After living with just two 15 square foot vegetable beds for years, my husband said it was okay to make a 200 sq foot “flower” bed on the front lawn. It’s shaped like an irregular oval island to give it more curb appeal and I’ve planted fruit trees and vegetables between the flowers to keep up the curb appeal. Funny enough, most people can’t tell the difference between flowers and vegetable plants anyway.

Our front yard is what's south facing so I've just been slowly taking it over, each year claiming more and more grass. This year my husband has finally become a willing and enthusiastic participant as he can now see that it's way more beneficial than just a pretty grass space.

After a 50+ year old concrete patio was removed in late 2019, homemade compost was added after breaking up the incredibly hard ground with a pickaxe, then planted fava beans as a compost crop. In 2021 added raised beds, more compost and now the area is growing an assortment of wonderful vegetables and flowers!

Last year I got 3 small pop up raised beds and filled with bagged compost. Spent a fortune. This year I've made some simple no-dig, not-raised beds between my decking using just free cardboard, a 1000L bulk bag of manure and some woodchip between the beds. Cost the same and quadruple the growing area. Think its easy to make that mistake first time round but learned my lesson!

I will be starting some raised beds for a kitchen garden. I had laid the plot last year but have decided to change it a bit. I will be fencing it in as my dog loves to dig and move plants around. She thinks she has a green paw but she is not very helpful. Cute but not helpful at all. I am also planning on putting in a wildflower meadow in the back portion of the yard as well as a dwarf conifer garden in front of the house. Lots of plans in the works but only if the weather will be a bit more cooperative. I am in St. Louis, Missouri, Zone 6b.

We uprooted the current residents to make way for planting some vegetables and herbs. Thanks for the helpful advice, hopefully we will see a good first harvest this year! If not, there's always next time. Will take in to account of also planting some flowers to attract bees and the rest to help the veggies.

Found your channel today.... And learning so new births that I didn't now.this garden thing is new to me. I'm gonna say now I'm autistic and struggle with understanding and being understood so I apologize now if anything is taken the wrong way,I really don't mean it. I moved to a bungalow last year, have been here 12 months and a week, but have had covid for that week lol Last year we spent alot of time trying to take care of the garden as it was from the previous chap that passed away the winter before, obviously in the 6months noone was here there was noone looking after it so all the bushes, and there's lots down the one side that goes to the road, they had gone made.i still have no idea what they are.but we are leaving them in. As I have a new support dog, well she's 9months old now, Labrador so large dog and don't want her jumping the fences.... As the other side Is about 2 ft lower. Anyways we (me,my mum and support worker Beth) this year have started to grow some bits. Sadly had to take the grape vine out as couldn't care for it it was huge and the dog was eating alot off it. But in its place I'm hoping to put 4 new rhubarb plants, all in pots or large tubs,as I physically can't bend due to my own disabilities too...so everything we are adding is in pots or growbags. I started with strawberry plants last year and 3 types of raspberry all in their own bags. And we did potatoes and carrots last year and I tried spring onion and lettuce. This year I have the strawberry and raspberries and I've added a cherry bush/tree and also have 2 blueberry plants to go in,just needed to get the right soil for them. And we have got some rhubarb as I said.... But one type came as stumps the other is growing. I put the stump things into a pot each that the raspberry came in last year and hoping that will give them a root system before I plant into the large tubs I have for them. We are also trying seeds, parsnips, cauliflower and broccoli, watermelon 🍉 and baby sweet watermelon, tomato 🍅 but have a type called red pear. The garden also has eating and cooking apple trees, been here years aswell as pear trees and what we think are cherry trees, they are big,not like the one I have brought that won't grow bigger then 6ft and is more of a bush. We didn't get anything on them last year as we had lovely blossom on both and then had a bad bad storm and blow the lot off.so never got any fruit.hope we do this year as my new one will take a year or 2 before it fruits. But the hope is as I'm enjoying it I will continue for years to come. Could live here another 60years depending how old I get lol.... But atleast another 30years.

i've got this crazy idea of learning to grow my own vegetables and herbs in my backyard. i'm a 52 years old man, have a small paved yard and will appreciate tips on what vegetables are easier to start up with....

Great idea! For me, as beginner crops I'd recommend herbs such as parsley, oregano and rosemary. Vegetables-wise, I'd suggest lettuce, salad onions, bush/dwarf beans, potatoes in tubs, beets/beetroots, and a few zucchini/courgettes if you have room.

I've noticed that most gardeners have lots of tools for the job. Boards, netting, plants, pots, cells, potting soil, various tools, etc come etc. I'm sure most gardeners would love it if you could do a video on how you store all these things and keep them organized. I find my various tools and supplies overwhelming sometimes. You are so good at explaining that I know a video like that would be so helpful. Thank you.

in process of making two weeping beds. burying 1/4 inch hardware cloth over heat treated half pallets, line sides with metal siding. the bottom will be lined with pond liner. filled with pea gravel 1 foot. water pipe inlet straight to the bottom of the gravel on one end, outlet on the other at the top of the rock layer... its an investment but then can control what soil Im growing in and keep out the local animals of field and forest.

I am just starting to grow for the first time having finally moved in to a rented property that has a garden for the first time. As a result i am using freestanding troughlike planters. This is my first foray as an adult in to growing anything more than a few herbs in pots. I have just found your channel whilst looking up how to sow some of the various seeds that I have purchased and found it to be a treasure trove of great tips. I also discovered your Garden Planner site and have already started to make use of it, adding in some helpful flowers to the plan and pairing crops that I already have that could act as companions. Thus far I will be growing 6 varieties of chillies, some hollow crown parsnips, purple sun carrots, kitana spring onions, 2 tomato varieties (san marzano 2 and costoluto fiorentino), spaghetti squash and a large garlic variety that I forget the name of. Definately subscribing to the site.

I've just moved into my first house that has a backyard. I used to grow all my veg in pots on my patio. Hubby and me have just cleared all the weeds away and levelled the land to put in vege beds. We've got pallets exactly like what you're using. I've been feeling a little apprehensive about putting the beds down wondering if I'll be any good at vege gardening on a bigger scale like this. I'm excited but a bit nervous too. This video couldn't have come at a better time. What a weird coincidence!

i always had a huge amount strawberries, alot of different berry bushes, fig plants, couple of different herbs (alot of mint and ginger for tea for the wife ;) ) carrots, unions, rhubarb and radishes. But this year i added 3 big (90 cm high ... each 2.5+m2) raised beds and alot of containers (rectagles and round ones) ...and on top what i do usually i will start lettuces, even more ginger, alot of potatos (not everything will go in the ground at the same time ;) ) cabages, leek and kale. and some test veggies (mistakes will be made im sure ...lol) already sprouting and growing inside, which goes very well (knock on wood)... My wife is now even considering to remove 2 old raised beds in front yard to add 2 more new raised beds for even more harvest.. lol ... but first i want to see what i can grow with what i got now. Exciting times ahead. And thank you for all the welcome and helpfull advice (adding small greenhouses next year for ...... tomatos)
