I suspect GW are really leaning into themed armies. Lictors might be moved up to a character to act as a HQ, so you can have a stealthy army filled up with lictors, leapers and genestealers, you can have a psychic army with the new brain bug, neurothropes, zoanthropes and maleceptor, or even an all flyer army now with the addition of shrikes and shrike primes.

I really like the look of these models! As soon as they were described as ambush units,it made me imagine an Alien's style scene where a group of Leaper's pick off a squad of Tempestus Scion's one by one. If I wasn't already sold on making a Tyranid Army,I am now! Though I am wondering the lore reason behind the name. Will it be another Land Raider and Land Speeder naming situation? I hope not!

Mmm, Velociraptors straight from JP1! Clever Girl! A very busy niche with Genestealers, Raveners, Lictors, The Deathleaper, Hormagaunts (Mawloc?) all filling the rolls of melee infantry to counter light-medium infantry. Genestealers, Raveners, Lictors, Deathleaper and Mawloc all having some kind of infiltrate or deepstriking ability. Although we did see in the trailer that these Leapers took out a Gravis armoured Apothecary, so maybe they are better able to take on heavier infantry, but not in numbers. I would like to see these Leapers have some kind of a focus on assassinating lone character models, havng the ability to take out single hard targets but being pretty mediocre against multiple opponents (like Necron Overlord dualling bonuses?)

I think the purpose of these guys is more broad than the lictor but not the genestealer. The lictor is generally an infiltration/assassination organism and the genestealer is an advanced infiltration/preparation/shock troop organism. The leaper seems to be created for more broader combat like we see in the trailer. Large clusters of light ambushing targets are harder to deal with then 1 or 2 lictors while also being more disposable and "cheaper" than either the lictor or the genestealer

2:14 the image on the right is from the 3rd edition Tyranid Codex, back when you could "build" an army list more suited to your playstyle with stripped down unit stats which you could then upgrade to create new Tyranid species. I do hope they have a more Tyranid name rather then Von Ryan's Leapers.

if we look in the old books that explain how the nids evolve, we see that the Von Ryans leaper is an evolution of the hormagaunt, not the Lictor.

The reality is we don't know how direct the Hive Mind's control of the genetics of the Tyranids is. It may well be tailor making creature templates by taking pieces of DNA from one critter and combining them with DNA from 5 others to make an entirely separate and independent critter with a wild array of features. The Tyranids are probably not going through classical Darwinian evolution, but rather a directed genetic manipulation. So our conceptual models of classification and speciation probably don't apply well, if at all.

I absolutely adore the design! The claws in particular look amazing! The name needs work though. Functionally speaking, it sounds like these are the "mega gaunts" some people have been wanting for a while now. Tougher, meaner hormagaunts that move just as fast, but have fewer numbers to compensate. Can't wait to add some to my hive fleet!

The upper claws are almost exact duplicates of the original metal lictor sculpt, it's a real throwback to 2nd edition days. The finecast one is based on the second metal lictor.

looks like it's got the same body, tail, secondary claws and a similar head crest to the shrike creature. So maybe instead of a lictor dual kit like some people are thinking/hoping it's leapers/shrikes and you just swap out the main limbs for wings? They've even mostly got semi-airborne leaping/landing poses like most jump infantry do.

Overall I like the design. However I think the mandibles and tentacles together look a bit fussy, and would probably prefer they either leaned into "lictors but smol" and go with just tentacles, or define the distinction between the two by only giving them the mandibles. I'm sure the lore will explain where they fit in.

My guess is that these will effectively be “Genestealers” but with scything talons while the Genestealers with rending claws will be the only type of Genestealer. Sells more minis & is visually distinct from across the table.

These are going to be fun to see how they are included. It's interesting you stayed they are a "go-between" with lichtors and hormogaunts. Lichtors are all but useless as they are now, so these might be outdated with them to offer some much-needed support. They MIGHT be a niche unit, but if they do have forward deployment, they could pair well with genestealers too. This is getting exciting! *Psychers across the imperium now getting an ominous, repeating message: WE ARE COMING"* 😄

Noticed these in the trailer but i was thinking these were yaml genestealers as there were quite a few of them, and for the exposed back head, they are indeed smaller than lictors which are also in the tralier. The problem i have with what might be in the boxset is there is only one synapse model...

