Yes!!! I've just got a 2023 VW Passat (as a company vehicle) and oh my god, the led head lights are unbelievably bright. And to adjust the range setting of them I have to go into about 5 settings menus! It infuriates me, why not just have a dial next to the headlight switch like everything else 😂

Several reviews popped up on my notifications this morning, I must admit to watching a couple of the shorter ones, might have well saved mytime and gone straight to this one. As for the speed, I guess there will be a spate to sales for aftermarket HUD's, but saying that will have to test drive to see if it's a problem, after all never was on my classic mini.

I love that Volvo has finally brought out something that gives V40 owners somewhere to go within the brand. Premium, compact, but at a competitive price. Love the looks, packaging and performance but I’m not sure how I’d get on without an instrument cluster. Will be test driving one as soon as I can though.

Before that, they binned the V50 too. A compact sized estate car, wildly popular on our roads. It got "replaced" by the smaller hatchback V40 (which is not worthy of the "V" imho, as it's a hatchback) and the larger, more expensive V60. They make some strange decisions sometimes

Great video! I really like the car, but... The lack of central speedo (and maybe cruise speed indication) and the lack of physical buttons for basic functions (you can't find them without looking for them) are a definite issue for me and many others I think on many newer cars. The best controls I ever had for HVAC were on my Mk 1 Volvo S80. The designers of the controls in that car must be wondering what the hell happened since then. I understand cost-cutting, but looking away and refocussing to navigate a large screen (which obviously lacks tactile reference points) is not my idea of a relaxed drive and certainly has some impact on safety.

I always enjoy how detailed your reviews are; noticing the little things is important. The lack of a speedometer in front of the driver and the lack of dedicated switch gear for climate controls etc, doesn't feel like Volvo ethos to me. Even the shiny black plastic buttons on the steering wheel (haptic feedback) seems like a misstep. Everything the driver uses while driving shouldn't detract from their attention on the road. It's impossible to perform tasks by muscle memory when the menu system on the centre stack changes depending on what mode it's in.

Architecture is not shared with the Lotus Eletre - that uses an 800V Lotus Electric Premium Architecture, whereas the EX30 and Smart use the Geely SSP platform, which is 400V (source: Lotus engineer at Hampton Court Concours). Really like your reviews. I agree with your understanding on how cars should be. Love this car and the reasons behind the way it is. It really makes me appreciate the Hyundai/Kia group and validates their views on electrical cars. This car is basically Volvo's take on the Kona/E-Niro that were lauched 5/6 years ago. Same exterior size, similar size battery and comparable prices just done in a different way for different target buyers. Really hope Volvo does a C30 style eletric car with 300 miles range their way for those of us who don't like or want somekind of SUV style car.

Johnny absolutely on the money. This ticks a lot of boxes which other manufacturers have overlooked or avoided. Small tweaks such as a speedo in front of the driver would be a welcome change, it's just more intuitive and ergonomic. Small wins such as the electric window switches on the centre console make perfect sense, my 206 had them! It's a shorter wiring loom, you don't have to branch out cables to the doors, and the hand you would ordinarily use to adjust things within the cabin (such as temperature gears etc) is utilised. Makes perfect sense. There's a lot going for this car.

I'm surprised no one else has done this with an EV. They've utilized cost-cutting where it makes sense and done so beautifully it seems. Also, this will be made in China but they also announced recently that due to the good reception of the car, they will bring production to Ghent, Belgium as well because they think these will sell very well, might even become their new best seller once the petrol XC40 leaves the lineup.

Another great review, Johnny. I particularly enjoyed hearing comments from the car's designers. In that regard, had you spoken to a safety engineer I expect you would have learned why the front of the car is as long as it is. Two things I found missing (or just missed): how strong is the regenerative braking (and whether it is adjustable), and your take on its lane-keeping and adaptive cruise capabilities. Regarding the lack of a driver's display, I don't think it would bother me in the least, considering that the current speed is displayed in a rather large font in the top-left of the centre display.

