New Tool Day! Scherr-Tumico Micrometer unboxing & review

Found a nice set of scherr tumico micrometers on ebay. They are a fairly obscure brand of metrology tools. This set is marked as government property from 1987. They were likely surplussed during the general military drawdown after the Berlin wall collapsed. It's a neat time capsule and an excellent addition to the shop.

Thank you. Carbide faces are a real game changer for inspection jobs with all measuring tools. I find they are more important on calipers where face wear is more pronounced and they get used in dirtier environments. Temperature, after bad setup or dirt in the wrong place, is one of my biggest sources of error in measuring and production. On the grinder if you go too quickly, I can put a 0.0015 in taper into a 4 in part where the wheel and part heated up from not having coolant. The lathe will cut a couple thou taper over 6 inches as well if I try to push too fast. I usually let lathe parts cool for a bit before my finish pass and shoot for 0.002-0.005 oversized while they are warm, depending on diameter. Heat is less of an issue on the mill. Haven't figured out why. I think the thermal mass from the table stabilizes things. If you have a surface plate and a good indicator, put a piece of aluminum on it, put your hand on the part (without moving it) watch the part grow as you hold it.

​@Kev’s Can Cave Its pretty specific. No other trade I am aware of has the issue of just handling parts causes measuring error. However, if you dont make parts for NASA it doesn't really matter 90% of the time.
