In late September 2024, the portion of Columbia Pike that was permanently relocated will open to traffic. Signage indicating traffic pattern changes will be placed ahead of the reopening to notify the public in advance. The previous Columbia Pike alignment will permanently close and only provide authorized access to Arlington National Cemetery.
The following traffic patterns will change:
1. South Nash Street north of Columbia Pike will close temporarily.
2. South Joyce Street north of Columbia Pike will close.
3. The entrance to the Air Force Memorial will move from Southgate Road to Columbia Pike.
4. A portion of the Route 27 off-ramp, which heads west on Old Columbia Pike, will close.
5. Southgate Road will close from South Oak Street to South Joyce Street.
6. The previous Columbia Pike alignment road will be designated as “Authorized Access Only for ANC.”
7. The eastbound lane of Southgate Road, between South Ode Street and South Oak Street, will be closed temporarily. The westbound lane will be open.
8. A four-way, light-controlled traffic intersection will be provided at the intersection of Columbia Pike and Route 27 on and off ramps.
9. Pedestrian and bike access will remain open on the north side of Southgate Road, alongside the ANC boundary wall.
10. Pedestrian and bike access will open on the south side of Columbia Pike.
Arlington National Cemetery appreciates the public’s patience and understanding regarding these changes. The Southern Expansion project will enable the Army to continue the honored tradition of laying to rest our veterans well into the future.
