Let's talk about junk yard axle swaps! Over the last couple of years the cost of junk yard axles have skyrocketed in price. At the same time brand new axles have dropped in price substantially. Today I want you to let your guard down like I did and look at the costs of these options with an open mind. I was actually very surprised at what I found after crunching the numbers.
Fusion 4x4 didn't ask me to do this. In fact they had no idea I was working on this video until last week when I called to ask a couple questions.
These opinions are honest and the number crunching is accurate at the time I made the video. Enjoy!

I was about to raise that same point - perhaps a good compromise would be to buy the junk-yard axle, remove the brakes, etc, that aren't supplied with the custom axle, then flick on the rest - might come out pretty close to even if the market's as strong as suggested. Overall, when buying new one avoids buying someone else's problem - and if one's dropping that sort of money on the axle, it's not unlikely they'll be happy(ish) to add a bit more for new brakes and stub axles so they KNOW they're all good.

great video Nate , it has come down to supply in demand so everything goes up and people pay it they want to build stronger and its far from reality, I machine and heat treat steel of all kinds for a living and have gained tons of knowledge over almost 20 yrs experience, you got to think before you drop 4k on a used axle swap, sure you know what it came out of is easy, its the mileage , heat cycles the unit has gone through and most of all was it driven hard and serviced regularly or never serviced, if it has almost never been serviced, the whole unit is well under 50% of its usable service life, and is then put into a rig with big off road tires and like most guys don't bother to upgrade the gear ratios now you just upped the factor of your 4k axle breakage possibly your first trip out wheeling, so i agree with you the new custom axle price even if it is a $1000 more is the way i would go hands down, no messing around with used things when off roading people being penny wise and pound foolish, i have built heavy duty equipment of all sorts over the years and know what can go wrong and at times ,very wrong, buddy built a rig 7 yrs ago put in a 5.3 V8 low miles like 27k and old 1 ton axles out of a ford F350 it looked great when it was done and had a set of 37" KO2's on it before the end of the 2nd month boom broke something in the back fixed it, then 2 weeks later the front gave up the ghost and was almost 3k and he did all the work diff, axles ,knuckles, driveshaft so almost new really when you think about an some guy offered to sell him a new front axle for $3900 we couldn't talk him out of it doing it his way, thats ok though, new is not for everyone i would stay new thats just me 👍

Very true. Most folks don't think about what life that junk yard axle has seen before you got it. Was the passenger side tire hit by another vehicle in an accident? A 1° tweek in the inner c could be easily overlooked and make it chew through tires faster then normal. It could even cause some minor death wobble issues. I've actually had 2 close friends buy and build axles to find out they were bent 🤦‍♂️. But you are right new axles aren't for everyone

Cool video with great comparisons. Downfall of the custom axle is you need custom axle shafts, if I break a SD axle I can run to an auto parts store and grab another and the stock SD axles can hold big power so moly isn't needed unless your really going to beat the crap out of it regularly and they can still hold up to that. The custom axles are cool, but still over priced imo, especially with the cheaper salvage and FB marketplace prices we have in the south.

Then I found a 14 bolt dually rear from an 88GM cab&chassie truck at the boneyard for a 150 bucks and bought a disk brake conversion kit and converted to single wheel and I've been running about set up for 5 years and my Jeep with no problems....

I find interesting that Fusion, Rockjock, Dynatrac all have some physical uniqueness about them. Prices seem to be similar so I would go for customer service. But, I'm afraid it is a little late for me for I have purchased a junkyard 14 bolt and kingpin 60 for my LJ build. Custom built axles have been the quick "easy button" for a long time now. Cost and time management wise plus a warranty, but some people like "rolling their own" axle. Now days you can get on net price out from a few company's find best option "al cart" for you and know upfront the cost and it will fit. Twenty plus years before there was only a very few choices for built axles custom custom 9 in or Dana patterns 44 and 60 and it could take quite a bit of time to just figured out what and where to order many was set as this is what we offer take it or not. Heck you can about log in and watch it being built for you, just pull out your C.C. which is different then too and shows the changes. Off-roading was more of a hobby/ weekend thing or for work now it's alot more people income stream now.

I’ve always been a junkyard axle fan, but it will add up quickly. Another big thing is the labor costs installed of the gears and ARB. I know some can do that, but I leave gears to the pros for peace of mind! I’m not rich, but I can but buy parts little by little at a time and dropping the full $5k at a time.

