We got the new tool for our railing project. A 10 inch Wen bandsaw. Going to see if it will cut up the small logs we want to use for railing on the stairs. Let's see how it runs! Best part, was under $300!

While I can appreciate the look you're going for, I would use a cold rolled pipe for the handrail and supports. It will likely stiffen the staircase as well. If it's black it will complement the black bands you already are using. Just a thought...
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
You can get a spiral rolled pipe? Seems like a custom fit for each stair case.
@michaelinsteon99463 жыл бұрын
@@ColoradoMountainLiving Oh custom for sure but I bet it will still be faster. For example kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4uphHV7a9urfZI

Good luck with the compound bends of those slats and keeping them under control while trying to make the right curvature.

Thanks! we need it. Perhaps thinner laminate may do the trick.

Wow thats about the size band saw I could use. Early christmas present for Brian! You can cut small logs if it takes a larger blade.
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
Right on! He just ordered a larger blade for it. We'll see!

Have you folks thought about putting up any snow fencing to deflect some wind blown Snow? I have seen Snow Fencing near some highways to limit the amount of Snow Drifts etc.....It's just a thought......
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
Yes. WE have some and have used it 2 years ago but the wind blew it apart. We are still thinking of putting it up in certain spots, maybe shorter sections will not break as easily.

I’m glad to see that Bryan got a good bandsaw. I find that it’s the most versatile and my “go to” saw in my shop and the only bugger, unlike a table saw, is the throat depth. Hence, crosscutting becomes impossible with longer lumber. For the larger pieces Bryan wants to cut, In feed and out feet tables/support and a holding jig to keep the log steady might make it possible. Just visually assessing it it looks like a 4” to 8” log might work. You can find examples of logs to lumber bandsaw jigs on KZbin. Ultimately a bandsaw mill is ideal for larger lumber. Wen = Ven like Wild = Vild (the old confocal microscope used in two of my former labs).

It seems to have a lot of potential. He ordered a larger blade, but we'll have to be careful if trying the larger logs

Looks like your on the right track Brian, If you do a l shaped bracelet clamped on each step and a place to clamp rail as you go it will work. I've done railing just like you are doing, gluing as you go. You are going to have to cover everything you don't want glue on ! I made a steamer once with a wallpaper steamer and a length of pipe that worked great. Good luck!
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
Great idea! Did you use green wood? We're nervous about the shrinking factor, after glueing as it dries.
@chipgoostree29593 жыл бұрын
@@ColoradoMountainLiving All the wood I used had been kiln dried material, but when you steam the wood it's adding moisture back into the fibers of wood. I don't think it matters weather it's dry or green at glue up time. The bending rail systems I have used are used quite often for curved railings on staircases around the world. Look up one of their sites on the web, a lot of good information.

Hi Amy and Brian, great purchase. I don’t know your skill level with a band saw or if you have used one before so may I suggest you be extra careful when cutting a round piece of wood 🪵 make sure it will not turn or rotate on you when cutting. It will bind the blade and possibly bend or break the blade and could cut you. Take care.

Ya you need a scroll saw that.

Nice saw, bet that baby wasn't cheap. If you can afford it, buy the best, your grand kids will be using it, unlike harbor freight. Think Wen has been around about 70 years. I'm 60 remember them as a kid advertising in popular mechanics magazine, quality machines.

actually the price was not bad , under $300. it's not heavy duty but we'll be able to do a lot of project with it.

Very clever making the strips. A friend in the Philippines had a curved staircase and it was solid. I mean it was massive, and no doubt it was a long long process to create the bend. It was impressive because of the size, but it was not a nice radius. Kinda piece wise curved. I can't wait to see the finished staircase.

It's an exciting project any way you slice it ;)
@hisimagenme3 жыл бұрын
Yep, we just got the same Wen! It's great! Wondering though... since moisture makes wood swell... aren't you guys worried the thin slices will swell and not fit back together? Sure hope it works is fun watching all your ideas! I can't even begin to wrap my head around a steamer that can bend by degrees while steaming... at least one you don't buy. I haven't ever seen anyone do it successfully without applying some bend in the actual steaming process. I've seen some great attempts though! Wood bending is a delicate science for sure. I really hope you guys pull this off...rooting for ya!👍smiles and blessings...
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
haha awesome! well we'll keep trying at it. Pine is proving to be a bit more stiff, but going to try green wood next. It will all get sanded down in the final step, so should even out the layers. Have fun with your Wen!

Very interesting, I would have never thought of making a mold and doing it in segments. So I suppose another video will be creating the mold. I guess your thinking to do handrail in segments and making the splice joint be between the balusters. I have another idea now I have seen this, so I will keep watching and if this doesn't work out maybe I comment with that.
@ColoradoMountainLiving3 жыл бұрын
We're not making a mold exactly, just using the inner radius of the stairs to hold it in place. We'll see how the wood is tomorrow.

...You could use it for making the "Round Tuit's" much easier !!........lol.. You will find ,many, uses for a band saw over time ..... lots of your craft projects. ,, along with the scroll saw.... ...now deep breath ... You need to rip the strips 1/4" or less** (should be very flexable) as long as you can find ,,, an 8ft landing will take about a14ft + length for the outside rail, ,,check with single piece,,(Maybe a stiff rope), a long single assembly is best ,, if you are going to lap sections ,, stagger about 12" or more each piece,,the less splices ,, (sections),,the more fluent the bend,,, lay out rail assembly pieces ,, use small roller ,, coat each side with glue (considering using wet wood ,, use exterior wood glue) stack together ....hand bend railing ,let pieces slide to create the laminated rail ,,,, could use balusters mounted as bracing to clamp to ,,,bending tightly against the outside ,, allowing for the bend to follow the treads....set inside first ,,pull outer pieces in to form rail,,,,,.let extend PAST first and last tread,, trim to length later....* FIRST*,, cover treads and floor with drip material to protect from glue displacement ,,going to get messy,,,maybe even waxed paper where clamps are used ..so you don't glue the clamps to the rail..... clamped in place on treads to create exact radius,,,,,NO STEAMING INVOLVED !! Need to keep pieces as dry as possible...if going to steam ,,maybe double set time... ..create bend in place ,, outside of tread edge,, clamp as needed ,, let glue set up about 2-3 days ,, considering using wet wood...and this will be a tight radius.. .. do finish shaping after installed securely.......🎲🎲 🤞🤞 ** ....seeing how stiff that pulled against your knee.... might need to rip into 6-8 pieces...to bend without breaking...it's not a flat bend,,it not only bends ,,but also twists as you go... ***...going to need 2-3 clamps per tread plus clamp blocks (scrap wood or ??).. ****...if rail pieces thickness consistent,, maybe could use a piece of pvc same size as rail thickness O.D. as form blocks ..rip in half then into 3"pieces ( half on each side ) to maintain shape under clamps...

get yourself some heavy poly sheets 6 mil, basically plastic sheathing on a roll then temporarly but firmly plastic in below the deck you can expand your work area if you put the same plastic down on deck it will work as a temp roof kerosene heater and bam200 more square feet to work and stage stuff . use screws and lathe strip to batten it to make tougher and removabale.
