Let's fix this TDI!
This video is the first of a small series about installing some upgrades on my rock crawling TJ. First we need to pull apart the motor for an inspection. Then we need to adapt it to our new Tremec 4050 from Silver Sport Transmission. Then it's time for some Nitrous!
Nos is outstanding in diesel applications but we will tackle that in a future video.

Keep in mind that when you're doing a compression test by turning it over by hand you will likely get much smaller compression numbers than if you turned it over on the starter. Gold standard is always consistency between cylinders, not absolute numbers since there's so much difference in testing methodologies. Either way love seeing more work on the TDI TJ! Best of luck! 👍

maybe, metoo use starter but, if you check manually, is not bad because , before disassembles. I think it's possible to hear many sounds, and feeeling if turn free. and good reference to check after rebuild, difference et anomaly. save job , not sur, i think. nate comfirm ? and diesel compression very high, 1hit, same on each cyl why not. after rebuild, he need to run before testing real compresson, for sure that part feel good

Hello Nate, TDIs are complex engines. The less you take apart, the less trouble you get. Keep the bottom end as it is. Inspect the oil pan and the pickup. If there are no traces of metal chips just keep the bottom end bolted together. The white smoke tells you it was an injector problem (there is a very special smell of non burned diesel). Make sure the cylinder head is straight. If it is bent source a new one! No chance to fix it! The best move was to send the injectors to a shop to bench test them. Put it all together with new gaskets and hardware and fingers crossed.

Disassemble the motor completely. Deck the block and head to ensure both are true. Replace the head bolts with studs. Think about adding a Provent 200 to ensure oil from crankcase stays out of the intake. Inspect the pistons to make sure you are not cracking piston from pin boss up to and through the ring lands. Have seen this on tuned 2.8 Duramax. Also check conrod bearings as have seen abnormal wear there as well. And have fun! Family first!

If you’re pulling into a gas station and the big tanker is there filling the stations tanks go to a different fuel station. The bad stuff usually settles at the bottom but when they are putting fresh fuel in the tanks it gets everything moving around.
@k2mslskier
@k2mslskier 2 жыл бұрын
I deliver fuel and I can tell you most stations their fuel doesn’t last long enough for it to get “old”. Stations get fuel every few days. Plus usually there’s less than 1000 gallons left in the tank when I’m dropping 8500 gallons on top of it. That 1000 gallons of maybe 3 day old does nothing to that 8500.

Look into doing fire rings on the head to better clamp the head gasket. To limit a blown out head gasket. We do it on the bigger truck diesels with more boost. And i would suggest having the head milled flat so your 100% sure it's going to seal uniformly even across the block.

Nate, it won't be a ring. Don't tear the bottom end down until you hear about your injectors. You either have a leaking injector tip causing that wet cylinder, or if it isn't that then you have a bent rod lowering your compression on that cylinder.

I don’t think I’d put NOS on that since it seems sensitive to over-rev. I’d consider water-methanol injection, it’ll bring down your EGT and give you some more power. I had a Snow Performance kit on my Cummins, it was pretty great.

A 45 shot will be a pretty small favor to ask of this motor 😁 Water meth is great and I will use it eventually but it doesn't do much in terms of power in a tdi. My big hp tdi build will definitely get water meth for egts as well as nos but the water meth will only add 15-20 hp
@sojer6mile
@sojer6mile 2 жыл бұрын
@@bravowhiskey4684 what I disagree with is it's sensitive to over revving. Bearings & rings are relatively cheap under 300 bucks I assume. I suggest because it's adding a bit more reliability in it not power.... I'm a hemi guy, a good cammed 392 would give him more power u could ever want lol

Assuming you have BRM since it's out an 06...My BRM had 285K on it when I sold it, its still going strong with current owner. I'd be amazed if you have bottom end issues. The biggest problem the the BRM & BEW pumpe duese is cam/cam bearing failure due to wear. Number 2 is the VGT actuator only serviced with the turbo. Then injectors. Before you throw NOS at it do yourself a favor & make sure you have a 3 BAR MAP sensor & a better turbo with a "dumb actuator" instead of the electronic actuator for the VGT. The PD140, Garrett 14mm euro spec, is a good option before going with a crazy big HP setup. The Colt cam works really well with the PD140/3 BAR setup too but obviously needs a tune.

It's torn apart, so it's cheap insurance to make sure the bottom end is good. That dark on the block suggests to me that a gasket leaked, a head warped, and/or a head bolt got loosened up and the threads won't hold it down good enough.

At Moab, jeep had black smoke, so burning excess fuel, fuel throttle issue. Startup video has blue smoke, so burning oil. I'd be replacing value stem seals, sometimes you get a little oil that drips past seal when motor is stationary for period of time (eg overnight), at start up that little bit of oil burns off (blue smoke), then exhaust goes normal (no smoke). While you have the motor out, its a cheap replacement on an item that can give you way to much trouble.

Interestingly enough every diesel head gasket leak I’ve seen causing coolant to push out the overflow because of the compression leaking into the coolant ports . 100 percent injector I’m leaning to . U could have hit it with a thermometer running at the manifold and find which cylinder temp was way off immediate indication of a injector issue Also water meth over nos,Way better for a Diesel engine

I would say pull the pistons, check the bearings for wear and color. No reason to put a motor back in without checking things first. I would say send the pistons out and have them teflon and ceramic coated. The ceramic coating will reduce the amount of heat being transferred into the piston, it will help with engine longevity and reduce oil temperatures in the engine. I have seen two engines with damage due to the pistons(#2 cylinder) heating up and expanding to the point of making cylinder wall contact.

I buitengines for many years and to me if you are going to go through the trouble of tearing itdown, it would be worth a few etra dollars to freshen it up. If the piston clearance is good, a quick hone job and new rings would help ensure the motor will be in good shape especially since you are adding nitrous. Since the head is off, seems frshening it up would be wise as well. Had some exxperience with nitrous and itcan behard on an engine especilly if something goes wrong.

The valve seats are eroded and the rings are carboned and not floating freely in the grooves. Camshaft has very little to do with cranking compression. You didn't mention doing a wet compression test which would tell you if its rings or valves. 2nd reason I say rings is that dark ring is oil from the rings.
