Why does carwow need to do a tug of war with a low end model Diesel Defender against a Tesla Swapped classic Defender(that too with better off-road tyres). It's obvious about who's gonna win. (Edit : The green Defender with lots of unknown parts of different era loses though, and Matt trys his best not to appreciate the new diesel Defender by giving excuses. What we have here is a battle of tyres and the vertical load providing adhesion. When people throw torque figures of EVs around they need to consider the gear ratios involved. For example a Tesla model S plaid has around 1000Nm torque at the motor. There is a single reduction gearbox with a ratio of around 9:1 which will give approx 9,000Nm at the wheel. I have figures for a 2015 Toyota Hilux here. 360Nm at the crank but when you multiply through the First gear ratio (4.313:1), the low range transfer box ratio (2.556:1) and lastly the final drive ratio 3.727:1) the max wheel torque in first gear low range = 360 * 4.313 * 2.556 * 3.727 = 14,791Nm (at the wheels). That's the part that moves the vehicle. Yes absolutely the electric motors have a much better torque curve characteristic than an IC engine but that's more of use in a road race not an off road tug of war.

@@mociczyczki yes correct. That will give you the force which multiplied by any coefficient of friction of tyres on surface to give you the accelerative force or tractive effort. However the point was just to illustrate that blindly quoting torque figures as "pulling power" is misleading.

@@typhoon-7 yea it is for egzample 100 nm at 5000 rpm will pull or push harder /with biger force than for egzample 1000Nm at 50 rpm when we compare both at egzacly the same velocity first setupw will psuh driver into seat 10 times stronger ... also in vehicle with multiple gear and clutch at start you can spin engine at higher rpm and fast let go ckutch what be fracture of second give more kick than only from final ratio calculation ...also your calculation for torq for hilux isint 100% correct not when we talking about start from stand still where you cn ncrease rpm and the let go cluctch what multiple final ration to point where clutch finally fully bite" .
