Hey Bruce! Sounds like a cool project! I haven't tried using the app to control a pedal, but I know others have. So the app on an iPad will function on its own, it does not need the desktop version to function. The only other software you would need on a desktop is the Bridge (which is free), if you were sending signals through that method. The desktop version is really just a larger editor to build templates with. Hope this helps!

At 9:45, you say, "You can turn this on as well if you need to." So it's optional? When would you need to use it? And if I use the send port 8000 and the receive port 9000, do I need to port forward in my router's admin page? Would I be port forwarding the IP of my controller (iPhone) rather than my computer? I can't figure out how to get this to work. I guess I should look at the manual.

If you're trying to send two different signals with one button in TouchOSC, the answer is yes. You can set up and choose which connections your tablet device is sending to. So you'd have to set up the different receive ports in your connections and then make sure both connections are enabled in your object that is sending the signal.

Hey Tim! Really appreciate your videos. I have a simple question that I'm sure is in one of your tutorials but I can't find any documentation myself. Is there a way to use a wired connection to connect your Desktop TouchOSC to your iPad TouchOSC so you can create the template on your computer and demo on the iPad? I have seen you set this up with a wifi connection, but I wasn't sure if it was possible to keep the connections wired. Thanks Tim!
@TimCorpus
@TimCorpus Жыл бұрын
Ya both are doable. I use wired most of the time with USB (for battery purposes). Once it's plugged in you can set that in your links to connect just like you would with WiFi. Then in the desktop editor just select enable server from the little Wi-Fi button at the top of the editor, then connect to it from the mobile device. Hope that helps!

Hi Tim. Question. I set uo my wifi instances at home and then traveled to a hotel. It still had my home ip address, which required me to browse and get a new one. also, the FW blocked any client server connections. (I assume). So, I'm assuming that ti use this in a band setting at a locality that it requires USB connection? thanks
@TimCorpus
@TimCorpus Жыл бұрын
Ya, firewalls can be a tough situation. If you're using a tablet with a computer, I think a USB cable is more reliable, especially in venues without specific artist-use connections. However, if you are going to use WiFi you can just run a "what is my IP" search and reset the port connections each time. Also if you're using keystroke messages over WiFi, you'll need the Bridge. Hope that helps!

hey tim, you have a wonderful channel and great series on the TouchOSC. i have a question though: my old iphone 6s (controller) is connected via USB to my computer, Controlling my daw via OSC Bridge works fine, i now want to start designing my own controller templates in the desktop version because its more comfortable to me than on the small iphone, but how can i transfer them once finished onto my iphone?, i have seen on your channel that you do this via the server/client mode over network, but i dont have any network on my DAW as its offline by purpose.

Thank you for doing these. I’m shocked how many of these controller app developers create great tools but their explanations are TERRIBLE or nonexistent. (and gee Hexler, thanks for making a new version, yet calling it the old version….so the old version has the name that looks like it’d be the new version….plus, now googling directions for the “new” version always brings up forums & articles for what actually is the old version). Christ what a mess 🙄 Also Hexler, if you’re reading, thanks for your online manual making every single link start with a full screen of artwork I have to scroll down past… every….single….click….. gawd.

Hahaha ya a lot of these software are not friendly to beginners, even if they are good at technology. I think the disconnect is often that this stuff is obvious to developers, but not obvious to consumers. I think Adobe has actually been pretty good about intuitive systems in their programs over the last couple years. Hexler has been really supportive of this channel which I'm really grateful for. But ya, I think there is much to cover on the beginner - intermediate level in Touch OSC because of the manual gaps. I'm learning new stuff constantly by these developers who are scripting all new apps in this.

@TimCorpus
@TimCorpus 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. So I'm mostly using the app on an old iPad air from like 2013/14. It's mostly stable for me, especially when I'm using it with Reaper or Finale. I find it works better running on its own and not using the Desktop app to run in. I use the desktop app in the tutorials just to show how everything works, but I'd recommend building on your desktop, but then running it on your tablet. The times I deal with crashes are actually while I'm filming the tutorials. For those I have the app connected to my PC, plus I'm recording screen on the iPad and computer and all. So usually I attribute those issues to pushing my old iPad too hard. I haven't tried it on Android, so I can't speak to that. I'm also building my templates for me and my work. I've used a couple of other people's heavy templates for things and maybe there were some issues in the template. Hope that helps, but for what I use it for (mostly MIDI, OSC, and Keystrokes with Reaper) it's been solid.

Another thing i was wondering: do the instruments in kontakt (in reaper)automatically accept the cc messages? Untill now non of these things work. But after having added the OSC in preferences and i clicked on "listen" and moved the slider on my ipad all the cc's came in. Thanks for your advice.
@TimCorpus
@TimCorpus 2 жыл бұрын
@@hermanverbaeten5894 If you want to use OSC signals, yes you need to have that on in the settings. If you're only sending MIDI, you shouldn't need it. I use OSC signals a lot, so I have it on. Kontakt will accept MIDI learn through MIDI too. So you should be able to make an encoder in your template, give it a MIDI value, then do Learn on Kontakt.

I want to use an old ipad 2 with ableton 11(win10) I have laying around as a midi controller, just setting it to play some keys and chords like a launchpad. Is there any way to test how it will work (latency and stuff like that, i'm away from the wifi router, for example) for free? 10$ or 5$ is quite a lot of money in my country.

