Hi, I have a question regarding cellphone/data service. I've currently been living in BC Canada for the past 4 yrs and before then, in Scandinavia, even though I am a US citizen. Moved with my adopted parents to Sweden when I was 12 so, I have no clue as to what cell service/data providers are best in the US. Both $$$$ wise as well as coverage and also data/internet. I'll be on a budget but, realize that I'll need a way to get in touch with someone if something happens as well as I want to be able to stay in touch with my adult children that are still over in Sweden. I don't know if you've already made a video on this subject but if not, could you please let us know which providers you consider to be the best, most affordable for the most data and cellphone service? Thank you and thank you so much for all of your highly informational real life information and also it's always wonderful to see your happy smile. ❤❤ //Solani

What I understand is that it isn't the vehicle BATTERY that charges the house batteries. It is the vehicle's alternator that actually charges the vehicle battery up to top level first, then it will charge the house batteries once that is done However, this happens only if the vehicle has had either a separator or an isolator installed and wired properly. Most, if not all, commercially built RVs have already had this system installed right from the factory).

Great video as always. Love the Q & A. I've been asking the same question for months now and either you're not seeing it or you've got too many other questions that are more pertinent you need to answer, and I totally understand that. The question I keep asking is "Will you please show us some of your artwork/paintings you have done?" That brings me to my next question which is more along the lines of the ones you answer; if I were to do the RV living life style (I think about it DAILY!!!) I would do it so I can spend WAAAYYY more of my life painting and drawing than I do (most time now is spent working to pay mortgage, bills, etc.. you know). My art studio requires space. I thought of buying a high top extended cargo van, converting it into living space and pulling a decent sized cargo trailer for my studio & art supplies space. I just bought a brand new $1800 easel that I LOVE and it requires 7 feet of ceiling space. Ugh. Most RV/van ceilings are 6 feet. 5th wheels have the right kind of ceiling space, but that limits my vehicle. Any way around this? And do you think hauling my art studio as a cargo trailer would work? So.. as far as my artwork... I think I could sell my stuff and making a living. I think I could evolve as an artist very fast if I had the time to wrap my life around it. Maybe not immediately, and I have enough $$ to survive many years until I could get my artwork sales off the ground. I don't think I'd even need a whole lot of time to get it off the ground. When I make time to do my artwork now, it DOES sell! So, I'm really encouraged. Your videos have always reached me in ways others don't because you now have time to do what you're good at and to do what you LOVE... your writing. You're speakin my language.

Yeah Robin! I don't have a question so much as several comments. 1. Thank you for not choosing Patreon. I watched and got hooked on several RV channels and then came along Patreon. What I was able to see changed and comments pertaining to Patreon-patrons-only got me discouraged. I dropped those individual channels. Sorry guys. I learned a lot from them but couldn't afford to pay to see more. 2. Thank you for sharing info on how your friend's travel with their birds. We are leaving for a long trip and have decided that we must bring our African Gray parrot. Problem: We have a 5th wheel, a truck, 4 people, 2 dogs, and the parrot. We have not been able to come up with a reasonable solution except to place the parrot in the RV. I am not happy about it, but there is no way around it. Last time we had a long trip we left the bird w a caretaker. Upon our return, he had gone into a serous depression and plucked his feathers for 6 months. We don't want to repeat that. 3.The Boy reminds me of a black cat we had while growing up. His name was Mister. 4. Sorry I got windy.

Another great Q! So glad I popped in because I was wondering about the pet thing too. My two Min-Pins are elderly and don't handle temperature extremes at all! A question for you...as an artist...where do you keep your supplies and what do you do with the finished products? I look at my craft room and try to imagine moving that into an RV and it occurs to me my RV is already over-weight and I haven't even started on the kitchen yet. Haha! I'm also a writer, but that doesn't seem like a problem like the arts and crafts would be. Should I just plan on towing a trailer for all my art stuff (supplies and finished products)? And...can you set out a table to sell in person at any of the campgrounds or is that frowned upon?

