We had the same problem on a 280 prentice knuckleboom, first the turbo, then a piston. Machine and engine had 19k hours on the clock. Bought reman 5.9 from local cummins dealer and it failed in 1200 hours. Tore down the motor and 3 cylinders were bored .050 and other 3 were stock, rod failure from imbalance was the cause. We ate the $8500 for the reman plus overhaul cost. Be careful when y'all purchase an engine for that tigercat. Good luck from east TN!

I ran tracks on the front wheels of my JD 648, definitely soaked up a lot of power, also wondered how much more strain it put on my running gear, I mostly was pulling wood away from my yarder so I was on a haul road or fairly flat skid trail, those tracks slowed down my turn time.

Ran a yard jockey truck for 4 years, had the 6.7 Cummins, I believe it was 167 or 190 horse, anyway, we ran the two trucks we had 24/7/365 the entire time I worked for that company, only downtime was for PM’s and regular wear items. Motors ran at 2800rpm all day, going from an idle to wide open with a governed speed of 27mph. It was at a drywall plant, so the flatbeds with product on them would be anywhere from 42,000 to 58,000 pounds. Those Cummins engines took every bit of abuse I could muster into them.

Skidder engines live in a tough environment. The heavy pulling lugging them down is so much harder than in a cutter or loader! 10k plus is pretty good. The first 635 my boss had came with an 8.3 Cummins but it wasn’t turned up anymore than the 6.7 that came later. It did burn more fuel.

I would work on getting a 6.7 block overhauled and ready to drop in, you’ll have to throw your injection pump and front cover on it if you use one from a truck, couple other things, may be best to just get the correct application ready and on a pallet, waiting on a rainy day , should be a quick swap.,

Wouldn't the tracks be more effective if put on the rear tires, where there is likely more weight and ground pressure, as opposed to the front tires, which I would guess are significantly unweighted because of the slope and torque pulling the front end up?

It’s even tougher when you have a nice new piece of equipment broken down, AND a big fat payment to make, keep your stuff duct taped, and bubble gumed together, alway be on the hunt and ready to pull the trigger when something to good to pass up comes along, the absolute worst time to buy equipment is when yours is broken, it becomes way to important to worry about price, or even some expensive problems., I think I would have a look at that Cummins and make sure it’s blow by .. and not something else, check egt’s with a temp gun,

When you loose a turbo on a diesel, you gotta understand that they are fueled for so many psi boost. If your tuned for 30 and your turbo only builds 20, you will over fuel the motor and burn it up! Those pistons could be burned with broken rings......
@whataboutbob79674 жыл бұрын
@UCW3c8Z-knW5Bp7MOljztfzA NO! you obviously have little experience with engines. Too lean will burn up a gasoline engine - too rich will burn up a diesel. Watch your EGT's
@scottwikman19444 жыл бұрын
This is true of an older mechanically fueled engine. The newer common rail diesels like the 6.7 cummins meter air flow and will fuel accordingly. That being said, our 635 is 8 years old now and is on its second engine so you might be on to something.
@whataboutbob79674 жыл бұрын
@@scottwikman1944 My machinist friend has a 200? Dodge, electronic, he had a turbo set up for 30psi, it shit out. he got the replacement but it was only tuned for 20psi. He was unaware the boost was gated lower. The tune he was running burned all the pistons badly in just a few miles towing - too much fuel! Watch your EGT's
@BKD704 жыл бұрын
On the old non-CRD engines, isnt' there a pneumatic line from the intake manifold running to the injector pump that lets the pump sense manifold pressure, and fuel accordingly?
@whataboutbob79674 жыл бұрын
@@BKD70 having boost reference will allow the ecm to correct the fuel but it only has so much parameter. being down 10psi boost is a 1/3 of an atmosphere. A diesel has to have enough blow thru to stay cool. A gasoline has to be rich enough to stay cool. Too much heat and the oxygen in the combustion chamber will begin eating the pistons, valves, head gaskets, turbo ect.
