Cheapaudioman, sorry you were a bit confused by the sensitivity specifications. Traditionally speaker sensitivity is measured at 1kHz and that's what goes into the specifications. However we judge sensitivity by ear over a wide range where the ear is highly sensitive from around 800Hz - 5kHz and the Super Linton offers up to 2dB extra power in the room here. So that's why they sound a tad louder. You're right about running the speakers in. If you love Super Linton now you're going to be amazed how they're going to develop after a few more weeks of use. I'm so pleased you expressed the difference between the Linton 85 and Super Linton so well and that you love playing music on both of them which, after all, is what hi-fi should all be about.

I have the 85th anniversary Lintons attached to a Wilsenton R8 and the realism is incredible. If you close your eyes you would think you were center stage. Price wise I don’t think you can get a better set of speakers to work with tube amps. The efficiency of these speakers makes it possible to get theater or an intimate club sound right in your living room. Put about 100 hours on them and they really explode with the range they were designed for. Would love to move up to the super Lintons but I don’t have the room for another set of speakers. That’s the problem with the hobby. You have to have room for all that electronic candy.
@renatomorais81362 ай бұрын
The woofer is the same but with a more powerful motor. I think it's the same deal with the midrange and there's absorbing material in its rear chamber, chamber that already existed on the original one. Cabinets are built differently too and there's two crossovers with better materials instead of one in the original. Plus the new tweeter that you've mentioned.

The super linton's bass has an extended bass shelf design which means you can and should put them closer to the wall. The regular Linton has normal bass extension and that is why it gets boomy if put closer to the wall.
@TriAmpMyFi2 ай бұрын
. Where are you seeing the frequency response charts & crossover order specs for the shelf? I don't see any Thiele specs for driver extension either Acid Jazz, Funk & Brass 🔈🔉🔊
@wyup2 ай бұрын
You shouldn't put a speaker close to the wall to get more bass, I think it's a trade-off cause you can get resonances. A speaker should be designed to provide bass by itself and be put into the room for optimal response. Something may be wrong with this speaker when two reviewers say it has less bass.

I think Wharfedale recognized the reputation and long term popularity of the Linton. And took the opportunity to use that to take it to another profit level. Works for me as it moves them out of the "I'd like to own those someday" category. Not that i wouldn't spend that money, but at 65 I doubt I hear the difference you do. I just popped for Elac floor model DB6.2 for $750 pair that are playing in the background breaking in. With sub, i doubt much is going to sound better enough to matter to me. :) I like this place in my musical journey.

I disagree. The Lintons are super easy to run, no matter the equipment.
@paulhanlon511226 күн бұрын
@Schlock3000 Easy to drive is one thing, but getting them to open up to their full sonic signature is another thing completely, the Linton as well as the Denton need and should have Amplifiers with plenty of sizzle and Drive, they will poke along with amps of 30/50 RMS but 80/100 RMS and beyond is where their true sonic abilities are revealed !
@wardprocter23712 ай бұрын
Did you compare the two using any other sources? Seems like using the a10 with class A bias and loudness turned on might be colouring the sound compared to a class D or even a neutral class AB amp. I’m running my 85s off an NAD 3050 and I don’t seem to missing out on anything in the upper midrange and treble.

👍Good review, Randy ! Options are good. I like speakers with different "personalities" also. Painful to have just one set. Need to have at least one full range set that's very revealing for stereo and another set for stereo that's warm and forgiving when running less than perfect source material. And then there's HT, small rooms and near field monitoring. It never ends lol ..and then there's monitors and headphones, etc. 😂😂

Randy, are you shorting out the speakers next to the ones you’re listening to? If not, the one that’s not playing will act like a bass trap and absorb certain frequencies from the one playing. This would be especially important with two large cabinets placed close together like this… they’re acoustically coupled with one resonating out of phase with the other. Could be one reason the Super sounds a bit leaner down low, especially if it’s tuned lower than the 85 beside it.