I love the idea your going to be writing some mystery books too. I have over 4000 books on my kindle. Just love everything you do. After I lost my husband I began traveling on my own. Discovered it’s what makes me the happiest. As you have learned, losing someone you love makes you realize how short life is. Make the most of it. This year I’m parking my RV on 12 acres in Dufur, OR. Enjoying the summer months then decking my SUV out for traveling the winter months to warmer locations. I can get into more backcountry that way. I’ve bought most of your recommendations. My favorite is the Aeiusny Solar Generator. I take it everywhere. Did my first vintage flea market and it helped sell several items. I could plug them in and show people they worked. Just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you and your no drama channel.

Eventually I donated the books box by box to our local public library where they added a few of the books to their collection and the rest of them they sold. They then use that money to buy more books for the library. That gave me a great deal of peace and made me very happy knowing that those books would have good homes. My very best to you. For the person who loves to read, you can mentioned audio books, but you can also download an app on your phone or tablet to borrow ebooks or audio books through your local library. My library uses the Overdrive app. For really popular books, there can be a waiting list, but you just put it on hold and when it is available, you can download the book. It works great and there is a huge list of libraries that participate. I live in a regular house and love this app.

Don't you have to specifically have the special wiring from the alternator to the house batteries? I'm hoping to have my own camper van in future but had heard you need to add this on in a camper van (not a standard feature). Where is the wiring usually run from the alternator to the back of the vehicle where the house batteries reside?
@Tatiacha5 жыл бұрын
@@LisaFaiss If you buy a professionally built out camper van then the alternator is already wired to charge the house battery. If you buy a van and build it out yourself then you would need to put in what is called a battery isolator which is what hooks the alternator to the batteries you would install for the house part

Hey Robin! I love how Big Boy has white fur that emphasizes his mouth shape, almost like he's been drinking cream. Once again, a fabulous video, full of great info, thank you so much! In my RV search, I've come across a damaged RV website (insurance company $ recoup?) but ALOT of the RVs are damaged due to fire or water/flooding. So, I have a possible question for your next Q&A or maybe something you can cover in a separate video... what are the statistics for the top 5 or 10 most common ways an RV is ruined/damaged and are RVs a big fire hazard? Personally, I would never have an open flame inside an RV, would probably never even have propane on board anywhere and only waterproof flint matches, but still, overused electrical appliances can catch fire too i.e., the ceiling fan motor or an overheated fridge. Sorry if this is a "Debbie Downer" topic, but forewarned is forearmed, especially in regards to safety, for instance maybe change out the fan if you buy a very old RV - I'm thinking this might be why some sites don't allow RVs that are too old due to a safety risk?

On leaving pets to go for a hike or shopping, we recently go a wifi thermometer that will warn us through an app if the temp or humidity goes outside our preset parameters. We tested it over memorial day weekend while we went mountain biking. It worked great and gave us piece of mind to leave them in case the power went out. We also don't go too far from them when we go. We did end up getting to the trail, getting ready and then heading back to turn up the AC for them. Back to the trail and they were fine the rest of the time. Prior to arriving at a campsite, we use Google maps to locate the campsite, a nearby emergency vet, and a human ER. We have 2 dogs and one trip one jumped off a high bed on to a tile floor and got hurt, we were unprepared and didn't know where to go. We will never make that mistake again. Last weekend Lauire got bit by a tick for the first time. We knew where the ER and urgent care was if we needed it. Dr. Google said wait a month so we are in that phase now. 😔 Good luck and safe travels.

