NEW Volume Meter for Ableton Live in TouchOSC (Ultimate Guide to TouchOSC)

I'm excited to share another collaboration I worked on. This time with Kirkwood West, we made a terrific meter for showing volume in your TouchOSC template. This video shows how you can integrate this with Ableton, but you can also set this up with any DAW that will allow you to send OSC information.

TouchOSC is a MIDI control surface for your old iPad, tablet, or phone to work with your DAW and other software. We are using the latest version of TouchOSC, Mk2. Hexler (hexler.net/tou...) came out with the 2nd version (Mk 2) of TouchOSC in the summer of 2021.

Hey Tim. Really appreciate your videos. Forgive my ignorance as I’m newer to TouchOSC. As far as putting the information into your M4L device, for the IP address, that’s the iPad’s (in my case) IP Address correct? As for the port number, I have no idea what to put there. I’ve tried researching to find it. I’m using TouchOSC bridge to connect if that matters. How do I find the port number?

Yes! Use your mobile device port number. The port number just needs to be the same in TouchOSC on the mobile device as it is in M4L. Start with 9000 send, 8000 receive on your iPad (it will be the reverse on the computer).

Hi Tim. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I'm learning a lot. You know that I'd like to make a "pitch bend" fader to transpose audio at any value I want (let's say) and after touching the bottom the value should automatically go back to a default "transport 0 st" how would you do it? once again. thanks a lot!

Were you thinking about using a MIDI CC that's paired to a DAW? One thing you could do instead is using a MIDI message, change the "type" in the control panel to I think it's actually called Pitch Bend. Does that work?

Good question! Ya I can build a M4L patch for that. It's similar to stuff in the other video on Ableton. I don't remember if I covered that or not 🤷😆, but I can!

Can anyone guide me on how I can resize the meter? I tried it but it cuts-off the internal meter controls because they don't scale with the group. BTW much thanks for the template. It works great!

In Ableton, when Link is enabled and connected to something, the arrangement position box becomes highlighted with an animated progress bar representing the quantization clock. Is it possible to create a similar visual in TouchOSC for Ableton?

So I've seen some other templates around where people set up an object in Touch OSC that acts like a progress bar using a script. I haven't had the time to set that up, but I Believe it's possible from what other's have done. Try checking the forums.
