For what it's worth, I've had 3 high-millage wet belt customs and never had an issue. Many people think Ford underestimated the service intervals; dirty oil degrades the oil quicker - they recommend 25k, but I've always performed a full service every 12.5k and never had any issues. And it's recommended by some to replace at 75k, even if that is OTT with regular servicing, and nearly half what Ford suggested. There were also specific early issues with belts Ford used that were covered under a recall - this exacerbated the issue, but the issues where relating to only early models, and resolved in later revisions of the engine. I suspect the real-world issue is proportionally low as long as the engine is maintained. Lastly, although it's the same engine, the Ford Euro 6 has had a number of revisions, and I suspect this engine has been further "refined". I can't imagine a company like VW wouldn't have scrutinised the engine; they will have to deal with the ongoing repairs under their own guarantee. All being said, I am surprised they didn't come out with a new engine, but satisfied with what I will be getting
@UrbanPlumbers7 ай бұрын
wet belt is still an issue. You have to change it at around 80k miles and not ford recommended 160k miles. I have a custom from new - 80k on the clock, serviced by ford with all correct intervals. Ford advised that the belt didn't need changing - I requested it anyway - when they did that they also had to change the sump as the original belt already half disintegrated. Same happened to others with Customs - belts changed at around 70-80k were already falling apart. Generally custom is exactly the same as other transits I had in the past - good till around 80k miles then they start to cause trouble. Mine already had new injectors, a belt changed, a squeaky clutch changed twice and several mostly unresolved electrical faults. I wouldn't keep them for more than 100k / 5 years now. I hope the new VW will be a better build quality as waiting for it to change from my current custom. I wouldnt buy another Ford now. I am really hoping VW will have a VW engine and not wet belt Ford one.

Based on the Amarok vs the Ranger, the VW will have different texture finishes on the plastics, the seats will have different upholstery, and there is a lot more that will be different than you might imagine. Not like recent Fords have been badly made, and if they could take how the Transits ride and handle and implement that into the new Transporter, it’s going to be an amazing van. I don’t doubt the general build quality either, but it’s going to be interesting to see if the Ford and VW will share all the same engines, and who is supplying them.

Injectors went also some other issues however it drove great and hate to offend but ran rings around our T5 in terms of refinement and handling. Simply no comparison. However while the new version has improvements there’s some real drawbacks, the wheel arches are HUGE, roof lower so more awkward loading motorcycles, no longer any overhead storage or sunglasses glasses holder, less lights in cabin, (is coat hook gone?), Most annoying the jack used to be neatly hidden behind panel inside step. Load space smaller and bulkhead protrudes into load space more than before. Also on screen heating always inconvenient on the move. I’m on the fence but no doubt it drives great. I doubt the VW quality will be any different as made on same line but will be good to see what they do to differentiate it. Cheers

Ford underestimated the service intervals for the current Custom, which has caused many of the issues reported - dirty oil degrades the belt quicker. I do mine every 12.5k (Ford recommends 25k). Ford recommends replacing the belt every 100k (down from the original 120k), although many choose to do it sooner, and it costs about £800 (not ideal, but it saves having to repair/ replace an engine). Maintenance is key here, more so than on a chain-driven engine. Many post pictures of old belts that look new, even with high mileage and no doubt because they have looked after their van.

I personally can’t see the new transporter selling as well as it has done in the past. Especially to VW enthusiasts. The two main reasons you bought the transporter was it was a step up to the transit, mainly due to the IRS. Then secondly was it’s heritage. 70 odd years gone. And as someone who has a 67 split screen in the family it’s sad to see. I know VW said years ago they where joining up with ford to break into the pickup market in America but that’s such a closed and tough market I never really believed it and think now it was just a cover up to save money and develop a new van.

Saying that the new Transit does looks more grown up and a bit more classy. I’ve actually been and priced up a new Transit out of interest, because if the T7 just a Ford with VW badge anyway, I don’t see the point getting the VW as the costs are surely going to be higher for the VW and it’s the same van! When I drive the VW, I feel warm and fuzzy inside 😂 if I got the new T7, it would feel like a fraud, as it’s not a VW! I’m torn though. I'm really looking forward to the VW T7. And what you guys are going to do with it. Looks like you already having everything planned. 😁 I do pray they dont have the wet belt engine as that is such a poor design, the main issue with those is that the belts deterioate and causes a blockage in the brake vacuum, which then causes complete brake failure. This happens even when regular servicing is done, too. Let's hope it's not one of these. 🤞

Ummm I don’t think so my 66 plate custom is on 238k original engine,clutch and gearbox, regular servicing is a must

I feel they must have addressed this, right? 🙏
@liam...89610 ай бұрын
You must be a lucky one. I have 5 custom euro 6 vans on the road, and this has happened to 4 of them. All been regular serviced. The one that it hasn't happened to mainly stays in the yard as a backup van. One has had to have a brand new engine from Ford too. This was due to injector failure, which starved the engine. Causing internal damage. I was hoping these would not have these engines. Looks like I will be buying t6 and t6.1 next second hand.

This was the 1 transporter I was really hoping to be a game changer for VW… especially as this would likely be my next purchase! But why couldn’t this have been a VW platform that Ford have benefitted from but instead we get a Ford platform with VW tweaks.. As a VW fan of the brand it has to be the biggest mistake?? As well as a Transit drives etc etc just wonder how much better if it was a Transporter platform 😢 definitely lost its heritage…

I’ve had many MANY different vans over the years. Vivaro, dispatch, transporter (current van t6), Vito etc etc……the transit custom is the only one that still gives me nightmares. The most awful, problematic and costly out of the lot by a mile. EGR issues, head gasket went, injector went (you have to replace all of them, you can’t just replace the one) plus a multitude of other problems from steering to brakes. It died a death at 60,000 miles and I vowed never to dabble with ford again. And the garage was always very busy with other repairs, ever a good sign. Headache after headache that thing. Money pit. This really is a shame to see.
@marks-0-010 ай бұрын
I'm staying open minded for now but the VW does seem to have a better looking front end. What i do wonder is with the VW being made in the Ford facfory will it actually made by Ford workers or will VW have their own people on the line.

So the new J74 (T7) is to be built on the Ford Otosan Kocaeli production line in Turkey using the same platform transmission and recently developed (2017) Panther Diesel engine as the V710 Transit custom. Same supply base as the Transit Custom. I had a t5.1 for 5 years and a mate had the same vintage Transit custom- guess what - Transit was a much nicer van to use - more comfortable seats, better ride quality etc. I work in the Automotive industry and whilst I bought a new T5.1 to build my Camper on, it truly isn’t worth the extra money. All the VW fans who blindly follow the badge should know that VW employ the Dutch auction approach to their suppliers when sourcing components- they are as tight as it gets! 😂 maybe the T7 will mirror the Transits pricing ! I doubt it!

O joy swapped out my 60th anniversary transporter for a msrt transit in 2020 worst mistake of my motoring life. For the reason of the ford van drives better in my opinion as you stated but the front bumper sticks out to far from the front wheel and causes the front splitter lip spoiler to remove its self on a regular bases I went through 3 in 8 month just left it off after that then start to hit the bumper I do live in Devon and travel around Cornwall alot the roads are a but ruffer

Can’t wait for my custom to arrive next week, I’m sure it’s going to be an improvement on previous models, I’ve decided to use one instead of my Range Rover as the daily driver and I found it so nice to navigate around some of the narrow streets nearby, I’ve got a feeling that I may spend a lot more time in it than previous vans.
