The tire requirements are odd. They want the tire to wear at a specific rate and have their usefulness be completely diminished at specific point... Think you missed the point. The tires have become almost more of the suspension than the suspension is. Ergo, a change is needed to allow the teams to have more autonomy over how their cars handle suspension-wise, leading to more variables for teams and drivers to address in order to be competitive.
@Mr6Sinner

Robert S How have they been “left behind” in technology? Changing the size of the tire doesn’t change the technology used to make or use said tires. The only thing that changes is the method with which you use them.

Motorsport series worldwide are regulated. The regulations prevent the cars for going too fast, or they prevent an explosion of costs. Normally you want your rims as small as possible, because they are adding weight to your car (rotating masses). The rims of some race cars are just big enough to fit the brake system. Brakes are key to race cars, especially in touring cars. They have most likely big discs. As a racing driver I prefer thicker wheels, because you can feel more the track and what the car does.

I don't like the tyre blanket ban, solely because it's such an F1 thing, which sounds kinda ridiculous I know. But if you've watched Indycar, almost at every pitstop window someone will say "We don't use tyre warmers here" which I'm pretty sure it's directed at F1, and I like that.

But I'm sure it will cause more excitement. In DTM they banned blankets a few years ago and you can really see how hard it is for the drivers to deal with cold tyres and defend their position for a few corners after pit stops. Therefore the timing of stops is crucial, also for front runners who would have to deal with midfield cars when pitting early.

Can someone please explain the fascination of F1 trying to "relate" to road cars? Its a fucking single seat open wheel race car! I don't look to F1 for comparisons to my Toyota Camry. This is why we have WEC..
@manat31790
@manat31790 5 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons F1 want to relate to the road car is to attract manufacturers and automobile investors. One of the clearest examples here is Pirelli, who wants to get brand name association and more sales on the tires because people believe what they are buying for a road car are direct replicas of what they see on the F1 cars. Other than that, F1 is a gateway to an extensive R&D for on-road automobiles. F1 has a privilege of testing and developing new technologies a lot earlier than other types of sports. Traction control, active suspension, semi-automatic gearbox, kinetic energy recovery system, all of these techs are showcased as the pinnacle parts of F1 despite not being the inventors of the equipment. It also helps that staff from F1 teams are some of the most skilled and knowledgeable people in the world when it comes to car development, meaning you're working directly with highly experienced people. It does NOT matter if the open wheel car does not look like Toyota Camry (and neither does a WEC prototype). What the companies want are the data and engineers who can identify how techs work and how they can push the limit of the technologies. F1 is a super competitive sport that encourages fast and reliable development of car parts. The extreme and unpredictable conditions of racing allow for intensive and critical assessments of what each piece of the new tech can/can't do and how far it can be develop not only for F1, but sport/road cars as well. For a reference, look at the original 1990 Honda NSX. The car was developed by Honda's executive with the company's knowledge from its partnership with McLaren in the 80s-90s. Aryton Senna himself helped with the development due to his contract with the company. The low profile F1 wheels help car industries in that wheel and tires development will be made faster for road cars because the data will be more comparable. This allows the techs to be developed quickly to its fullest potential before they are being adapted onto a road car. It will also help other R&D such as brakes, suspensions, and other new techs that may be discovered in the future.
@FastPaull
@FastPaull 5 жыл бұрын
That's my point though, WEC literally does all of those things and more. Not only do you have prototypes which are pushing the boundaries on technology just as far, if not more than F1 cars now. You have production based road cars cars racing in the series as well. I mean if we're going to talk about "relating to road cars" Ford literally built the new GT the way they did just so they had a competitive car for WEC. Now with WEC's "Hypercar" rule for 2021 it's only going to make it more exciting and even more relatable to road cars. I find it funny how F1 is touted as the "Pinnacle" for technological advancement. Yet they ban 90% of the advancements they've came up with! Traction control, active suspension, abs, etc etc etc. I get the fact they wan't to make it more attractive and "Affordable for other manufacturers". But i struggle to believe that a naturally aspirated V8 was more expensive to develop and maintain than a turbo V6 with 47 electric motors and a glorified thermo powerstation on-board. It's always 1 step forward and 2 steps back with F1. Only up until this year are they running lap times comparable to the v10 era. Gp2 lap times were getting alarmingly close to F1 lap times for awhile, and that's just frankly pathetic in my opinion. Fernando Alonso literally said he was BORED in the car just a couple years ago. Maybe that's why he went to WEC haha.
@manat31790
@manat31790 5 жыл бұрын
The WEC idea is a good point, as not every car company are interested in F1. Porsche and Lamborghini, for examples, are never really interested in F1. However, the banning things are arguable. F1 is not 100% machine. When you have new technologies, someone is going to complain that they want "man over machine". For example, James Hunt said banning active suspension was a good thing because the driver would have more inputs in the cars. What is good for one person is bad for another, and FIA is the one who have tolerate complaints and balance things out. Fernando Alonso's getting bored of F1 has nothing to do to FIA's approach to sport. In 2017, he wrote an article called "Fernando Alonso: Why I am racing in the Indy 500" for SkySport news. One of the main reasons he ditched F1 for Indy 500 was because he wanted to win races and he cited his entire resume to support his claims. McLaren Honda horribly failed that expectation and Fernando's found no other choice but to constantly sneak out to race in other series. Everything he did was for his own successes, and WEC showed he was more than capable of racing despite the McLaren's fails. That's the problem, though. I don't understand why Fernando keeps sticking with McLaren. If it was Senna, he would have jumped ship years ago. Instead, the guy keeps wasting his time with that team. Remember, everything he did, he did to get a competitive car to win. Since that fails but he is still contract bounded to McLaren, all he can do is complaining at the sport itself. It's all about rhetoric and playing a victim card, which is unfair to F1 as a sport.

