If you are new to Motorhomes (or Motorcaravans) then join me for a look at our Motorhome. Our Motorhome is a Swift Kon-Tiki Sport 574, based on a Fiat Ducato, one of the most common vehicle bases for Motorhomes. If you've just bought your first motorhome or, you're planning on getting a motorhome and want to know what it might be like, watch this video.
For people who are not new to Motorhomes, please share any tips you have in the comments below.
A Motorhome or motorcaravan, is a vehicle of two parts, the motor and the home or caravan part. In the first two parts, I'm going to cover the motor and the home or caravan part. Then I'm looking at packing, driving, and setting up at a campsite and finally, generally what's it like to own a motorhome.

Just to add - speed limits are related to whether your motorhome is above or below 3050kg unladen weight, but, but generally it's easier to assume that everything over 3500kg MTPLM (max permitted weight) is going to be subject to the lower speed limits.
@firstmotorhome8024
@firstmotorhome8024 4 жыл бұрын
Good reminder Bob . I will need to check again but I think at 3850 MTPLM i need to stick to 50 on a 60 National speed limit ,60 On a dual carriageway ( even with a barrier ) and on the motorway 70 . Easy to forget these things ,especially after this lockdown 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Useful video, but I'm afraid you're incorrect about speed limits. It nothing to do with weight, it is whether your vehicle is car derived - for example, a short wheelbase Ford Transit is restricted to 50mph on single carriageways, 60mph on dual carriageways, and 70mph on motorways. ALL campers and motorhomes based on a van chassis have these restrictions.....

MyPbass www.gov.uk/speed-limits 😉😉 It specifically mentions the weight of motorhomes and you will see the difference in the speed limits .👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I think I remember reading the speed limits are regarding the MPW maximum permitted weight and a reduced speed applies to light vehicles over 3050 kgs, which means a vehicle rated at 3500 kgs is at a reduced speed. So a twin rear wheel transit pick-up or van must not exceed 60. But a single wheel transit can.

I remember when I took my advanced driving test we had to do a running commentary on the road conditions and traffic which always made you focus on your driving techniques, similar to what you do. Another tip I learnt was doing short shifts which means going from 3rd to 5th and nowadays 4th to 6th. It also saves fuel the smoother you drive and the less stress it creates for the passengers. I agree with you about enjoying the challenge of adopting different driving styles. Excellent explanation of driving larger vehicles for people new to vans, the key is to enjoy the challenge. Keep safe. Guy.

Nice drive, you passed your test lol. I was sidelined for a minute or so, did you mention turning left out of a narrow road - position is important otherwise you clip the kerb or worse. As for width, I remember the first time I delivered in Bolton Abbey and then had to go through the arch in a Bedford TK (7,500 kgs) I had been told it would go through but it looked very tight, made it through though

I suppose one of the scariest things for a new MH driver is that feeling of losing control when a lorry passes you and “ takes you air away “. But you soon get used to it. I used to drive horses to shows and having a tonne or so of moving animals in the back soon makes you drive smoothly with no sudden braking. I don’t mind cars overtaking but why do they need to cut you up and then slow down in front! Good series👍

Good video for the Bobfather 😁👍Driving a motorhome makes you take more time and consider things more, especially wider berth on turns / corners. I’d say it’s made me a better driver . I think if you constantly scan your mirrors it makes manoeuvring less difficult/ stressful. I prefer driving my motorhome because I’m usually going somewhere I want to go, whereas in my car it’s usually out of necessity.

