The Bluesound Node 130 now goes for $499 and you can get factory refurbs for around $400. The reason Bluesound may be preferable for some over WIIM is because there are a whole lot more products available from various brands, including powered speakers, built in streamers etc. by NAD, Dali, and others. They also have really great product support, IME. My wife likes the fact that all our players, including the one on the main stereo are accessed via the same app, and you can easily synchronize them. Certainly the WIIM in many cases will be an ideal choice, but for our needs, we are pretty satisfied with our Bluesound system.

Releasing another update on their existing, and highly regarded, products is a double-edged sword for hifi manufacturers: Hifi enthusiasts aren't the same as smartphone users: They don't want to get a new amp or streamer or set of speakers every few months! Plus, it potentially makes the people who just bought the previous product feel bad about their purchase. It's not good product policy, no matter how shiny the latest one is.

The Ultra doesn’t have native airplay1 which I think is absolutely necessary to supplant the Eversolo and Fiio streamers. I’d think Apple Music subscribers are holding out for hi-res lossless.

Does anyone have bit error rate data for the popular streamers? Features aside, the only difference between streamers is their ability to deliver digital music data accurately to a DAC, right? I have the Wiim mini which streams over fiber optic to my integrated. To my ear it sounds great, but the local stereo shop guys tell me there is a huge difference between the output of streamers. So where can I find that data? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Oddly enough I was planning on pulling the trigger on the WiiM amp then in one of your last videos you mentioned that “only if …..come out with new model with a display…” so I held off. Saw this and was thrilled , but then saw they ditched the amplification 😢 My plan for getting a “WiiM” was for backyard music and streaming with TV. With no amp not sure what direction to go now but would like your thoughts and this idea Get and Ultra and WiiM Amp Connect Ultra to my main “theater” setup via Monolith HTP-1 Then use the “old” WiiM amp for the outdoor setup? A WiiM Amp with a screen is rumored. Both the WiiM Amp and WiiM Amp Pro have the same functionality as the streamers built in, but the functionality is only accessible via the WiiM Home app.

I use Apple Music, so an Apple TV still beats all of these. Especially when you can have any music services as well. I use an external EQ so I split the video and audio from the Apple TV. I could add a DAC for hi res but I don’t. And still comes in nearly half the price of the WiiM.

I'm so confused about hifi now a days. I'm running my speakers through a1980s amp/preamp. It goes into a topping dac. Source is direct from cd or via laptop usb with Amazon for music. What would i use a streamer for?

The streamer will allow you to remove the laptop as a source, and enable you to stream high quality digital music from Amazon Music HD, Tidal, Roon, Qobuz, etc. I used to stream from my laptop as well until I realized just how dirty of a source a laptop can be (USB requires multiple mitigation steps to eliminate interference from the laptops power supply as well as jitter). I use Amazon Music HD and it was a game changer. I know it's not the absolute best, but it's as close to perfect as I'm willing to pay for. Enhanced clarity, microdetails, imaging and soundstaging all improved when I made the switch. I also had a 32 year old Amp and speakers that was sourced via my laptop. A started with a WiiM Mini which was great for what it does. However, I would recommend you avoid that step and buy the WiiM Pro Plus to start. The sound quality of the streamer portion is much better than the Mini, and the AKM DAC chip is something you can listen to if you don't have an external DAC already. If you later decide you want even better sound, you can power the WiiM with a linear power supply (i e., as opposed to the small wall unit it comes with), which significantly enhances the sound. There's a huge thinkg missing (already in previous units). A coaxial input. Most cheap cd transports have this digital out so i think it should be mandatory in a piece of gear like this that intends to work as a hub and at this price point. The screen isn't essential in my book. No touchscreen means less expensive and more future proof. I'd rather have mor ins and outs. (coaxial i mentioned, analog balanced, maybe i2s) Maybe in a future version! It's great as it is!

Yeah the Node is looking pretty expensive now, as is the Cambridge CXN. Still, it's the software that makes or breaks these things.

Agreed. Part of the purchase price for the hardware has to go to the continual support for their products and their server. Without that, the products turn into bricks. Plenty of streaming devices have become useless because the company went broke and the server shut down. Look at what Logitech did with Squeezebox, Grace did with their radios, and there are others. A neighbor brought over some obscure wi fi speakers that were about 8 yrs old and wanted to get them going. No server found....they were junk. The Node can easily be had for around $400 for a refurb. It's a very well built device. The WIIM looks good, but the devil is always in the details.

Room correctioin would be impressive but the specs state it has a "rear panel mic" - if it's anything like the mic on the Pro Plus for syncing audio it's going to be a big fail. They need to add the ability to add an external mic if it's going to be any good.

No balanced analog XLR outs, so not suited for a direct hook up to active speakers. ...and we know that the max wireless resolution top of the art at the moment is 24/96. XLR wired it's at least 24/192 or more depending on the manufacturer.