Definitely similar pricing when built to the hilt. If I were to spend 5K I would definitely go aftermarket. But in my area, a 05+ D60 is about $400 at multiple yards. No need for an ARB for me, just a Spartan. As far as a truss and mounting it I have a few tools and know how to use them. Personally around $1500 for a swap on my XJ.

(about $1K or so). daily driver? it gets driven to the trails and "other things" but NOT a mall cruiser. as for a cj-7 these axles would be cut down quite a bit. less than 62 in wms-wms. a rear 8.8 is easy to do such, maybe at my place. (lack of proper working space). or a built up corp 20 out of a waggy? (reuse the guts i have now). a built up 9in for weight (front and/or rear). just a fi amc 258, T18, dana 300.

you also need to factor in your time to prep and build the junk yard axle, I don't know about you guys, but I'm at a stage in life where my time has value (family, home, business owner ...) and if I can get a superior product for basically what the parts cost me (even if it's a few hundred more), that's money well spent and free's me up to do the work that I must do on the rig by myself.

I just bought a front Dana 60 for my Jeep ZJ for $600. I don't have enough to buy a kit (I'm in college, and I won't have that kind of money for several years because of grad school). What you said about the pinion offset worried me a bit. Should I sell that Dana 60 and just save for a full custom axle? Is the pinion offset an issue on Jeeps as well (zj has same front end as a tj), or is the land cruiser a specific case. My current plan is to build the 60 and a 14 bolt rear slowly as I have the money, with just truss and gears to start out.

Go with Fusion. Call them both and you'll see why. Also, 8 weeks vs 20+.

If I plan on doing overlanding. And mild off roading. Would getting 1 tons be worth it. Or would beefing up my 1/2 ton axles be a better idea. Or buying 3/4 ton axles

Great video. What's the plans for the FSJ? I used a Ford 'sno fighter' Dana 60. The perches are in the right place (SOA vs SUA) so I got 6" of lift. Basically bolt in. They are getting more expensive now (I picked up mind about a decade ago). It had the right gears but I tossed in an air locker and some Yukon hubs. The brakes are probably the weak point, just not a great design but they work.

In terms of it saving you a ton of headache (haha) I’d say it might be a good idea, but I just picked up a 03 Dana 60 and sterling 10.5 for 600 bucks and I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to break it down. Plan on doing 5.38’s and chromoly joints/inners. The way I see it.. I’m learning all of this first hand and am excited to start it. Plus, casually buying all of the parts and stuff doesn’t hurt my feelings as much as spending it all at once 😂

Guess what, you get what you pay for. The cost of all used parts have been creeping up for years. I understand the cost for operating a bone yard has also gone through the roof. It suck all the way around. With our local off road group. You see the same few people who are always building and rebuilding their rides. At my shop we say all the time. People can't afford to build it right. But they always can afford to build it twice. Bone yards are for sourcing a core that you rebuild. Not a used part that is waiting to fail. When you take a vehicle and beat it harder then it was ever design to be , things will fail. This is why you need to make choices. How crazy of a trail can I afford if you can't afford all these super strong parts it is cool. Just ride within your vehicles abilities so you reduce the chance of a breakdown. You can have tons of fun with almost any stock truck if you stay within its limits. Plus most of the time you can drive to and from with a radio and AC on and working.

The biggest difference is the ability to spread out the parts in a junkyard axle. Buy a set for $1,300 and save for a locker, save for a set of gears, save for chromoly axle shafts, etc. with the axle installed.

but most people building rigs for offroading locally to them not touring the country with the ULTIMATE rig arent buying arb lockers, chromoly shafts, new gears, new diff covers, ect... dana 60 out of a dodge 2500/3500 is 400-600$ canadian up here fire that under your TJ/XJ or whatever as is and youre over built as hell... no need to replace every single component, maybe if youre running 40s and only have a 2.4:1 Tcase youd need to regear apples to apples yes its always cheaper to buy a complete assembly rather than replacing every single part one at a time.. most people are working with 5k-10k budget total not 10k budget just for axles!

For me... and lots of other poor people like me.... it is a tough pill to swallow to buy that in one shot. We can buy an axle one week.... a locker another pay day... etc. One can't argue with the math though.
