In Al Gore's brand-new slideshow (premiering exclusively on TED.com), he presents evidence that the pace of climate change may be even worse than scientists were recently predicting, and challenges us to act with a sense of "generational mission" -- the kind of feeling that brought forth the civil rights movement -- to set it right. Gore's stirring presentation is followed by a brief Q&A in which he is asked for his verdict on the current political candidates' climate policies and on what role he himself might play in future.

The part of this week's reading that most stuck out to me was that Kalmus would've still made this change even if it wasn't beneficial at all to the environment because it made his life better. Even on a selfish level, he and his family are happier and feel closer to the planet and to each other after limiting their emissions. This isn't just to save the planet but it's a necessary lifestyle that we as a human body should emulate. This idea of systemic change that would benefit the planet and the people is a best case scenario win-win scenario and if we can recognize this problem, that action, with the hands, the heart will find meaning in this more satisfied life. Another very interesting and prominent point in this reading was the proposal of the carbon tax which we have discussed in this class before. To adopt something like this wide scale within the United States would be a huge step towards limiting emissions on a legislative level. This is only possible as a product of voting in those who are passionate about climate change and changing the political climate in America. America's heavy involvement in the amount of emissions ensures America's responsibility in fixing those problems and preventing them. World-wide travel accessibility multiplied the spread of pandemics and we've seen the effects of easily going from place to place for a couple hundred dollars but the effects on our environment are worth so much more. By raising that price for every carbon mile the price of the ticket will force many people to look for alternative options. That money should go to support the ongoing struggle of fixing our current climate.

The findings of this report suggest that it should be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of land degradation, climate change, air pollution, water shortage and pollution and loss of biodiversity. Growing all the crops to feed farmed animals requires massive amounts of water and land. In fact, nearly half of the water and 80% of the agricultural land in the U.S. are used to raise animals for food.

The difference with the central distributed fossil fuel to energy conversion like coal power plants is the emissions can be cleaned far more efficiently because you can use the large, immobile carbon capture systems. This wouldn't work on combustion engines. There is also a significant increase in energy efficiency through elec vehicles. The increased draw on the grid is an opportunity to update to more efficient power plants in general, thus increasing efficiency even further.

Certainly an atmosphere is important in keeping the Earth warm, but considering that our atmosphere is less than 300 parts per million CO2 I don't see how this heat is obviously attributed to CO2. Scientists do agree that CO2 traps heat, but, as I understand it, its an anti-logarithmic scale, such that the increase from 100 ppm to 300 ppm should only increase the temperature 1 degree. Not one degree per year, but one degree total. So my plea is still there, please show me some data.

My last point concerns the gross inefficiency of feeding grain to animals, then harvesting their meat or products (milk, eggs). This is why more than 70 percent of the grain and cereals grown in the U.S. are fed to farmed animals. It takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just one pound of meat, and even fish on fish farms must be fed 5 pounds of wild-caught fish to produce one pound of farmed fish flesh. The cattle alone consume a quantity equal to the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people!

The Earth would be too cold for humans to survive on it without the greenhouse effect. This is why the dark side of Mercury gets down to --210° C, it has no greenhouse effect to keep the heat in. Fede Widder It's VERY fucking simple. The colder it gets, the closer to the equator that oceans freeze; and this has been increasing for the past 40 years. The AMOUNT of sea-ice is irrelevant, since most of the South Pole is on LAND, while there is a thin-spot in the Earth's crust up north which is melting it near Greenland. IT's LATITUDE of ice that matters, and that's been getting closer to the equator ever since 1987. And when ice freezes, it RELEASES HEAT, which is the reason for the slightly warmer global temps... so it's going to be VERY cold when it stops, about 5 degrees C colder-- i.e. an ICE AGE.

Our taste for meat is also taking a toll on our supply of fuel and other nonrenewable resources: about 1/3 of the raw materials used in America each year is consumed by the farmed animal industry. Farmed animals produce about 130 times as much excrement as the entire U.S. population and is up to 80 times more toxic than human waste. Since factory farms don't have sewage treatment systems, this concentrated slop ends up polluting our water, destroying our topsoil, and contaminating our air.

