My mom, rest her soul, gave me some great advice when I was young. A Civics teacher scared the crap (70's-cold war) out of me over the poss. of nuclear war. I lost sleep, couldn't eat, was really scared. I asked my mom how she made it thru WWII alone with Dad fighting overseas. She said, "You need to get ahold of yourself. You can't worry about what hasn't happened yet, you'll drive yourself crazy. Live each day as it comes. Those things may never happen."
@TheBioExplorer4 жыл бұрын
I grew up as a military brat during the cold war too. My mom was older and had lived through the Great Depression. I never felt too much stress about it because gardens, reusing everything from butter dishes to aluminum foil & cooking on a budget was just part of my life. So while I'm cautiously watching current events I'm not freaked out by any means. People just need to educate themselves and calm the F down.

I haven't heard that phrase, get ahold of yourself, in a very long time 💖 I used to hear it regularly in my family when people were upset about stuff. And it was said kindly to remind us that we can 'get ahold' of ourselves when we are getting excessive with worry or fear are upset. Thanks for your comment. It brought some nice memories back for me

@@TheBioExplorer yep. My parents always gardened, canned, dried food. When Mom said we needed potatoes one of us would go to the crawlspace under the house (it was tall enough in places to crouch in) and bring up a bowl full of home grown potatoes. I didn't know we were poor until I was grown. I guess we really weren't. But that teacher...smh.

Robin, I have been a truck driver for 35 years and I have driven solo that whole time. Regarding backing your rig, take as much time and as many pull ups you need to get into your spot. I still screw up backing. Give me 40 acres and I can't back worth a darn, give me a 9' foot wide slot and I will nail it (most times). It just takes practice.
@Pamela-ro8vh4 жыл бұрын
Harriett Shiveley is there a trick to backing a short (28’) 5th wheel with a long bed? Even with my hands at the bottom of the steering wheel, the rv has a mind of its own. Lol
@harriettshiveley99354 жыл бұрын
@@Pamela-ro8vh I have found that you need to make very slight moves with your steering wheel, put your hands where you feel most in control. Use your side mirrors. To keep yourself backing staight, if you see more of your trailer in your right mirror than your left, turn the steering wheel towards the right mirror and the trailer will start back left.( The reverse apllies when you see more of the trailer in the left mirror). Be aware of where the pivot point on your trailer is. Some trailer axles are in the center of the trailer, some farther back. Just takes practice.
@Pamela-ro8vh4 жыл бұрын
Harriett Shiveley ahhh! The seeing more of your trailer in one mirror or the other is VERY helpful. Thank you so much.

I used to get lost in open space, but tight spaces also mean points of reference. But it wasn't until I drove flatbeds and tankers that I found my groove. Tip from a boss: steer the back, not the front. For some reason that stuck with me.

You are always so positive Robin. I'm a woman of faith also. But it's hard when you hear sobbing late at night from the single mom neighbor with 2 kids who won't be able to pay her rent. It tears my heart out because staying at home without pay for those folks isn't healing. This whole apartment complex is full of "little people" who need their paychecks. I've started carrying grocery gift cards $10.00 to help when I bump into these folks. It doesn't bother me to go without a meal but it drives me crazy to have children be hungry. I hope this resolves soon before there is a serious economic collapse.

Tip of the day: me, I live in the city among the rat race. I dont RV, but for now, my girl Robin takes my hand and shows me through her eyes that awesome journey, thank you. Yet, I am a huge outdoor enthusiast, hiking and mountain biking (off road) a lifestyle that suits my sensibilities. With the days few past, I have made it a point to take a break from world new, by getting in my car and taking random aimless quite drives in the county. I look at the wide open fields and big sky and breath. I take snapshots of Gods majesty and ponder how great thou art. It grounds me as I hear that still small voice telling me the sky is not falling, and that this too will pass. I share my photos with others to remind them that fresh air still exist. So take that drive and dont forget to breath...Do you receive the today? Amen...Peace be with you all.

I’m a full timer hunkered down in a snowbird park halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. It’s almost a ghost town with the Canadians having left. There are places to get food and supplies within a 20 minute drive but for the most part this is a low population area. That’s good for me since I have asthma and am 65 so considered a higher risk if I get the virus. Several good trails not far from me for solitary hikes and contemplation. Totally not my original plan. Was on my way to San Jose to visit friends and a flight to Honolulu. A little disappointed but I have faith the trip will happen when things calm down. Nine years on the road as a solo female and learned to write all my plans in jello.