As someone who is thinking about buying a motorhome for the first time, this has been a really useful and informative series of videos. What I would also find useful is if you could add some information on weight management of vehicle. During numerous reviews of vehicles you talk a lot about payload, but with little idea about how much all the equipment (chairs, awning, chocks, power cables, hoses etc) actually weigh, then it's difficult to determine how much payload you need. What is included in vehicle weight, what do you do with water before driving? Do you drain out water tank or leave some in tank for journey. If so, how do you determine level to drain down to? My apologies if this is obvious stuff, but would appreciate some further info, either by video, or reply to this query. Thanks
@BobEarnshawMoHo

The easiest thing to do is to weigh your Motorhome at your local weighbridge, with everything you take on a long trip and see how much it weighs, if you are under your maximum weight. kzbin.info/www/bejne/onzEi5Ztj9xmZtk

My husband amd I want to buy a motorhome (when we eventually sell our house - nearly 2 years and counting!), so this series is really helpful. We are very conscious of the size of the vans, but for us we are much more wary of the length of a van than the width. Trying to find a lay-out we think we will like is also difficult but we have been to a couple of shows and looked round dealers to try to get an idea. We had hoped to hire one this year to try it out, but circumstances do not allow that at the moment. I am hoping when you do the video about going to a campsite that you include the whole experience (including leveling the motorhome and emptying the waste - may seem simplistic but when you’ve never done it any information is helpful). Thank you for the time you are taking to making these videos, as purchasing a motorhome for the first time is quite daunting.

The noise from the engine is very much a function of how much sound insulation you have, rather than the mechanics of the engine. The engine in my Boxer is the same 2.2 litre lump that was used in Peugeot’s bigger diesel cars. The engine in those cars was both further away and had far better sound insulation. Sound insulation takes up valuable room and adds unwanted weight. Vans in the 60s and 70s were seriously noisy.
@BobEarnshawMoHo
@BobEarnshawMoHo 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this current van has better sound insulation than my previous van. That's why the engine sounds quieter.

A great series of videos. I have watched most of these as my only experience is in a camper van. You mention the rear overhang with long vehicles and I wonder if you have any advice for filling up with diesel at petrol stations. A video on this would be very useful. I intend to upgrade to a larger vehicle and I have learned a lot from your videos already.
@BobEarnshawMoHo
@BobEarnshawMoHo 3 жыл бұрын
It's not something I tend to film that much, just want to fill up and get going. It's not usually a problem, don't get too close to the pumps and keep an eye on the rear, swinging out, in your door mirror as you turn out of the filling station. I have avoided smaller stations where it looks way too tight. Height barriers are usually set for HGVs, so not normally an issue.

Bob, If you think it's a lofty position in the MH have a sit in my 44ton DAF XF Articulated Truck. It does get a bit disconcerting when driving around North London though! I will say that these modern trucks are so quiet inside not a squeak or a rattle unlike the MH!

Bob, very informative as ever. I know you and Jenny have had to postpone your trip to Scotland and the Outer Isles but, from reading lots of people's intentions, when Scotland opens up, there could be an invasion! Would it be possible - maybe using some of your old videos - to highlight the issues of driving in the Highlands and islands and particularly single track roads. It's generally not a problem with experienced motorhomers but can be for those less experienced or people hiring. Apologies for being a bit cheeky, but when you live somewhere where you go about your daily business on single track roads, it can be a big problem!

It's basically truck driving using anticipated movement of the traffic. It's advanced driving techniques which car drivers haven't been trained for and their failures are often seen when they tow caravans and end up having an accident. These vehicles, like caravans, are not designed to travel at speed. Diesel engines are the best engines for most vehicles because of their Inherent delay in responses, they pick up slowly and gradually in comparison to the petrol gas fired engines.

That driving position looks cramped, Bob. Will the driver's seat slide further back? You have a nice driving style -- keeping up momentum and avoiding braking and accelerating again is the best way to drive from every possible point of view.

Bob Earnshaw Thanks. Being blessed with long legs, I have found that at least one motorhome (Hymer 544 CL based on a Fiat Ducato) just didn’t have enough room for my legs in the driving seat. I have driven Bailey Motorhomes with the 140 and 160 engines, but not the 120 bhp, I think you may only need the 160 engine for over 3500kg. I have the previous Fiat 150 bhp engine and it is fine for my 3850kg plated motorhome and towing a small car.