The big difference between USA and most of the EU countries is that in Europe we teach us how to have a critical mind at school from a very young age. My teachers never imposed me how to see the things. I do believe in climate change and if some people think that it doesn't exist, remember that with or without it, we can't continue to live like we are doing now. The renewable energies will produce more jobs than the non-renewable ones.

You can get this information yourself by going outside and not freezing like you would in space. Im pretty sure all scientists agree CO2 traps heat the debate while it lasted was about weather any extra would increase the heat trapped. Your right in equal amounts methane dose cores more warming, but this is cancelled out by the shear quantity of CO2 being emitted. So there seams to be more opportunity to reduce carbon emitions but any reduction in methane will be more helpful

hmmm...sea levels rose from 1990 to present-.27 of an inch.....temps rose .2 a degree since the late 1980's.....avg number of hurricanes remains the same...tornadoes still avg around 1100 a year...though fewer EF-5's....no changes in the jet stream, still doing it's thing....all the major currents in the ocean are still in the same places.....avg water temps off the coast of cali still around 58 degrees.....volcanic activity is slightly up for the past 2 years ..as are earthquakes(and i mean strong ones over 6.9)..no holes in the ozone(if there was everything it went over would look like the Sahara desert)..there's 28% more ice at the north pole now, there's 32% more ice in Antarctica(that's in thickness and coverage)That info is also from Nasa, and the US Navy by the way.Polar Bears have increased their numbers by thousands.Crop output among farmer's worldwide have increased by 14%.Carbon Dioxide output has dropped in the US by 18% since 1980.I'm sorry but the Facts from all the weather data collected by actual scientist in the field do not support global warming.....it does support climate change which is a natural change that happens over decades and centuries.

There is absolutely good reason for the use of this moving phenomenon. This has never happened before in the polar bear's past. And it's absolutely atrocious! Would you like to die by drowning because your world is melting under your feet? You need to learn compassion. I suggest you meditate on it.

To all conservatives bashing Gore... What words does your leader, McCain, use to describe Al Gore? "admire... appreciate... proud... thanks... i'm with him... appropriately awarded with the Nobel Prize... in agreement with his sense of priority on climate change" Don't belive me? It's all here; watch?v=E3okBYFMOPY

You like to start new comment chains when it seems like I've stopped responding in a hopeless effort to make it seem like you're right to people who are too lazy to read more. The truth of this argument is that you aren't intellectually mature enough to understand that criticism and mistrust doesn't mean hatred.

You have to visit Brazil to see still real primary forests. Secondary forests really exists in Europe and in US, but even them are a very tiny part of what it was the natural forests that once existed in Europe territory. European economic system devastated many ecossystems and natural resources. Beyond that, after destroying its own natural resources and ecological systems, rich countries continued to keep this process through global commerce.

Of course you have to train under Al Gore's Dog trainer. You have to work for the USDA, Nebraska Game and Parks, US Army Signal Corps and Space Program to know it. The problem some of did the early work. The physical work and research. The politicians need to understand that some of us suffered.

Yes, and John Christy of the University of Alabama. Yes, there are a few who disagree, mostly with the 3rd point, that we're causing it. But if you could just review "Global warming controversy" in Wikipedia, you'll get a lot more info than I can give in this small space as to the balance, or lack of it, in this debate. I also recommend Dr Richard Milne excellent lecture on You tube. Peace.

And finally we get back to something worthwhile. Dawkins may not be a nice man in all of his opinions, but his position is supported by history. As he has said, if religion helps an individual, if it makes a person good or charitable, it's a good thing. For that individual. Religion, however, does not work well as a government system, and its presence and regimes that use "religious" systems have shown their failure time and time again though the destruction of other cultures (colonialism) cont.

It should also be added that hundreds of millions of acres of forest have been cleared to create cropland to grow grain to feed farmed animals. And all around the world, overgrazing by livestock leads to the extinction of indigenous plant and animal species, soil erosion, and eventual desertification that renders once-fertile land barren. And the commercial fishing industry is pushing entire oceanic ecosystems to the brink of collapse.