Robin, Thanks for your positivity and the care you show for the community you’ve built. I made it from northwestern New Mexico to central New Mexico to a dear friend’s spare studio apt where my dog and I can live quietly for as long as we need to. That last few hundred miles on the highways was tense, not knowing if I’d be stopped on the way because of lack of gas or by the authorities. Unusual circumstances make you think of the worst that could happen and I had this scenario that we RVERS wouldn’t be allowed to continue. Of course I had no trouble, I was able to get gas and find a place to stock up on extra fresh food before getting here. I’m now dug in with a studio space, bathroom, air bed, table and chairs, heat and lights. The van is parked safely outside, the van food and fridge cleaned out, all shipshape for going back on the road in a month or two or three. I’m grateful for what I have and especially for a good Internet connection. All the best, girl!

My husband and I sold our house and became full-time RVers February 21, 2020. We had planned for this for two years and were so excited to start our new lifestyle. We had camping reservations made through June 1st, and we had scheduled medical care for our journey, as I need intravenous infusions every 8 weeks in an outpatient setting to manage my rheumatoid arthritis. We had all the logistics worked out and we were elated to be on our way. Then the coronavirus crisis hit. Disappointed, yes, but now we just want to stay safe and protect our health, and everyone else's health. Thank goodness we have family in Florida who has allowed us to camp out on their property to ride out this storm. Our family has graciously consented for us to stay as long as necessary until it is safe to travel again. This also allows us to practice the CDC recommendations for social distancing, as we are not in close proximity to other campers. At times like this, it is such a blessing to have family around you. Hope everyone else is finding safe havens.

Wow! Just the other day I was thinking that Mother Earth is needing to be healed, we have to be stopped from our activities to allow the healing. But the healing is necessary because we caused the damage and need time to realize what we have done and change our ways. I thought if I shared those thoughts people would think I am crazy. I am so happy to hear basically the same thing being said in the poem you read. Thank you.

Regarding your Tiffin/Mercedes - IMHO - a Class C on a Ford E450 chassis is the ONLY way to go. My 2001 31' Class C is as easy and stress free to drive as my mini van, in fact, it actually rides better! The cost of the Sprinter chassis is outrageous, Mercedes service is an issue, but the main thing is you have a lot of weight (and height) on a very short wheel base. To add - I have been an RV'er for 20 years and have learned new things (especially the Highway Weather app)!! I enjoy your videos a lot, and enjoy your experiences as you encounter new things! Thanks for sharing!

100% agree on the class c. We drove a 26 ft Ford E-350 Class C and it was a smooth ride and very stable on the road. Would never drive one of those high clearance, narrow wheel base type Class Bs.

Thank you for your upbeat videos, your 'keeping it real and honest" , but kind. Can I ask you a rather personal question... well...I guess more nosy than personal.... Did you finance your Truck and 5th Wheel? I ask because I wondered if I should buy something now, get it paid off before hitting the road...or if it is possible to work from the road, live and pay the payments on something like a traveling rig outfit as well to be able to afford gas, food, cellular, etc.....I have a monthly income from a pension ... and a 401k from my current job.. but I am only 56...so I will have to earn an income while traveling.... ( I am starting a business I can take on the road with me) I am excited, but scared too... I don't want to make my expenses too too much for hitting the road.... Any thoughts you could share? Thank you for being there for us hopefuls.... and being the beacon of hope and positivity.

At that point, we will be quarantined inside the facility grounds until who knows when. Texas is already seeing cases popping up. We expect it to grow exponentially, very rapidly. I wish I was closer to retirement. I'd be packing up and getting the heck out of Dodge.

Hi Robin, Good to see you again, and thank you for all the research work you do for our benefit. I had thought I might someday be a nomad, but at 77, I realize that I have too many things in my house that I love and wouldn't want to get rid of. I am an artist, as you mentioned you are, but am fortunate to have a whole bedroom full of all kinds of supplies, so would need a ton of storage. Plus I don't want to be away from my grandchildren. In this emergency situation I am really enjoying staying in, and doing lots of things in my house that I have neglected because I was always out running around. I so enjoy your wonderful videos and share your videos with my brother who has a very small Skamp?(-something like that), that he bought cheap and is fixing up. I also bought a lot of your gear for Christmas presents and for myself, and two of your ebooks...great stuff. Keep up the good work and stay safe and FREE! Oh, if I take a trip this Fall, can I visit the Harvest Home sites, just to see them, even though I would be staying in hotels and driving my car? I was wondering about getting a membership. Thanks, Gloria