If the sensitivity is the same, perhaps there's an efficiency difference between the two sets of drivers? "Speaker efficiency" refers to the percentage of electrical power that is converted into sound by a speaker, while "speaker sensitivity" is a measurement of how loud a speaker will play at a specific distance with a given amount of power input. This may explain the "loudness" difference.
@shipsahoy17932 ай бұрын
The supers are slightly louder in the midrange and treble area for the same input stimuli, hence are slightly louder..

how does this compare to KLH Model 5?
@jeremyelliott98312 ай бұрын
Compared to KLH model 5? Do thesupers fill in that mid base and low mid missing from them? How does the imaging compare? EDIT: I got these today. Definitely better than the standard lintion. Much more presence, More/ better highs without the distortion. noticably lower bass and a bit tighter. NOT muddy anymore at all. Good enough for me to keep them, and I knew it right away. The Standard linton and KLH 5, I listend endlessly for 2 months and couldn't decide, so I sent them both back. They each had things that I just could get past. Make no mistake, these do not have ultra precise hifi imaging. but, they are pretty good enough. The model 5's have better imaging and tighter stronger bass, but they also have a huge hole at the low mid crossover and it made me nuts listening to jazz drums and voices. Model5 can also get too strident with some voices. The 85th linton jsut lounded muddy and distorted to me. The Super linton doesn't have those issues at all. Their improved bass driver is noticeable and makes the difference. I think they trade a bit of imaging for never sounding harsh. I'll take it. At this price point, this is it. Really good MidFI all rounder. Cheers!

Thanks Randy. I probably inquired about this in your “First Impressions” video, but I’ll ask again. Is there any way you could review the Wharfedale Super Denton? I’ve been intrigued by the 85th Linton since learning of them through your “Yowsa!” Review when they debuted, but I’m afraid they’re too big for my smaller living space in retirement now. The smaller three-way design of the Super Denton might be my best option. I’d love to hear your thoughts and impressions on them. Excuse me if you already reviewed them. I couldn’t find anything when I searched. Thanks for all you do for the audio community! And, I bet many others would like to hear your thoughts on the Super Denton too.

It really does come down to musical taste, and our tastes can and often do change over time and with increased experience and exposure to higher priced gear. Of the higher priced gear that I still felt had some warmth (which I like) and enough clarity, I really loved the Sonner Audio Legato Duo, a two-way floorstander (~$10k) and Gershman Acoustics (any model). I am looking for an emotional connection with the music, which for me was easier in pre-digital times with vinyl only, but now I don't want to have a record collection. So, for me I will gladly give up some transparency and clarity for a bit more forgiving and emotionally involving presentation.
@d.charlesberti90022 ай бұрын
I bought a used pair of the 85's and have really enjoyed them. The previous owner had an "upgraded" crossover put in from a man who goes by "The Crossover Chef". I never heard the originals, but these really sounded great (especially when I gave them more space). I still was itching to make an upward rather than sideways move with my speakers, so when someone offered a new-in-box pair of Revel Performa 3 F206 for a really good price, I bought them. I went back and forth but ultimately decided that I liked the Lintons better. Now I've sold the Linton 85th and am buying the Supers. I'm still trying to sell the Revels without losing my shirt! Someone asked me what I liked better about the $1,500 Lintons vs. the $3,500 Revels, and one word summed it up for me...emotion.
@johntucker59942 ай бұрын
@ I love your comment because in my experience I generally prefer speakers that are emotionally involving with no listening fatigue over speakers which are less so but are in many ways technically better (ex. better bass, better highs etc). For me I value tonality above all, and that means a special midrange. I don’t mind if the highs roll off as I detest stridency and sharpness. The very best speakers to me are able to combine warmth, excellent tonality, low distortion and a spacious soundstage with precise imaging.

Thanks for the review! How would you compare Super Linton to the Opera Prima 2015?
@geoffreydebrito26532 ай бұрын
I'm unfamiliar with the Opera line, so I visited the 2015 speaker's web page. The direct competitor of the Opera is the Paradigm Founder 40B. I suspect the Opera is a warmer speaker than the 40B. Going on specs, the 40B looks to be a much easier speaker to drive. (Nominal 8 vs 4 ohms). The Opera's minimum 3.2 Ohms makes it a bit incompatible with REGA amps as they don't match up well with very low impedance speakers. That also makes the Paradigm a more tube amp friendly speaker than the Opera. Driving the 40B with a good tube amp might give one a fine marriage of clarity and warmth.
@richardstearns6212 ай бұрын