it was banned for safety reasons. Namely due to all of the very real fires that were occurring. There will always be a small amount of fuel between the shutoff device and the very tip of the nozzle, and the exhaust piping will always be hot enough to ignite the fuel on contact. I very much doubt it will return any time soon. At least while the fires are still in living memory. Here is a pretty good example of what has/can go wrong. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hafKm5uchrGHhM0

Eh, i think they would get larger brakes if they were allowed. Theres no lower limit, only an upper limit. I believe all teams are using the largest size of brakes they are allowed to use. Theres also a limit on the amount of cooling for the brakes. Because larger brakes will be more heat resistant(they sink more heat and have a larger surface area) and can give you a higher maximum force.

Given everyone knows 2021 is a season of significant chances, it makes sense that they'll be doing a major redesign on the chassis already. Beefing up the suspension and adjusting how the arm travel to compensate for lessened tyre wall deflection absorbing shocks is not such a huge redesign either. Removing tyre warmers will mainly have an effect on the start of the race, as the formation lap becomes much more vital for tyre warming, at pit stops, they might simply have all their tyres in heated cupboards to reduce that lack of warmers a bit. Removing warmers will also lessen the undercut effect slightly and will put more emphasis on the driver managing his car.
@christianbarnay2499
@christianbarnay2499 5 жыл бұрын
The banning of blankets is not opposed to safety. This is just a consequence of the new tyre compounds being much safer at low temperatures than current tyres. This will allow for even lower speed limit under safety car. Which means the pace car won't be running at its limit and working conditions will be safer for people on foot evacuating broken cars, repairing protections and cleaning the track of spilled fluids and broken parts. And drivers won't have to swerve like mad men to keep their tyres hot for the restart. Also slick tyres will still have grip in mildly wet or foggy conditions.

As a Mercedes Technician, I see bubbles and blowouts every day on low profile tires. I wonder if this sort of thing may be more common in F1 in the future. Of course, these sort of injuries are caused by potholes, which a racetrack (hopefully) doesn't have. Very interested to see how this plays out. Great video as always.

What you'll probably find is with the lower profile tyres there will be less give in the tyre wall so agressove use of kerbs will have a higher tyre failure rate, see it a lot in other forms of motorsport such as Aussie v8's and btcc, also the load on the inside edge of the tyre will increase per square cm so punctures due to high camber angles could be more common

Nice video, although you forgot one important thing. When the height of the tyrewall is smaller, it gets tougher/stronger, thus increasing the amount of G-forces that the tyres can withstand. This increases the grip (=speed) through corners because the tyres won't stretch as much as before and therefore, drivers can be more aggressive. If we suggest that the suspension is tuned perfectly, the cars will also be a bit more controllable since the drivers will have more feedback as before.

