Both the Ford Fiesta and the Volkswagen Polo are new for 2018. It's a rivalry that has gone on for over a decade in South Africa with the Polo winning out on sales but the Fiesta winning in value for money and driving satisfaction.

Strange to see that the "top spec" models are being compared while majority of the market goes for the middle spec or lower range in manual. I have test driven both of these and to be honest, the outcome will be different if tested in manual. In automatic, VW's DSG box is always a winner, in the manual the 6th gear and extra KW on the Fiesta takes the cake, engine sounds a lot better to. If we can get a review in mid/lower spec that would be more relevant to most buyers, it would be awesome!

This is a mid range polo. It might have the R-line package but it's still a comfort line. So it sits above the trendline and below the Highline.

I don't know why people thing that the polo looks better. It kinda looks the same like the old gen but the fiesta has a totally refreshed front and rear end which is better in every aspect other than the engine specs which is also almost evenly matched.

Actually the Fiesta automatic is a really good car, the criticism laid about Fords automatics is kind of lame, do remember the VW comes with a dual clutch auto DQ200S series automatic which is prone to clutch slip and wear issues which will cost a bomb to replair specially after 75-90k kms of running, Thr Fords traditional torque converter might be slower but is far more proven and reliable and cheaper gearbox.

jandj Godwin I'm old school driver, the clutch pedal and shifting gears excites me in a car, and I can drive that manual during peak hour Sandton traffic without issues. What you say about these DSG 'boxes is true, there's about 3 or 4 of cars in for repairs at any VW dealerships right now, and they're missing gearboxes which are being repaired or maybe replaced. Anyway I don't have anything against auto 'boxes, I just prefer manual (also because you can slip it into neutral and let it roll when running low on fuel)😂😂😂😂😎😂😉

The R-Line has more than half the power of the GTI presuming you go for the 7 speed DSG or the 6 speed manual it has 115 HP. Only the lesser 5 speed manual has 95 HP.

If you don't mind shifting gears yourself I feel the Opel Corsa 1.4T Sport is a better buy. It might be a bit older compared to the new Polo and Fiesta but still offer great value for money and the great thing is, the updated Corsa Sport comes with all options included so nothing to add.

Based on what, the thumbnail? Both cars can come fitted with optional LEDs headlamps while DRLs are standard. The Polo also comes with rear LEDs as part of the package.

I would personally prefer both cars to have 1.6 litre 4 cylinder petrol engines and straight-forward manual transmitions. I also think these cars are way too overpriced. If I had to choose a Polo I would go for the Vivo shape before it became known as the Polo Vivo, specifically the pre-facelift version (2002-2006), and if I had to choose a Fiesta I would go for the one from which the Figo originated, specifically the facelift version (2005-2008).

Flawed review. Areas compared seemed to have been skewed towards the polo’s strengths. No comparison was made of driving dynamics, which we all know the fiesta is famed for. To determine the winner the presenter then says resale values (in future) will make up for the immediate R30k extra value on standard features and longer service plan that you get in the fiesta. Yikes. Looks to me that the winner was decided long before this ‘review’ was conducted.

I have the 2015 ecoboost trend line and it is pure fun to drive. Need to upgrade the exhaust though to give it a nice sound. But the 92kw is just enough for the long road and city driving.

You make the best movies for us to watch becuase there is note a single special effects like hollywood or england i know this for a fact becuase i even lived in england and i saw hollywood movies lets move on hastily. Remember we live in south africa so your analyis of the two cars is perfect as we see becuase you speak on them then we see them using sight bud the one problem is that here we must also speak of crime. Crime you say? Why crime? What does crime have to do with anything about polo vs. fieasta? Trusth is as such the poleo wething is more of a hijag risk so we are always worried that this result will be death sooner on the poolo than the fiester so in such a instants i would have to say itis a one criterion that you had note well approved for purchase. I am aware that as a journalist you must push the facts through bud remember we are also subjective about moest thinks so let's agree to disagree and agree on the fiesta. The VW looks good because it has the R-line pack. The titanium is s range toppling and if the stline or a vinagale version was to come in South Africa. Features is a problem for me with Polo, you have to spend spend spend, R13k more and you still want a sunroof

In terms of driving enjoyment if it’s not a Ford then you're probably going to be bored. There’s no denying that in this segment Ford knows how to build a dynamic and fun to drive car better than anyone else. I’m a Ford guy so I would obviously take the fiesta over anything else, but that’s not to say any of the competitors are bad, that polo looks really solid, but we all desire different things and for me the fiesta is the one I’d drive home. Side note... If anyone reading this is actually going to buy either of these cars, please choose a manual, #SaveTheManual. You take all the fun out of these sorts of cars when you buy the auto.

