A new trend in the fishing industry is for soft plastics to be full of tentacles. Is this just a trend or are these baits here to stay?

Been making them for years. Have one for bream and it out fish’s any worm or cricket. Made some for bass and if there is one under that dock, it’s gonna catch him. But it don’t catch bigs largemouth but will smallmouth. It works great up north, way better than down south. So these aren’t new. Just new to everyday bass fisherman. I’ve often watched you fish your river with the color water and said I bet my big would work great there. Cut a fat black old monster worm about one to two inches long. Get a needle threader and push through the worm a use old living rubber spinner bait skirt. It works better. Do about two or three strands of white for sunny days and chartreuse for cloudy days. Use a light jig head or just wacky it. And don’t tell nobody else. You’re welcome Matt 😉

@@brady8257 1/32 beetle spin. Throw the spin away. Pull the hook out and put some braid around the hook and put the body back on with the hook coming out the end of the body. Take a strand of white living rubber tie a half hitch and put it over the hook n tie tightly. Do not reel straight in. Bounce it and drag. The skirt will flare on the bounce. On a 6 ft ultra light rod and 4lb test it is fun. Catches bream, crappie and bass.

I think you’re right in your comparison of bass to cats and their curiosity. I think a lot of bass fishermen myself included over think bass fishing but at the same time under think it. What I mean is what is the limit? What will a bass not eat? In my opinion I think the answer has not been discovered yet. I think bass will eat basically anything when presented properly.

No question that you can get bass to react strike like a cat as oftentimes they do have full stomachs. What they think it is, or what we're mimicking can he up for debate. It could be just instinctive to them to eat water spiders (as we do have in Northern WI). Aling that note, when I was a young lad in the Marine Corps and lived in base housing my wife had a hooded rat as a pet. I once had him up on the kitchen table and placed a crayfish on the table. He immediately ran over, flipped the crayfish on it's back and killed it from the soft underside. The rat just knew it was prey and how to kill and eat it instantly. I mean ZERO hesitation or thought was in that rat's head. From 40+ years of bass fishing with many early decades of catching and fileting and eating them I'd venture to guess aylt least 80% had completely full bellies. Minnows, bluegills, frogs, crayfish and even birds and juvenile turtles I've found inside them. Bellies packed full but they still struck.

Before I buy one, I thought I’d just put some old spinner bait skirt strands in a bait that I already use to see if it makes any difference. Maybe a centipede which I still use. But I haven’t bothered to try it yet.

I've always been the one that doesn't believe that a fish thinks, boy I want to have crayfish today instead of minnows. Or man I feel like blue gill this morning. Thanks for the most part they just eat whatever's around, if they're hungry. And of course the reaction bite. And like you said just flat curiosity. I think if it's presented properly you could probably get them to bite on just about anything. The reasoning behind it is an interesting subject but as long as they're biting what I'm throwing I could care less what it looks like. Don't take this message the wrong way because I am not saying any of this in a negative manner

Great info Matt! One of the 1st bait to get in the US Market was Dice Rubber from OSP. It is only a few grams in weight shaped like a sugar cube with tentacles (salted or no salt) primarily used as a drop shot bait. This odd bait gets bit! The Raid 2 Way comes in multiple sizes and it has great action as you mentioned. A number of people tear the bait in half and use it as a drop shot bait. The most exciting bait company in this category is Geecrack. They have material in their baits that they refer to as SAF (Salt, Amino Acid, Flavor ie shrimp) it’s in all of their baits and smells somewhat like Peanut Butter. I have had great success on the IMO Kemushi 60mm size in the sinking version (I rig it with a Ryugi Hover Shot hook in Size 1 or 2). Fish it on light fluorocarbon and let is sink slowly. You will just feel your line go tight, they don’t let go just lean into the fish. You can also trick this bait out with a piece of Tungsten nail weight or with glass rattles. I just started using the Cue Bomb. I have caught a few fish, but I’m figuring out the best way to rig the bait! The action as you mentioned Matt is amazing! These baits are the real deal, Gimmicky or not 💯. These baits will not work unless you exercise patience and fish them slowly 😉

I don't know if these style of baits are here to stay or not but I do know that I'm a tackle junky with no hope of recovery so I'll try them, lol. I also know that baits like the OSP Dice have been around for awhile now but I think that the win by Taku Ito on the Elite series last week on Smith Lake is bringing these type baits more to the forefront now (he said the OSP Dice was a key bait for him). I think trying new baits, techniques and ways to catch bass is one of the things that makes our sport so much fun, so I'm game to give them a shot. I tried your and Schultz"s Hover and Ozark rigs and I really like them.

I rarely comment on videos but to this one I feel the desire. I've fished these long before any company I knew of made any. I grew up loving to fish but without allot of money. To make up for it I would make whatever I could. Typical stuff jigs buzz baits, spin er aits, sinkers. It was left over soft plastics and trying to make theoat of them that I started cutting them into big looking creatures and putting skirt materials in them. I say this to say please mimic my approach to these baits. They're expensive and super easy to make out of scraps.

The one bait that caught my eye months ago was the OSP Dice. Not sure what they represent 🤔 A local shop in north Phoenix area has done many riggings and video on these type of baits . The Small Mouths and Spots are attracted to them. But just not much of a soft plastic guy though. Thanks for taking time out of your Sunday to make this video.

You hit the nail on the head. Showing the fish something they likely haven't seen a lot of. Is it cost effective though if you're not making your own? Are they producing any better than a more natural soft plastic to warrant the price difference? I've thrown the OSP dice here and there, and every little dink in the area will swallow it.

I've been making my own since Dan gapin was featured on in fisherman. I used small diameter ice fishing line and just threaded back and forth with a needle and then cut off the loops. Some people use spinner Bates skirts and thread the plastic strands through. I don't know or care why the fish eat it I just know they will eat.
