I was sad we hadn’t had a new video in awhile. I’m at peak “when is soccer season ever going to GET here” mode right now. So being able to learn something is great! 😂

good stuff, thanks. i played my U10 girls in a 4-3-1 at the one 9v9 tournament we entered last fall, and i found then that the middle of the field was a bit congested in offense -- for this reason and a few others, i'm considering trying a 4-2-2 this season playing a single CAM with two forwards. i'd laid out the same pressing rotation when i played around with the magnet board, so i'm glad to hear others are thinking through a similar solution.

Instead of trying to force their defender to play out wide to the winger, it is often of more value to close down hard on the options on the side so that they are tempted to play out via the middle in front of their own goal. As soon as they do (instantly) the team without the ball puts maximum pressure on the midfielder recieving the ball in order to win the ball high on the field and with the shortest (and more direct) distance to the goal!

Coach Rory, Last year I started watching your vids coaching my U10 rec league team and your 7v7 breakout vids helped get my team organized and the improvement was awesome. It gave me the spirit to volunteer to coach our U10 boys rec select team, and your concepts were great and we did very well in our SE PA tournament season...These were all kids that didnt make a travel team for whatever reason, but using your videos I was able to get these boys to improve greatly and this year all of the boys I coached that tried out for Travel ball all made teams (across 3 different clubs) including my son. I just found out that your team will be at my sons club's season opening tournament next month. I would love to shake your hand and thank you personally for your help.

Another great video, coach. I like the 2 man press as a change up to counter teams that get a little too adept defeating the 1 man press by creating an overload using the 6 or 5 to the center.

Yeah it definitely gives a different look and applies more pressure. My issue is I run into so many boot it ball teams that I don't know how much I will be able to do it.

Will do! Easy how? Like in build up, poor defending? At u10 for example if they are trying to build out and making the right decisions etc I'm ok giving up "easy goals".

Initially I felt your 4-3-1 was a bit excessive from a defensive standpoint, especially to develop players in a 9v9 game, but when I saw it laid out, it’s ALMOST slight variation of my preferred formation at this age, which I would encourage instead of a 4-3-1. I think a 2-3-3 would be a great formation to try, and if you wanted to press the box, you have 3 forwards you can use to do so when the opposing team performs goal kicks. I think giving the 2-3-3 at the 9v9 level a chance is a great way to develop players at the 9v9 age.

Understood. In terms of pressing at 9v9 I have come around to the idea of pressing with two up top. So the shape pressing becomes almost a 4-2-2. Or a 2-4-2. I have a video on it. Really the shape is less of an issue as long as your developing a system and patterns of play etc.

Thanks for your content Rory. Slightly of topic question for you. When do you start to correct passing and striking techniques (kicking in general) in youth players?
@tonicox4005
@tonicox4005 11 ай бұрын
Coach may have a different perspective. I think very early on you encourage players to use all parts of both feet. I think by U7 they can start to understand what part of the foot to get a powerful shot. Then depending on the player U8 or U9 with players who have that foundation, you can hone in on showing where to strike the ball, the follow through, what part to use to pass for different types, etc. It takes a lot of working on it in practices before many players implement in games except for the sponge kids. Sponge kids are great! Again it depends on the player and team as a whole and their previous experience. I this spring had a team of U6 and one U5 player on it. They were basically all sponge kids and so smart and logical. Very little bumble bee ball with them. The U5 player is quite advanced. He was craving more from practices and he already has some pretty good moves to get around defenders, so we started working on his shot. Such a fun team to coach!

@@tonicox4005 Thanks for your input, I have been getting push back from the some parents who think their kids are to young at U8.
@tonicox4005
@tonicox4005 11 ай бұрын
@@jporter5268 That’s unfortunate. As long as you are not putting undue pressure on them to implement it every time in games, there should be no issue. Why would they want that to be on coaches at higher age levels to then undo all the bad habits formed? It drives me nuts when I get a team of U12 rec players who don’t have a grasp of the basics of how to kick, positions, or knowing basic terms like the 18. I say start teaching them young. Again with different expectations for different players. In comparison to that U6 team, my U7 team this year was boys who were overall new to soccer and not at all comfortable with the ball. And in a perplexing way didn’t go to the ball. Did the opposite of bumble bees. 😂 Did we practice technique in practices? Yep! But in the game I celebrated if we didn’t stop after kicking it once and kept going up the field. That’s weird about the parents. I’ve never had any say I was teaching something that wasn’t age appropriate, usually just the opposite that they want me to push a team that isn’t ready yet (it’s a rec and rec+ league only) in certain areas.
