I passed you yesterday morning, Oct 4th, when you were heading towards the farm from the 100 acre field. I'm guessing Shane was in the yellow truck not too far behind you. I was on my way to Durham to make a delivery. It certainly doesn't take very long to unload those trucks as you were back driving across the field when I came back through. I let out a couple blasts of the air horn but you probably couldn't hear it. Great video as always and congrats on the new/used tractor.

Hi. Good video. I worked for an electric utility company in northern Minnesota and we had many transmission lines going across swamps and soft ground. Our people called the "swamp mats" you mentioned "corduroy roads". In the early 1900s, the crews cut down the poplar and pine trees and laid the logs side by side to create a road that the trucks could drive (slowly crawl) over. It is hard to imagine the driver being able to maintain control and not lose his teeth or otherwise get hurt long before seat belts!

Brit here; I've been captivated by your videos. we have some large farms, but not on the scale you are doing and not in my part of the country which is very hilly and it's mostly dairy and sheep farming. Do you use contractors for your harvesting machinery? as it's specialised and only needed for a short time each season. Contracting is the way it's done here on the large farms and they work night and day to get as many farms done as possible in the short time available. I'm a retired engineer and I have had no experience of agriculture, but your videos are teaching me new stuff - love them.

Hi Molly! Have you considered spreading manure on the fields in the future? They look real good hilled up but the right side of the second field you showed with the drone looked a lot more sandy tan color and not the nice dark brown like the left side of the field. Love your smile and thanks for sharing : )
@BellsFarming4 ай бұрын
You’re right about the sand! It was also so dry. We can’t really use manure on potato ground easily because of the food safety regulations. There are guidelines you have to follow with amount of time the manure needs to be in the field before harvest and that doesn’t fit into our operation unfortunately. It would be nice to use natural fertilizer!
@Darryl6034 ай бұрын
@@BellsFarming Oh, right! I wasn't thinking about the regulations! Perhaps a different crop that could be plowed back in to the soil in the fall would help it if you have enough ground to rotate where you plant potatoes. I don't know. Just shop talk I guess. It's nice to talk with you. : )

I was going to ask how many total acres you farm but you answered that in another question. I was trying to compare your videos to some of the other sites you reference (one with 2800 acres) for differences in your processes versus theirs. I expect like most farmers your winters are busy doing lots of deferred maintenance which only get temporary fixes during the season. Your drone footage was excellent, as was your explanation of the swamp road. Have a wonderful fall; maybe work in a vacation?
@BellsFarming4 ай бұрын

@bobkopf2274 ай бұрын
Hi Molly and Shane, I’m wondering why you do so much plowing instead of just disking, does the ground get that compacted that it needs to be plowed every year? You do live in a beautiful part of the country. Thanks for sharing another great video.
@BellsFarming4 ай бұрын
We plow about 150 acres a year out of about 500 acres. I will attempt to answer this but Shane will chime in too I’m sure. Plowing the corn ground turns the soil nicely and buries the corn trash. This give us the right amount of fresh soil to form the hills and allows the corn fodder to break down in the earth. We will subsoil for compaction in the spring where potatoes were harvested the year before for compaction. Yes the tractor and loaded potato trucks driving on these fields does compact it very much. Shane will test the compaction in the fields to see what needs to be done for the season.