I wrote this in another of your video. If you have lead acid house batteries. Yes you can charge them with your vehicle. My truck camper not only has solar but also I have a long battery cable that goes from truck to house batteries. Which has an on and off switch. And a quick disconnect for when I take camper off. Oh I should tell you how to make the quick disconnect. Go to a welding supplier. Tell them you need the cable and connection for a MILLER welder. And connection for extended cables. Hook a small cable ( standard battery cable) to your positive hook the shield ( female) side of connection to other end. On long cable connect male side. Hook other end to house battery. Do same for other side. MAKE SURE IT IS ONLY ON OR CONNECTED WHILE ENGINE IS RUNNING. For on off switch. First most Rv stores have cable on off switches. Hook small cable to battery positive then to switch with other end. Then hook long cable to other side of switch ( if quick disconnect stop and go to ###) Next other end of long cable to house batts ### use short cable that would hook to battery. In other word short from vehicle battery to switch another short from switch to female disconnect. Then long from male to house batts. Only do this with house lead acid. I recommend lead acid 24DC deep cycle BATTERIES THEY ARE 12v EACH AND 101 Ah. Compared to lithium they are same size cost $65 and weight 45lbs to lithium 30 lbs each. And you can buy at Walmarr or auto parts stores. Also you can use the 27DC OR 29DC WHICH weight 60lbs vs lithium 30 and are 108Ah or 114AH. But after much though I rec the 24DC I have a off grid house I have been using them in for over 10 years. As long as you keep them full of water and don't deep drain they last 10 years. And you can rebuild for $25 each. You want them to charge to 14.2v and discharge to 12.0v they last long time this way. And yes you can run a slow cooker with them. Buy ac110v and use invertor the 12v slow cookers are junk and don't last. I stop using my slow cooker and didn't mention in other post BECAUSE I have a solar oven I made. I use my crock and lid from slow cooker in it. So slow cooker is now. Done by solar oven. My solar oven cook area is 24" wide by 18" tall and 18" deep. Its big. I can put in a lot of stuff. I also cook bread in it. BTW doing it thus way will work. My house has TEN 29DC and with my truck I can recharge then in an hours. If yours is not doing this. It one if two problems. Alternator is too small my truck is a standard pickup chevy alt. Or you cable from vehicle battery to house bat is too small. Or bad connection.

One thing that I have noticed watching van videos is that the majority of people change not only their rigs but the amount of stuff that they bring with them. Most of them realize that they have brought way way way too much stuff. I think the expression that fits here is live and learn. Best wishes, MM

Hey Robin! I love your site and have learned so much. I was wondering how you keep up with the weather? Do you have a weather radio, or do use weather apps? Also, how do you watch television? Do you have some type of service, like Dish?

You have mentioned that you are plant based. How do you shop for your fruits and vegetables? Do you shop often? Do you hit the farmers markets? How difficult or easy do you find eating this way? I just found your channel this week, and I have wanted to do this since I was a kid watching Trapper John MD as Gonzo lived in his Winnie in the hospital parking lot. I'm 50! It's time!

Robin, I'm not an Ever yet.I have a suggestion though at Wal-Mart in the blanket area they sell a lightweight throw blanket that keeps your body heat in. It's called (Micro Plush) they cost $5-$15.00. It's NOT MICRO FLEECE but Micro plush. Keeps you very warm in winter. Anita

How did I miss your poopsicle video?!?!? I'm going back now and looking it up. I thought I had viewed all of your videos. I've been watching you for quite some time. I just bought a battery monitor similar to the one you showed only it is digital and just shows numbers. I've looked at battery monitoring systems, but I'm not quite sold on the idea. I do, however, want to get a tire monitoring system and I am narrowing down the possibilities now. Do you have any ideas on a tire monitoring system? Thanks, as always, for another terrific video. I'm so glad big boy stuck around a little while longer today.

I'm really glad you explained how you and other KZbinrs get a little bit of money from us by watching the ads. So now I just let the ads go and go and go while I read the comments below and of course the thumbs up. I'm still trying to figure all this out about KZbin coming on board with it late. Mostly for personal and to help others. Bottom line, I'm not out any time since I'm reading the comments and it helps you to! Simple yes ...but I'm probably a simple person lol

Online library... use local library access where you can "borrow" a digital or audio book through the library card you possess.

