President Carter is the ONE President I’d most expect to see a funeral train for. The tracks still run to his childhood home and carry passengers. I’ve been on it, and toured his childhood home outside of Plains, GA

Same and I'm shocked they never gave him one especially following the same route FDR's funeral train did in 1945 at the end of WWII

Lived near that area for a while. Sadly, the SAM shortline railroad, doesn't have the capacity to support heavy trains. It's a preserved, light duty, excursion railroad. They no longer haul freight, nor have the capacity to do so. Because of this, the line is 'technically' abandoned, making it not viable for funeral train service.

The Carter funeral train was shot down by the state government. 10 years ago Gov Deal wanted to make a big grand event out of the procession and when Carter found out all the details from his staff he promptly expressed his disgust. Hence the toned down ceremony we witnessed.

I think it can only happen when train was as essential to nation building as being abled to eat ice cream and BKs on the frontlines. Just too bad these days the train corridors and its services are gutted since the start of the Interstate. (IIRC many towns to the west of the 13 colonies were essentially railway towns built with the railway being its lifeline and pulse but were slowly gutted by the falling industrial output and the rise of the automobile and the ease of truck shipping)

I'm a UPRR conductor with 20+ yrs experience and it was 2008 I believe and I had never heard of the UP4141 or had Forgotten it was even a thing, we were called on duty at around 22:00 out of Marysville KS on the ZSEME Seattle to Memphis Intermodel train. My engineer was acting like nothing special was going on that night just taking the Z train to Kansas city. We got in our crew van and headed to the east end of the Marysville ks yard and there it sat, The UP 4141 he said the look on my face was like a kid on Christmas morning as I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Our trip was Quick less than 2 hours to Topeka were there is a huge Rail fan population and as we were coming around the corner at the Sardo bridge remember it's now around 1am in the morning, the night sky became almost day with all the Flashbulbs going off. It's truly a simple trip home I'll never forget.😮

I went to the depot in Topeka, KS to watch Dwight Eisenhower's funeral train go through. My Dad had served under Ike in the ETO so it was important for me since Dad had died almost 20 years before. It was a blustery March night. Hundreds of people had showed up and we were all milling around drinking coffee, smoking, and chatting. However, as the train approached, there was absolute silence. Men removed their hats and came to attention. It was a very moving experience.

I was one of about 2,000 well wishers at the C&O station in Charlottesville as the train stopped there for a crew change. It was called "the secret train that everyone knew about." The planning had been a military secret, but when national television showed a primarily C&O train departing southbound from Washington's Union Station, I could make an educated guess that it would pass through Charlottesville about three hours later. I learned later that Secret Service agents, along with state and local police, were shadowing the route all the way to Kansas.

Thank you. An interesting followup would be to go into the importance of campaigning or "stumping" from the backs or trains. I understand this used to be common practice. My mother told me that in her generation when Roosevelt's funeral train passed by, large crowds gathered with hand salutes, hands over hearts, and tears as his train passed by; he was very beloved at that time. I remember when I was a small boy when my father took me to DC on a cold, rainy November day as we watched President Kennedy's caisson come rolling by. It was the only time I saw a tear in my father's eye. My father is long gone but, he was in the same graduating class with Jimmy Carter at the Navel Academy.

Intresting compilation, thank you. Funeral trains with mortuary stations and train lines became popular in the mid 1800's as central city areas had limited space for cemetaries. London had one from Waterloo station to suburban Brookwood. Sydney (Australia) has a magnificent station adjacent to Sydney Central that has been well maintained. Trains used to convey the dead to Rookwood in western suburbs where there was also a lovely achitectural structure. The latter was removed and became a church in the National Capital, Canberra

We have one more preserved Presidential Locomotive, my friend. Pennsylvania Railroad class K4s 3750. Built at home at the Pennsy's own Juniata Shops in 1920. She pulled President William Harding's campaign train and later funeral train. Retired in 1956, she was briefly displayed as prototype 1737 which was supposed to be displayed but was in poor condition. Eventually, she was given her number back and is now displayed in Strasburg at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, and is a mate to the 1361 which is being restored to operating condition in the heart of the PRR: Altoona, Pennsylvania. 1361 and 3750 are the Official Steam Locomotives for the State of Pennsylvania.

An interesting note about FDR's funeral train when it went from DC to Hyde park for the burial is that it carried most of the government. President Harry Truman was on it along with most of the Supreme Court, cabinet members and many senators and congressmen. Such a thing would NEVER be allowed today. Also, I thought FDR's presidential pullman rail car was called the 'Ferdinand Magellan' and it's at a rail museum in Florida where it can be toured by the public. Truman used it as well. Because of World War II it was very heavily armored and even contained and escape hatch. I read that it was so heavy because of the armor, railroad engineers hated to have to pull it behind their trains as it created problems. I wonder where the 'Marco Polo' came in to play?

If Carter had a funeral train, I don’t necessarily think it would be pulled by NS Diesels but will be hauled by N&W 611. But in this day there would be flaws considering 611 working that excursion wouldn’t be good for the environment and the entire 2024 without anything going on with 611. It would be cool to see 611 pulling that but NS Diesels are gonna have to haul it and besides it wouldn’t even happen in the first place considering what Carter said

Mrs. Eisenhower, due to an inner ear condition, could not fly. Hence, his remains were transported by train. Originally, the baggage car carrying his remains was not marked. Mid-route, at Mrs. Eisenhower's request, the car was draped with black bunting so observers would know which car contained his remains. President Roosevelt's train was stored in Atlanta while he was in Warm Springs. The engine had to be put on the rear of the train at a wye north of Warm Springs and the train was backed into the station. Original plans were to "shotgun" the train from Warm Springs to Washington. Mrs. Roosevelt requested it move at a slower pace. Southern Railways agreed when it became apparent how many people were lining the tracks. Multiple engines were used; it was easier (and more dignified) to switch engines than to stop at coal and water towers. The Pullman "Connault" was used to carry FDR's remains. Due to the armored construction of the presidential rail car, his casket would not fit through the doors.

It's a we'll known story that all the years he was a single parent serving in the the Senate, he commuted back and forth by train on a daily basis so he could be in the Senate and still go home to his kids at night. When he left office after being V.P., rather than go to the airport to fly home, they went instead to the train station and went back to Delaware via rail.
