It’s been over 20 years since I last towed a caravan. I’m definitely getting that itch again. Different world from when my dad started towing in the 70s. We just hooked the Sprite onto whatever car he had at the time from a Renault 12 to an Austin Princess and many others. I wonder how safe we were 😮

Oh we do love Dougal & Ted!! Bless them! Does Ted have that lovely puppy smell? Love it! Very, very useful Andrew, there's a lot to think about when towing a van. Need to be ok at maths! I wonder how many don't even think about weights and tow a van without even thinking about it?!! Makes you wonder. Anyway, loved this video, loads of useful info and you explain it all so very well, thank you! Can't wait to see where you go next! If you stay at Kingsbury again, just give me a bell ok?!! Ha!! Never he mumbles under his breath!! Take care, drive carefully and see you in the next video, love and hugs xxx 😘🥰🐶🐕

I’m coming over from the motorhome side having recently sold my Carthago. I think the market for motorhomes especially over 3.5t will dwindle in the coming years as drivers will need to take an additional test which most will be put off by. As a top of the range caravan and a luxury brand tow car will still be less than my MH. Been following Andrew for years and the videos are invaluable, keep it up and I will keep tuuuuning in 👍

Useful. Thanks. Been toying with the idea of changing the motorhome for a caravan. Also looking at a demountable caravan / pick up truck. For reasons I don't understand, they are rare in the UK. I looked at one recently which had an overheating problem with the pick up engine while carrying a demountable in a hot climate so maybe this is an issue when loading it to maximum weight.

Great video Andrew to help remind us experienced caravaners. The only bit I couldn’t see was reference to tyre pressures when towing. I always increase my pressures to the manufacturers recommendation but on asking other vaners and even my dealer they never increase pressures. I could certainly omit this as it’s a pain increasing then decreasing pressures. What’s yours and other viewers opinion?

Excellent advice, Andrew, thank you. I smile to myself when I think about how I bought my first caravan. I had to first get a tow bar fitted to my Ford Cortina estate. I saw a little two birth advertised in a local newspaper. It was old and cheap. I used it as a base when I worked away, and eventually lived in it in between houses. It looked funny when hitched up, the car being a lot bigger than the van. 😆 ilona

Hello, Thank you Andrew for all your hard work, we are just in the process of considering a caravan for holiday's. Haven't seen all of your vlogs as we have only recently discovered you but wondered if there are any uk caravan's or motor homes that have a murphy bed in them. We have seen them in the USA. Appreciate all your advice and expertise and enjoying the travelling with you, love Dougal and Ted too.

Just about to get into the caravan towing, still a year or two away. we've watch a few of your videos and are taken by the ease of use you have. Just a quick question, I know the EV6 has load to grid, were you using the cars battery to power the caravan on the site here? I have a tesla and will be looking for a tow car, would prefer electric but not many tow cars (with a good distance) to go for. thanks in advance Andrew, we'll be catching up with the channel as much as possible
@andrewjditton3 ай бұрын
Yes, I use the V2L to power the caravan, although I stick to LPG for heating and hot water purely as it's cheaper per kW/h when using public chargers for the car battery. Check out if your desired EV has the ability to power something through a 13 amp socket as not many can. I know that the EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and VW ID-Buzz can, not sure about Tesla models. Worth checking out. All the best.

The maximum caravan weight you can tow by law is the gross train weight ( car + trailer ) minus maximum permissable all up weight of the towing vehicle. Both found stamped on the vehicles vin plate. Anything else is just an opinion ?

Good video but I wouldn't tow caravan with MTPLM greater than your cars max towing mass eg 1600kg. Doesn't matter if you tow caravan empty and its mass ends up less
@andrewjditton Жыл бұрын
I checked this info with the technical department of the Camping and Caravanning Club before publishing it. The 'M' in MTPLM stands for 'Maximum', and the maximum is not a target! That said, it's a wise point you have raised and of course you would need to check with your insurer if you're worried, and this is where a ticket from a weighbridge would come in very handy. Thanks for watching!

So I think I have this right.. I want to tow a caravan with my Tesla Model X that has a towing capacity of 2,250kg. I am looking at the Adria Astella line so the smallest of those has an MRO of 2180. That would be the biggest caravan I could tow with that vehicle right?
@andrewjditton Жыл бұрын
For starters you'd need to tow it empty, but I believe that the dimensions of the Astella mean you'd need to tow it with a vehicle weighing over 3500kg (with the correct licence) in the UK. In the UK it's more of a seasonal pitch caravan. Your better bet is the Alpina. Cheers!
@Alex-ek5fb Жыл бұрын
Kia EV6 1,985kg + 1,600kg = 3,585kg, with the Navara it is slightly more. Is there still a 3,500kg limit on overall weight or was that abandoned by the government? My understanding is that in the EU the 3,500kg overall limit is still in force.
@andrewjditton Жыл бұрын
The law changed a while ago in the UK to relax the 3,500kg combined limit - do check out www.gov.uk/towing-with-car. Cheers!

Hi Andrew, always enjoy your videos, thanks so much for the info. I'm interested, as someone who recently bought a motorhome, did you ever think about going for a motorhome rather than a caravan? Thanks again!
@andrewjditton Жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, I weighed up the three options (caravan moho and camper van). For my kind of touring which is destination-based, the caravan won. Had I been more journey-biased, it might have been a motorhome. Do check out my video about choosing between the three. Cheers!

BEYOND THE VIDEOS
@Kamavagadoo Жыл бұрын
I always love your videos Andrew but I think this is too much for people who are considering a caravan for the first time to take in. I think more focus on the joys of caravanning would help and then people would be able to get through the various technical issues. My brother is just starting to think about caravanning but the mptlp/up-plating/nose weight issues would put him right off. More focus on the freedom and joy of travel would entice new people into this wonderful way of enjoying the great outdoors. Sorry to sound critical but the technical issues really scare newbies.
@davidmbell Жыл бұрын
If this is too much for people starting out then they shouldn’t be towing full stop!! It’s their own safety, those others on the road and the law…
@meanqueensuperscrimper8908 Жыл бұрын
If someone is not sure of the technical issues of towing they should seek out guidance from the experts. Go to a reputable caravan dealer like Adria, and speak face to face with someone who will explain.
@andrewjditton Жыл бұрын
If this is too much for someone then I'd rather they did not take up caravanning than leave a mangled wreckage of a car and shards of caravan remains strewn across the carriageway of the motorway - not to mention the human cost.