You're 100 percent correct on that one, same with the electric windows being in the middle too. But that's also to save putting long expensive and easy to fail, but hard to get to wiring looms in the doors like cars of old. Before if your windows failed you had to pretty much dismantle the entire door and surrounding parts, with this you just lift out the centre panel. The only thing in the doors is the motors for the windows and a lock and nothing else.

On the speedo in the centre stack thing, I have a C4 Picasso with the big centre screen and it really isn't something that's annoyed me (despite coming from more traditional cars with ordinary gauge clusters behind the steering wheel). Brilliant car. I'm glad manufacturers are finally getting the message and delivering sensibly-priced EVs with a decent range. That's precisely the kind of vehicle that will push EV adoption forward. By the way, loved the video also because I lived in Barcelona for five years. I've recognised the scenic road that goes from Barcelona to Sitges, and I remembered how much I enjoyed driving on it with my MX5!

It's a superb piece of design - still full of Scandi chic despite the price point and Chinese influence. However: I'm with you and all the other commentators about the touch screen and the lack of "in front" dash display. I love the windscreen head-up display of my XC60 - and would quite happily trade a dash-mounted cluster for the centre screen PLUS a good H/U display. But without either? I'm not so sure. And I think touchscreen-mounted controls should, by law, be confined to ONLY those not required when driving.

Heard Volvo say that front of the car was too short for HUD. But for me: lack of it or a small display in front of the wheel + only two window buttons + a little bit too little backseat space is a deal breaker

It's quite similar to the Renault Megane E-tech, looks bigger and chunkier than it actually is, and the Megane also has that all important Allegro-esque steering wheel.😁 Looks like this will be a hit for Volvo and as always another great review Jonny 👏🏻👍🏻

I've wondered about that too. I have a Volvo C40, which is a rocket, but I never approach it's limits. My guess is that Volvo figures that switching to smaller motors would not significantly reduce its costs or the size of the battery needed to keep the same range, so they may as well keep it as is to pick up the performance-minded as well as its primary market, commuters and errand-runners. But as I say, just a guess.

This is a great example of how a highly logical company like Volvo are targeting a highly illogical market with people wanting SUVs etc. not sure about those frameless mirrors though - you could knock a house down with the mirrors on my old 850 and they’d still work afterwards! Well done Volvo, a non SUV, excellent. A high riding family hatch with a practical square boot entrance, at a 'good price' and clever, dare I say, sensible design. The german manufacturers are missing a trick with their heavy, overpriced, large and inefficient EV's. Glad to see Volvo have kept indicator stalks for safety reasons presumably, but a heads up speedo would have been nice, but actually, moving your eyes to the left/right slightly as opposed to down, isn't a big issue really. Really good thorough review Jonny, other youtubers take note.

If I was going to change my i3S this would be top of the list … I always enjoy your way of explaining things and your enthusiasm- agree with you on the speedo . My dad has just bought one of these so I’ll be trying one out at least as a passenger soon. However many of the things you’ve said make me even more keen to keep hold of my i3S - it’s one of the 2022 run special editions, coming up to end of PCP and I’m intending to pay the balloon though many will think I’m crazy to do so! Many things you mention regarding the Volvo makes me realise how far ahead of the game BMW were 10 years ago with the i3!! I just hope more manufacturers come up with smaller, well thought out bespoke EVs like this now.

Appreciate your candid comments. I share most of your likes and a few of your criticisms. You left out the cell phone pocket in the seat back pockets of the front seats. Unless Volvo have decided to bin that idea. Also, weren't there some small storage cups between the ends of the rear seat cushion and the door cards? Overall design is very good, but as you mentioned, they could move the passenger cabin forward and shrink the front end. Maybe make it have a lower cd by lowering the front facia or using the front wing a la Polestar.