Hey Robin! Listening to your account of the wall separating on your last rig, this demonstrates my belief that factory RV s are for the most part poorly built with cheap materials. I bought a used shuttle bus (22’) and had it converted. I used high quality wood, and all organic fabrics, flooring, and latex foam, as well as stainless steel or glass and minimal plastic. The shuttle bus was a church bus. 2009 Chevy express 3500 cutaway with a Goshen shell with 12,500 miles. It’s very high quality and solid. I hope people consider building their own rig. There are so many pros and few cons! Happy travels everyone!

Good Morning Robin! So glad you call us Birdwatchers! As an amateur birder it feels like you’re directing your comments to me! Ha! As to the slide covers....would using a leaf blower before closing the slides be a solution? Back story: I was using a vacuum to remove the ‘beach’ from the cab of my truck and a neighbor stopped and suggested: move the truck outside, open all the doors and use a leaf blower! It was genius! Since most folks with a 5th wheel have a ladder and the leaf blower isn’t a huge space hog or energy pig, it might be an option! I am hunkered down in Las Cruces in an RV park $340 a month - not my favorite but propane is one store down and everything that is needed is pretty close by. Can't wait until the state parks open again. My two favorites are elephant butte and Pancho Villa State park.

Hi Robin, I am a 67 year old woman, solo RVer. I pull a 34 foot 5th wheel with my F250 diesel truck. I LOVE it. There is no strength involved in hitching and unhitching. I am short, so I use a foldable step so I can reach the hitch lever. In my opinion, any woman of any age could do this if they really want to. Safe travels to you. Love your channel. :-)

Started home and planned 1st night at Blue Water Casino. Ha!! Rez Cops ran me off. So I can tell you Cal-Nev-Ari rest area is really nice. Had to change from going up through Nevada on 93 to I-15 thru Utah. Utah sure does NOT have enough Rest Areas, had to stop at a Flying J. Tonight is my last night on the road, then I'll be home again and mooch off myself for my 14 day quarantine. Travel safe!

My hubby and I have a Grand Design and added after market slide toppers. They were fairly inexpensive for the job they do. Would recommend you do that to save your slide. Stay healthy and looking forward to seeing what you have for us! We just got back to home base to hunker down and wait this out. Loved what you read at the end.

Hi Robin. Always great ideas and content. I wish you were President!! You would get some shit done in fast order! Lol I’m learning that I don’t need everything I think I do. I don’t need to order on Amazon as much, or go out and spend money that I should actually save. I’ve been baking biscuits, bagels and bread. I love to cook, and it’s given me such a feeling of comfort. Living alone is hard at times, because I get energized by people. But, I keep in touch with friends and family by phone or text. We are such a spoiled society. I think the exercise of not having anything we want when we want it is going to be a very valuable learning curve for us all! ❤️ Love ya, sweet girl.

Happy to see you are doing well. I am locked down taking care of my mom with Parkinson's and heart failure. Chicago is on government mandated lock down. As I watch my childhood friends go on with life as usual. Hair designer friends who have not shut down their businesses, posting hugging people who came in to get their hair done. Went to the grocery store to get my mom's meds and was pushed down by a woman who wanted all 3 gallons of milk that were there. It's just amazing to watch some humans nature. Really interesting.

Thank you so much for your videos! I have been planing my move into a Fifth Wheel for 2-3 years, and this all went down just before I was about to go shopping. I found a long term place to park at a friend’s and since I rent, and all my regular income just dried up, I’m planing to go ahead as long as I can find one that I can afford in cash. (Without touching the “oh sh*t find”.)

@@tracyk.8306 wrapping a table post with natural jute ( usually very inexpensive) or even a Dollar Tree door mat and then rubbing it down with catnip works great, I'vedone both. I give nip to outdoor cats where I live ,on the weekends , while maintenance is doing outdoor repairs, painting, when there is tension in the air or I see they are nervous, hurting, just not up to their norms....and. also, just for fun. I learned recently that there are different kinds of catnip .A super sweet Male polydactile cat is just not interested in the $5 container kind that I get from Walmart every month for 5 years now, but he absolutely loves the kind a neighbor gets from Aldis and though they both smell the same to me( like tea) , the other cats show zero interest in that one.lol. In other words, try different kinds, if they do not take right to it. I kept the litterbox in two areas, under the table and then, under a benchseat after removing a vent cover. It worked well . I stored excess litter and sealed food on one side and the box was on the other side. I used freshstep litter and the orders were minimal with fans going...
@tracyk.83064 жыл бұрын
Christine Seaborg Thank you for those good tips! The jute idea is an interesting idea, too! I’m also thinking about where kitties could go in high places in an RV. We have 2 and one is adventurous while the other spends her time lounging during the day (she’s quite the princess LOL). Good tip on litter too, as I know we can’t use the chicken feed anymore when we hit the road...I think it would attract too many wild critters.

