated, having paid loads of taxes over the years, not to use it from time to time. I still say, ABS is an unnecessary and expensive gimmick.

@@gravelyc10 Neither has Bosch the data to prove ABS on a bicycle has any real benefits. Of course, we are all entitled to our own opinions.

@@mamadjun again no facts to back up your statement about Bosch not having data. Bosh would not go to the expense of creating an ABS without extensive research. Of course, your welcome to give your opinions.

these are only distraction for what really cyclist needs : a good bike infrastructure not another cash grab for industry, ABS won't help you when a car hits you. it's only a false feeling of security like helmet.

I agree that infrastructure is critical and you see me advocating for it, but I would argue that ABS is a worthwhile technology. I know many crashes which could have been prevented with it.

My bike have a GPS tracker and it was stolen from my home.I call the police and give them the GPS information so they can tracking it in live.The police in front of the thieves house,But the UK police is stupid,the just say they don't have Authorize go inside the house,they are not 100% sure in that house,may be next door. so they can't do anything. after 1 month,the gps run out battery.I loss my 9700£ rise and miller e-bike!
