What a vivid, life altering time this must be for him! So many changes and he'll never be the same again (for the better). It's wild to read from an outsider's perspective how much *can* go right if a person just decides to make a different choice and break the pattern. He could have stayed in those old relationships and old mentality, and his future would have been relatively ok at best and absolutely destroyed at worst.