@@tracyk.8306 The cat we had years ago found hiding spots under drawers, inside cabinets and where the pipes go, under the sink.... There is often extra space hidden behind where one would normally put things at. If you leave things open, they will surely teach you all about cool hiding places for cats. Lol

We are on lockdown in our house here in northern IL and super sad that it looks like our summer camping will be impacted. I'm also sad because my mom passed away 3 weeks ago and we planned her memorial service for May 2nd and I'm not sure we'll be able to have it and that is what I'm most upset about. As far as the lockdown, we're fine. Plenty of food and no big financial issues and my husband has been working from home for years so it's really not much of a change for us at all and since I'm an introvert, I've been training for this my whole life. LOL I'm just baking and cooking and chilling. You stay safe out there.

I always look forward to your videos. They are informative and joyful. One does not realize how well adapted you are to hibernating, until it becomes mandatory. hehe. My dreams and (sometimes dwindling) hopes are to get to travel again. I was always happiest on the road, even when it was to just go across the state. I have an idea to travel the Appalachian Trail. I can't walk it, but I could visit each town all the way north. I think of going to the RTR in January's. There is also the Continental Divide. You help me reinforce my hopes. Thank you Robin.

Ssup Robin!🐦🙋🏽♀️ Love the pompadour🙌🏽🙌🏽 I know sprinters are all the rave now with Vanlife; however, I would never get a Mercedes anything. I had a Mercedes S430 for about 5 years. I inherited it from my grandmother. It was a tank and drove beautifully; however, I paid no less than $1000 whenever it went in for service.Parts & labor are expensive AF! Let’s not forget the gas. It was expensive to insure as well. I hung onto it because it was my Gran’s. The air conditioner didn’t work, all four tire sensors needed to be replaced, brakes, new air shocks, etc. it got too expensive so I sold it. “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”🤣🤣

Hi Robin, My family/father always showed me everything he reviewed with my brother, women can do anything men can ( using my Dad's words). It's about staying calm and thinking though a situtaion. F350 was a great move, you want a high payload, Dually's can have the highest in many cases, also pulling is high(5th wheels are heavy and have high wind load). We regards to the sprinter van, it's necessary to make some upgrades: ( My E350) Rear Sway Bar 1.1/2, Front 1.3/8, Bilstein Shocks rear/front, SumoSprings Front/Back, Bilstein Steering Stabillizer. This made a Huge difference, we go 75 MPH in 30 Degree winds. Making less shaking , resulting in less things will break/come loose. You can purchase the same items for a sprinter van . Also a factor Don't over load your Van, my van has up to 2,540 Payload, many of the sprinters are lower ( # Stated on side of front doors). Thats the items you add in your Van once you head out on the road. One of the reason I decided to purchase on a Ford E350 was the Payload and the gas , instead of diesel fuel. I paid 45K less for the Ford, 10 Gals per mile - Sprinter 14 gals not worth extra cost for Sprinter for me ( everyone is different do the numbers) Cost of my upgrades: $1,219.00 ( SDTruckSprings.com) they are good people have low pricing and good support. You don't have to do all these upgrades, but I would recommend you do. Thanks Robin love your video's, stay save !

Robin, looking forward to your upcoming videos!! LOVE the poem, thanks for sharing that. As difficult as these times are, it truly IS an opportunity positive change! I am loving working from home, which I was doing a couple days a week anyway, I could totally work from anywhere. The gym is closed, so every morning I am in my yoga room, starting each day out great with my yoga practice. NO commuting in traffic. So much more flexibility and balance in my life. I would love to become a nomad, my husband and I love traveling in our TT!! He is a jobsite superintendent in commercial construction, so he can't work from the road. Using this time to also, get rid of "stuff" and lighten our load at home! You are truly an inspiration, Robin! Thanks for sharing your nomadic lifestyle with us!