I bought 2 of those EvaDry things that arrived today from Amazon. I read on my Nook (from Barnes and Noble) and I can lend books through it. My RV neighbors said they wrapped the bottom of their RV with cardboard boxes opened up for insulation (tacky but effective). 15% off $79 is only $67 for the Harvest Hosts membership. Not bad at all! Sadly, I had to turn in my drinking card 7 years ago today, so no wine for me. But Happy Sobriety Day! (I'm a total neophyte. Bought my first RV one week ago today). My husband says that your not supposed to let your house battery drain below 50%. Happy Trails Everyone ❣

Another option for books is check on local library Friends of the Library Bookstores. People donate and most of the time you can find all the different categories in really good condition. They ask very reasonable prices and proceeds go back to funding library events and reading programs. Some of the Friends have bookstores inside a library and some have a quarterly sale in a huge warehouse setting for like nine days straight. Enjoy. I carry Daisy’s vet record in the glove box. I also mark vet places on the google map when I am researching the direction I am headed in. I look for a shipping location that I can get packages en route, vet, grocery stores, RV Supply places, hardware store, propane source, laundry, Panda Express for their veg egg rolls, etc. it sure helps to look ahead Instead of going into an area blind.

Love your videos, but wanted to share that in my 2001 Class C the engine battery does not have any connection to the battery under my step. My " house" battery only gets power from shore power or the generator. It may be beneficial for the woman new to RVing to stop at a rv repair shop or rv seller and ask guestions about her specific rig.

For House Batteries there is a three stage charge cycle, Bulk, Absorption and Float. Bulk is when the charger is current limited and will end when the battrey voltage reaches 14.1 to 14.8 Volts. Absorption is when the voltage is held at 14.1 to 14.8 Volts and the current will drop to some low value 8 amps is where the the charger switch over to float (13.2 to 13.8 Volts) and will till the chaging stops as when the sun goes down. The battery chrage table you can get that show % charged is based on a battery at rest for a period of time after charging or being loaded. I have seen the voltage drop when the battery get loaded.the only true measure of battery charge level is the amout of Amps you removed by loading or replaced by charging. You have to watch out when you do a short time charge as you surface charge the battery not fource the charge deep in to the battery plates over time it will kill the battery. the charge is not complete till you in float charge levels. for your information 14.8 is Bulk, Absorpt 3 hours at 14.8 Volts till battery current is 8 Amp then it switches over to Float at 13.2 Volts.

First thing...GET RID OF YOUR "Instant Pot". It is an energy/electric hog. My go to pot is a German "stove top" pressure cooker (Fissler). Very expensive but worth every dime. They have come a long way in recent years. I use about 1.5 cup water to cook just about anything. Propane is cheap, that makes me happy

I was surprised that you recommended having the propane on when driving. From what I understand, it puts you at much greater risk of having a terrible fire. It is better to get your fridge cooler than normal before heading out turn off the propane and keep the fridge closed while traveling. Thanks for your continuum to the RV community.

Hi Robin, first off a big thanks too you for all the useful information you give us. But I have noticed a few times that you have mentioned that you do watercolor artwork. I love seeing other people's artwork and wondered if you have done a video on your art before and I missed that video or maybe you don't want to show your artwork. I know I'd love to see your paintings

Robin, I watch the nomad Casey Roman on YT too, and she uses DampRid, which is a pail with some stuff enclosed in it, and it absorbs all the extra moisture, lasts months, and you just throw it out when it's all used up. It looks like a gallon pail of ice cream (but isn't, of course). It's pretty reasonably priced and the best part is you don't have to plug anything in (or use batteries). God bless.

Creativity RV - Thank You SO Much for answering my Power Question! So glad you like my name, lol, Dad’s hero & now mine, is Carol Shelby! 😎 My Rental RV experience definitely was an Adventure...! I wish I could tell you that as soon as I got home, I went and purchased one but sadly, NO Way!!! I knew it would be “tough” but nothing like what I experienced 😳 All Props & Praise to you though for cutting it alone as a Female Nomad! As for me, I’m going back to Cruising (water) and maybe only small trips around Florida. Going through tunnels & on windy bridges with a 32 footer, around NY and not being able to travel on Parkways, just about broke me! May God continue to Bless You & your Boy on your Journey ✌🏻

If you're going to be parked for a while, bales of hay stuffed under your rig all the way around, are a great insulator. The only issue might be mice....????
