The one number to note is that the Prius has had a colossal power bump. The previous Prius Prime PHEV has a total combined output of 122hp - this new one has 223hp, an increase of nearly 55%. Much more useful and one upon a time, hot hatch territory.
@toyotaprius793 ай бұрын
@@1958plymouth440V8 contribute that to Toyota's overall incompetence a d indifference to PHEVs. The previous Prius Prime PHEV had an all electric output of over 80bhp but that full power was not utilized with the engine. Potentially it could've had over 170bhp if Toyota bothered to change the software inside the motor controllers.

I have a Toyota RAV4 PHEV. I get over 50 miles on electric - apart from the winter .I use it mainly as an electric car from home. It costs about £1.20 to charge at home. I find if I leave about 10 miles electric range left in the battery it does about 52mpg in hybrid. If I drain it the does about 45mpg in hybrid. In hybrid it uses a bit of the 10mile pure electric range. If you completely drain the EV range the engine runs more. Great on long trips as I run it as a hybrid. I have had it nearly two years. I get about 42 mile ev range in the winter.

I'm increasingly struggling to see the point of PHEV's. If the bulk of journies are local a BEV makes way more sense. If your travel is a mix of local and regular long distance, a standard (?) hybrid makes more sense than a PHEV; lower initial cost, less to go wrong and not lugging extra weight around. It's such a shame as this new Prius is a good looking car but as a PHEV only it ends up being neither 'fish nor fowl'.

Not sure I'm sold on the new Prius being PHEV-only. That just makes it far less accessible to those who drive for a living (because PHEVs generally cost A LOT and need a home charger to make the most out of). My understanding was that, while Toyota made more and more of their lineup available with HEV powerplants, those models (e.g. RAV 4, CH-R and Corolla, in particular) are happy to sacrifice some MPG for comfort. Meanwhile, the appeal of the Prius was an efficiency first ethos (while being comfortable _enough_ for a driver), without compromising on practicality. That's why, in my opinion, there are still a lot of Gen 3 and even Gen 4 Prius models running around. Toyota going PHEV only just limits sales from a significant customer base. Hyundai's HEV Ioniq is no longer manufactured, and the Kia Niro is a crossover, so there's no direct competitor to the HEV Prius on sale any more.

Firstly I think your reviews are way better than anyone elses. But I think Toyota has lost the plot in the UK. Great it has physical buttons but who is the car made for? Taxi drivers won''t want a plug-in hybrid nor will they want the lower roofline. The same is true of other Toyota models. The previous CH-R just needed updated tech. I liked that model. The new one is a failure in my view. The Yaris Cross would have been great for people with young children but the doors don't open wide enough. And why does the UK not get the Corolla Cross? That is the only model that really makes sense to me in the UK unless you want a tiny car.