Looking quite good here! If anything, I suspect a lot of people could just use those as Lictor proxy without much issue (unless a new Lictor comes with a radical redesign or size creep). Same way as we could gather up 3 Lictors (current and past models) and use them as Leapers without much trouble. Most people wouldn't be able to tell them apart!

I adore all the great ranged/hybrid bugs we've had over the years, and will always have a piece of artillery in the back lines.. But melee and swarms SHOULD be the backbone of many nid armies. I'll take all the melee and stealthy bugs we can get, Lictors and gaunts are amazing, and I remember that page mentioning the Leaper in the 3rd ed codex, when I started! I'll absolutely have a unit or two of these. Potentially a pack of 5 to support Shrikes in cleaving or Parasite/lictor on an enemy obj. I kept my warriors all hybrid, and now I'm really glad I did. These and melee shrikes will do amazing with a winged melee tyrant. Meta or not, they'll be a joy to cause chaos! Norn queen when though?

A ymgarl genestealer we always wanted. Im suspecting this leaper as a troops choice, if so itd really seperate genetstealer cult from tyranid genestealers. A genestealer with more tyranid warrior stats, possibly chameleonic. Similar to tau stealthsuits without the guns perhaps. Offers a chance to model one as a broodlord, makes sense based on games workshop patterns; Neurothrope / zoanthropes box set being a example.

Seems to me as they stated that the Lictors are still be around they'll be redone but perhaps this time be characters that buff this kind of squad in some fashion, perhaps a lieutenant. Model wise I guess when they do the Lictor you will either build it as anonymous or the Leaping Death pretty much like that Ork boss on Squigosaur. On the topic of these I really like the models, and that we might get a squad champion, unlike any other Tyranid unit right now feels kinda strange. Size-wise I really think they're gonna be current Lictor-sized and the new and improved Lictor will be taller.

I do like the models but I agree that I'm not sure what their point is. Genestealers do kinda fill the role already. Best I can figure is Deep Strike vs Infiltrate. I was also thinking that all Lictors might become character killers now with the Precision rule and Deathleaper truly becomes the Tyranid Skulltaker.

Seems like they are trying to flesh out various ways of playing 'Nids with an HQ, Elites and Troops archetype. To me it looks like they are trying to make Termagants and Warriors the basis for shooty lists, Shrikes and Gargoyles for mobile lists and Hormagaunts and Leapers for a choppy list. That way each unit type would have chaff and synapse paired up without having to have characters babysitting them or daisychaining your units all over the table to keep your buffs.

I was curious about the name too, and did some digging. It turns out that the name "Von Ryan's Leaper" actually comes from a similar Tyranid creature featured in the obscure-ish Warhammer 40,000 Collectible Card Game. Interestingly, the "Viragon" mentioned in one of the rumours also originates from said card game.

Kinda looks like they threw a Lictor, the old Death Leaper, and a Hormagaunt into a pot and stirred it around for a bit. Which, depending on how directly involved the Hive Mind is with the genetics of the Swarm, might be exactly what happened. The Hive Mind saw how effective the Death Leaper was relative to other Lictors, and wanted to make improvements on that design. I'd also like to say that the Lictor has always been described as an anti-character unit, almost intended to be an assassin. But I've never felt they were good enough for that. They didn't hit hard enough to hir seriously threaten any unique characters that aren't a Tau Ethereal. Mostly they just tie up a delicate shooty unit in the back so it can't be shooting at other targets. So perhaps the Von Ryan Leaper is going to coincide with a change to the Lictor, as well. The Leapers will be the stealth deploy lightning assault capability, that can quickly get to and tie up shooty elements of the opponent's force, while the Lictor will get rules reworks that make it much better at hunting and eliminating characters.