F1 Driver and FIA think that building a tire which is made of rubber is the same as building a car out of carbon fiber, steel, aluminium and so on (you guys get the point). Rubber isn't predictable as stiff materials are. Rubber doesn't fail with the same consistency as (picking one of previous examples) carbon fiber does. Rubber needs to grip the car, have a temperature window much smaller than all the components in the car, needs to withstand massive amounts of force and they wear out so fast compared to any other component on an F1 car that it can't really be compared to anything else. So by asking Pirelli to not only build a tyre made of something which is not as consistent as a metal that can handle and provide the necessary performance to an F1 car but to also include a defined time window of lower performance in accordance to tyre degradation (by the second AND by the lap) is simply ludicrous and pretty much impossible. More likely than not, someone's gonna have to give in on one of those demands. If Pirelli does pull that off without someone complaining about an aspect of the tyres (FIA, Teams or Drivers), I swear to god I'll not buy any tyre from another brand except Pirelli for the next 60 years of my life.

This video popped up again, so I watched it again. First of all, one or even two stops (unless you're on the hardest tyres) would become really difficult, and might lose you enough time that even a three stop is the minimum practical solution to any race. Just that alone, combined with the fact that you know some might even try four stops with such early tyre degradation, would make for a lot of strategic play. Let's just hope the FIA does away with the two compounds requirement and lets teams decide for themselves. If we see both a successful four stint soft run and a successful two stint hard run in 2021, I am very happy, because that means strategy wars, and as with most wars it leads to new ideas.

In theory, the lower profile tyres will help drivers in situations where in the past cars have occasionally over-steered suddenly or slid under acceleration, the driver has attempted to correct but because of the energy stored up in the sidewall of the tyre (i dont know if that's actually it but that's certainly how some f1 commentators have explained it), this causes the car to suddenly snap the other direction, putting the car into a spin and even into the wall on occasion.

Hey Chain bear, why are they narrowing tires when the goal is to improve racing? Wider tires = more mechanical grip right? So in slower corners the cars can follow easier, now they are going to be Skinnier and more skittish so I don't understand the change... (Nothing against lower sidewalls, that I understand)
@jort93z
@jort93z 5 жыл бұрын
The goal is to improve the race for the spectators, not actually making them clear the laps as quickly as possible. You can see that clearly in the regulations. Less grip will cause more mistakes, making the race better.
@Thumbsupurbum
@Thumbsupurbum 5 жыл бұрын
Wider tires are also harder to warm up and keep them in their optimal temp range. Which is going to be important without tire blankets. By narrowing the tires down a bit, heating them up will be a bit easier, and the tires shouldn't lose the heat as quickly on the straights either. In theory anyway. Also keep in mind the front wings will be wider in 2021 as well, per the 2019 regulations. Wider tires and wider front wings = more broken wings and tire punctures.

More to the point, perhaps, is potentially greater inertia of the wheel assemblies. 90+% of people don't give a heck for any race programme the tyre manufacturer is involved with, very few could even tell you who the supplier is. Tyre technology, or rather understanding how the tyres work on the vehicle, is a black art and these changes are a double edged sword - while some modelling may be transferrable from other disciplines, much of the current understanding and modelling will have to be thrown out. The suggestion that they will potentially have an even narrower optimum operating range will, no doubt, be greeted with horror by the engineers who already are having problems getting, and keeping, the tyres in the current range. Agree that the compound criteria is daft - it does bring into question whether heat cycling will partially cure them to improve, or tweak their race performance - possibly teams using more of their race allocation prior to the race in Qualli' or practice? What is also going to undergo some massive changes is the braking, as they will no longer be as restricted by the wheel inside diameter.

@gordowg1wg145
@gordowg1wg145 5 жыл бұрын
True, the construction is very lightweight, esp' when compared to 'road' cars - but, remember, while there will be a reduction in sidewall height, there will also be more mass added in the bead/breaker area as it will be significantly longer. Then, of course, there is the additional mass of the wheel - square law, remember - and the bigger brakes that will then be used will also compromise total mass, both unsprung and rotational inertia.

Your comment on bigger tires being bad for acceleration got me thinking: What if the tire somehow started off small for improved acceleration, but slowly expanded as the car got faster, aiding in top speed instead? Obviously, some sort of active suspension or other tire-retract-y thing would be needed to compensate for the added ride height, but that should be easy enough to pull off.