You compare the top version of Polo with Titanium which is not fare. You should better compare Polo R Line with Fiesta Vignale and see the real difference. Fiesta is much more premium car than Polo especially Vignale. I don't even say about fun to drive which is better. The only difference that Polo is better than Fiesta is the rear seat space but if you want a lot of space don't buy supermini buy a Golf or Focus.

I'll never buy a Ford. Those things catch fire faster than a matchstick. The customer care for Ford Kuga owners has been shameful from Ford's side. And there have been a scourge of breakins in the current Fiesta model in Johannesburg because of the silly plastic mechanisms in the boot locks. My friend's Fiesta has been broken into twice this year alone. If that's not been changed, it's not worth the risk of buying.

From the comments here I am guessing VW sells it's vehicles in more trim levels than GTI and R-Line? Yet nearly every VW review seems to include one or the other trim which seems to make for a bit of a bias? Speaking of biases, as a Ford owner I would probably lean towards the Fiesta, but I do have to admit it would be an incredibly difficult choice between these 2 cars. Since I usually buy a mid-spec car, my decision would have to take into account what I would be getting for my money by not buying top-on-the-range. BTW, I once owned a 1st gen. Fiesta, a great car let down by not having a 5th gear for the manual transmission. Unfortunately, neither of these cars will be available here in the U.S. Ford cruelly giving us the 1st gen. Fiesta and the generation before the one tested here before deciding to pull all sedans off the market.

Kommentator I wouldn't go far and say worse quality and worse in all aspects, but the Fiesta has some good points on its side as well, 1. Way better standard safety and tech kits 2. The Automatic in Ford is far more proven and reliable unit, I wont ever forget VWs dual clutch issues, even I had faced this and gosh thr cars resale dippped like crazy because of gearbox based issues. 3. Please drive Fiesta on corners before saying Polo is outright better, sure nobody is racing cars on road, but after driving both, I can confidently say the Fiesta has that charming live nature that Polo lacks, its sedate, strict and too clinical drive, somewhat boring. So for some people the Fiesta is a better buy.

Straight away no. Titanium is not the top model with Fiesta and you should be comparing the R line with the St line. 95 or 115 ps in the polo whilst the Fiesta has 100, 125 or 140ps options available to it. Fiesta is cheaper and in terms of quality the two are pretty much level pegging. Yes the polo is bigger but aren't we buying small cars? If we need a bigger car then look at a compact family car, Focus or golf. They drive again very similarly with the Fiesta being slightly quicker and more responsive, plus with the Fiesta having over 12 different derivatives you can easily get the car that drives the way you'd like. Again as you say in the video the different derivatives in the Fiesta come well equipped as standard and to have the same from a polo will cost substantially more so of course it's resale value will be higher... it's a more expensive car to begin with. Polo having beats, Fiesta having Bang and Olfsen there's is not much between the sound systems in the cars. Granted these are the two best small cars you can buy especially in terms of value for money and driving experience but the Fiesta is still the best and no other small cars come close to these two. Rather than listen to videos, see the cars in the flesh and have someone passionately try and sell you one before you make your choices people

Fiesta is a top car, been a top seller overseas along with it's bigger brother, the Focus, for years. Comes with Sync 3, which is head and shoulders over anything VW has. Not to mention the international award winning engine 4 years in a row. Well specced and priced, it's almost a crime as to why it does not do better than it does in SA. Great value for money. R25k extra + interest, for the same spec on VW?? No thanks.

ATE Continental Freins à disque avants ATE Continental qui équipent la Fiesta nouvelle neuve actuelle:voyez ,où plutôt écouter ce qui se passe lorsqu'on freine,c'est assourdissant,et ceci n'est qu'une partie de ces freins lamentables,car EN PLUS ,à l'arret,en tournant le volant à droite, comme à gauche,on doit suporter un craquement métallique,tout le temps.! Pour le chef d'atelier,c'est normal,mais après des milliers de kilomètres maintenant,les crissements de tôle en terminaison de freinage sont toujours làl et aussi dans les braquage de roues à l'arret! Pas la moindre amélioration! Mais ceci n'est pas sans conséquence pour Ford,car à cause de ces ATE Continental,autour de moi,plus personne ne veut prendre une Ford neuve.Qui voudrait avoir,à vie,une voiture qui fait un tel vacarme?! Qui plus est,invendable!
