I bought a P22 to teach my girlfriend and her mom how to shoot. This is a nice video to learn a little more about the gun. I’m taking her to the range for the first time tomorrow. I took it out once by myself. It shoots straight and is very easy to handle. It’s sort of like shooting a pellet gun.

I love my PPQ 5” in 22LR. Ridiculously accurate, and more so than my wife’s Ruger SR22 at lease in my hands, but both are great firearms. Great to train with the PPQ since I shoot the Q5 Match (polymer) and my home defense is a PPQ 45 ACP. Kudos to Walther for more options. Great review, Sootch. Honest, informative and entertaining. I just got this as my first firearm! While I would have liked a bigger caliber, I chose this as it is quiet enough to use without bothering my neighbors too too much (they still complain during longer shooting sessions more than an hour). This gun is very picky in terms of ammo, but like you I use CCI Minimag and it works flawlessly. I also keep CCI Stinger rounds specifically for if I ever need this gun for anything more than target practice, as it travels much much faster. This gun is absolutely perfect for practice as well as first time shooting (such as my girlfriend, who I am teaching). Outside of practice, I wouldn't recommend it for much. Its a very small, lightweight gun that I would consider perfect for new shooters, smaller women and children. If you're in the market for a .22lr handgun, I highly recommend this!

The changes came gradually over time, instead of all at once (as in a new generation or "gen 2"). The one reviewed here is called the P22Q which was released in 2011 SHOT Show. P22Q changes are mostly cosmetic, such as PPQ style slide and grip. Also the internal lock was deleted, and the rail became multi-sloted. P22QD was released in 2017, with Beretta 92 style decocker/safety combo, and captured recoil spring/guide rod. The CA version has no barrel nut, so the barrel is not threaded :)

The captive recoil spring is the key. I had the original and where the malfunctions occurred was with subsonic ammo. I sold it for that reason and then got the P22 qd. It feeds all of the subs I’ve put through it with no problem. So, if you are or were discouraged with your old P22 make the switch and you won’t regret it. I am not sure, but you may be able to simply put the new recoil spring in it.
@johnjohnson34473 жыл бұрын
When did Walther make the change to the captive recoil spring?
@gunmonkey65453 жыл бұрын
I am not sure of the date but the Q series have the captured recoil spring. The confusion is that the grip texture changed before the spring so from the outside, they look identical. The P22Q and P22QD both have the captured spring. QD represents the version that has the safety decocker and the Q has a regular safety. Hope this helps.

that little trigger guard-mounted paddle release is my favorite kind, honestly, because I usually have to break my grip to hit the more common variety. Nice gun and it's accurate. My daughter loves shooting it so much I had to get her one also. The target barrel is worth having for the longer sight radius. Is an easy swap. It's a very simple gun to suppress, and the action seems to be unaffected. The captive recoil spring makes it much easier to reassemble. After market ones are available for "Gen 1s", but perhaps the Walther G2 springs would also work? I wish they'd make a higher capacity mag, I'm sure they could if they choose to. I upgraded my extractor, that seemed to help when the round count got up there, especially when shooting suppressed. The factory sights are just tall enough to use with lower profile suppressors. Ironically, the Walther rim fire suppressor has protrusions on it that interfere with the sights. Keep that in mind when selecting a can for rimfire. Fobus makes an inexpensive holster for it, but the holsters I have almost have too much rentention. I added red paint to the proper dimple on the saftey on the gen 1s. I'm not sure how they over looked that little detail on the first ones.

I have two P-22s. One short barrel and one long barrel. The long barrel P-22 is still new in the box. Purchased both of them back in 2001. After firing the short barrel model and breaking it down to clean afterwards I discovered the slide grooves were chewed up a bit. I mailed it to S&W and received it back a week later with a note saying it was normal wear. They lied! Later the safety lever began to drop down on safety and the problem became more frequent soon after. I wanted to throw it into the sea afterward I was so upset. Instead I put it away and had forgotten about it. Someday I'll buy a new complete slide. The one I have now was most likely a defect from the beginning I believe. As for the P-22s performance I do like it and Remington golden bullets work fine.

My p22 is about 8 years old or so, gen 2 frame but without a captured guide rod. It’s also a steaming hot pile of shit unless you either run mini mags or thunderbolts. Any other loads and it essentially turns it into a straight pull. Also doesn’t have enough spring tension to chamber the first round of a full magazine so you have to thumb press it. I sincerely wish they would upscale it to a 9mm because I do love everything about it function and feel wise

For those of you who say a 22 isn’t suitable for self defense, I refer you to 0:33 low recoil, means easier to stay on target. Not so loud to blow year ears out. 3 inches of penetration is all that’s needed to incapacitate/kill

The lack of power in a rimfire round is not necessarily the issue, it’s the much higher probability that it won’t go “bang“ when you pull the trigger… Rimfire is much more likely to malfunction than centerfire.