The editor in Mk2 is more robust. Mk1 still works, you can still send OSC messages, MIDI messages, and keystrokes, but it does have its limitations. Mk2 is just an updated version with more current options, scripting (very nice!), and even more upgrades on the way. Mk2 also has a way more user-friendly editor.

@@TimCorpus Oh, ok. I think i'll lean towards the mk1 because of the big price difference + it will probably work better on an older device, since its older software, I guess. Do i need to pay for both the windows app and the ipad app?
@TimCorpus
@TimCorpus 2 жыл бұрын
@@schwipsy Paying for the app gets the editor and software on the app (needed), the desktop version is the desktop editor. The desktop also has a free trial. I personally recommend the Mk2, but I understand your concern. In case it matters, I use an old iPad air Gen 2.

@@TimCorpus yeah its just that 10 bucks its like... About a days worth of work wage-wise(without our 65% tax, so i actually pay 16.5usd) so its expensive. Keep in mind, i dont make any money out of this, its a hobby. So i can pay the mk1 and download the bridge and it will work? I tried downloading the pc version but it asked me to buy it for like 17usd.

Hi! I can control Kontakt with Touchosc, but when I press a fader (or button) in Kontak on PC, the control does not change in Touchosc. How do I integrate this so that when I move a knob or fader on PC it also moves on Touchosc?
@TimCorpus
@TimCorpus Жыл бұрын
Did you pair the two via MIDI learn or is it a pre-designated MIDI CC? First suggestion is to check the receive MIDI port information on the tablet device. Sometimes there can be issues with certain software where it's receiving MIDI changes but it isn't set to send anything.

@@TimCorpus I configured Kontakt midi output to send midi signal to touchosc. However, it didn't work. Some people told me that Kontakt doesn't send midi signal, it only receives it. but, if not, why is there a midi output and why does touchosc appear there with the option to enable? Thanks!

Only problem is when I try to connect with my iPad (PC as host, iPad as client) it just buffers forever like there's something blocking the connection. I've looked at my firewall settings but nothing pops out at me. Any ideas?

Which part buffers? Is it when you're trying to connect the two devices between the desktop editor and the app itself? Or is it having trouble loading at a different point?

Hello, thanks for making those tutorials! how do i connect to Ableton, when my WindowsDesktop IS the touchscreen? (Dell XPS Touchscreen Laptop) I just click on "view -> toggle editor" and it should do the job? Do you know the app Touchable Pro? I only know it via KZbin, i didnt buy it (TouchablePro seems to be abandonded by its devs, so i dont even know if it would work on Windows11). I would really want to know if Touch OSC can be edited to have smilar features: TouchablePro shows Ableton Clips in a way i really like = you see the name of the clip which was given in Ableton, and you see the progress-bar of the Clip via a darker color filling up the Clip like a clock... really nice visual feedback, important when live-looping. You think that is possible to do? Also, i m missing some sort of a forum-link on the hexler webpage, is there one?

Hey! Glad the tutorials are helpful. So I've encountered difficulty for people running TouchOSC from the desktop via touchscreen. What usually happens is when someone touches the template, let's say the fader, the desktop is now focused on TouchOSC and not the DAW, so the signals aren't sent to the DAW because it's not focused on. If there is a way around this, let me know because I haven't found one yet.

@@TimCorpus woooow, thank god i didn't invest much time into programming touchOSC yet :D I m at a point now where i ll try to stop thinking about touch-controls troubleshooting and focus on making music with controllers again. @@TimCorpus Hello, i even found two ways! OSC/Pilot is working fine. The link in the description of this video helped me: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYSVhZ9oep2Fgc0 -> It says "loopMIDI (if touch control and DAW are on same computer)". So after installing LoopMidi, OSC/Pilot worked fine together with Ableton. It's very similar to TouchOSC, concerning its interface/Button/Faders etc. Still, i was still searching for a interface which automatically shows the labels/names of Clips and Tracks given in Ableton. So i tried Touchable Pro. Out of the box, it won't work with Ableton + Interface running on the same machine (Ableton 11+DellXPS9710 here). But i found a forum thread about it community.zerodebug.com/t/windows-ableton-and-touchable-on-same-machine/2857 -> now it works. It's such a pleasant experience, wow! NO comparison to other OSCs, because you instantly have a fully sized Launchpad with Tracknames, Clipnames, and you even see the Clips-Playing-Progress, better than in Ableton itself. At first i was hesitant to spend the money on TouchablePRo, cause the developers dont seem to be active any more in the forum, which i always hate - but as long as it works, i m fine haha.

Ok, so what is your setup in the MIDI message section of the TouchOSC template? You should be able to specify the MIDI channel (I think I talk about that around 10:41 in that video). If you have any OSC messages, remove those. Do you have Protokol installed? kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZjbpWembNGZp5o If so, can you tell me what messages it receives when you push the button?

@@CanNainggolan Ah, ok. So assuming you have the MIDI message made in your button as well as an OSC message. Check in Reaper>Options>Preferences>MIDI Devices. Make sure your item is added to the top area. You should see something like "TouchOSC Bridge" as a device option. Double click it and make sure you have Enable input and enable for control checked. Let me know if that helps.

You obviously recorded this on what seems like at least a 2k screen, then shrunk it down to fit the iPad screen next to it, _then_ re-encoded it to 1080. Not smart. The controls, especially in the document tree, are *TINY*. Expanding it to full on my 2k monitor they're not only tiny but blurry as well. Please consider setting the monitor you record from to 1920 x 1080. Or, obviously, just get a '1k' screen to do your KZbin demos on. I keep having to lean in to less than a foot from the screen to see what you're doing!