After going between the choices based on a lot of rental range guns - all the brands - I bought the M&P .22 Compact a couple years ago. We now live in a world where manufacturing has become both precise and rather inexpensive - especially in the plastic gun field. You really can't get a dud gun anymore. If so, it's an anomaly, rather than a brand issue. As to why I went with the M&P? Basically, two reasons: 1) I already have the M&P platform in 9mm, so grip ergo and handling are the same, and 2) the M&P was under the glass when I had the money. I haven't been disappointed yet after at least 4000 rounds. Any issues have been ammo related. In my extended tests at the range, all these guns are somewhat ammo sensitive. It's not the guns - it's the mass produced .22 ammo, with my best experience being with CCI Mini-Mags or Stingers. They just seem to have way less squibs.

We are extremely disappointed with the function of this little pistol, especially considering that I bought this pistol based on the Walther reputation. The problem with this pistol is that it repeatedly has "Failure to Eject." Approximately one out of 20 rounds there is a failure to eject. I cycled the slide by hand several times, but the spent round would still not eject. I had to pry the round by the edge of the rim to remove the spent shell. My son was shooting alongside my wife with a Ruger 22/45 and the Ruger experience zero malfunctions with the same ammunition CCI .22LR 36gr. I'm guessing the extractor is not good. 8:17 I'm in the market for this type gun, but that height adjustable front sight took me right out of the hunt. For the most part windage is only required for a target gun and windy conditions. Elevation changes are based on load and bullet weight in addition to distance. Some rinky-dink plastic front sight insert for elevation change is a joke in my opinion. I am looking for a compact/subcompact pocket carry type pistol in 22 caliber for practice purposes. Something that mimics a pistol in the P365/hellcat or RM 380 class pistol. It's all converging on the Ruger SR 22. I'm lucky I stocked up on 22 when the price was low. Now I just need the right firearm to use for practice mimicking my carry firearms. Good review. I have two of the original P-22's and they are both great shooters. Now with the PPQ texturing and the captured spring I'll have to get a new one once they're back in stock.

Thanks for the video, just what I needed. I really like these but I never bought one due to the issues when they first came out. I think I will get one to teach my girls.

I had some issues with cycling. Put a captive recoil spring and runs great. And way easier to take down and reassemble. Believe recoil spring was from Tandem Cross.

walther’s p22 gen1’s teething troubles led me happily to the ruger sr22. i do admit that i prefer how the p22 feels in my hand. that said the sr22 is the one reliable, handy, forever 22lr plinker to have.

I had one of the original P22's that I got for my wife. Nice little handgun. But I have the same problem as you. A son that like it so much, it became his handgun. Maybe I'll get the newer version to check out. I'm surprised they left the magazine release lever and didn't go with the more popular button.

Tx22 all day. Functions with every ammo, more capacity, better trigger, striker fired, threaded barrel. No reason to get this when the tx22 exists.

Great video you mentioned the barrel but could have easily demonstrated how for 30 bucks you could add a threaded attachment on the barrel since it is designed that way for a silencer with a $ 200 ATF stamp and the price of the silencer cost more than the gun alone. I have a compensator on mine thanks to the Walther barrel design and the added weight keeps the front down for more accurate shots.Aplus video and thank you!!!! $30 plus $30 for compensator from TandemKross I have 250.00 new plus $60 more Walther p22Q is perfect for only $310.00!!!! minimum 1000 rounds and still going

There are some things you can do to help it cycle better. I think its a gamble if yours will have some of the known issues. I wouldn't use it for carry/SD. It's a plinker for me.
@Billfish575 жыл бұрын
The biggest improvement you can make to the older model, is change to the captured spring it fixes two problems for about 20 bucks. It will make failures to feed history and make it way easier to put back together when cleaning, so you'll clean it more often too. Stay with the right ammo, I use the CCI standard but I would buy the plated bullets once my current ammo is gone. The .22 rounds are dirty ammo so going with the plated bullets helps keep the gun clean, so less problems and easier to clean. Dropping the hammer when the safety is on has no effect on the gun because a hammer block prevent the hammer from hitting anything but the steel safety block, that's good for dry firing, otherwise never dry fryer a .22 without fake plastic shells in there. GET THE CAPTURED SPRING!!! It is a game changer as they say.
@eksemos2 жыл бұрын
So the captured spring is part of/automatically included with the latest iteration of the P22, the "Q", right?
