First; thanks John for your continuous good quality reviews and videos. Second; sound quality. To anyone considering getting the WiiM Pro Plus and can live without a few features, don't mind two separate boxes (which are actually smaller in footprint) and compares in price, I would strongly suggest buying the WiiM Mini instead and pair it with a Topping E30 II. From a pure sound quality perspective, I find this setup way better than the WiiM Pro Plus, which sounds very thin and flat in comparison. With the WiiM Mini, you will still have the great pleasure to navigate your listening experience with the WiiM Home app. If you want a all-in-one streaming dac, I guess you might be able to play around with the EQ settings as suggested but it will have it's limits. With that said, I don't think one can stress enough how great the WiiM Home app is, especially to this price, and I definitely recommend everyone to try it out. But, in my opinion, do it with a WiiM Mini and external dac. Anyway, I hope this comment finds someone and help you navigate through the audio equipment jungle. Good luck!

I used a wiim mini as a dac / pre amp and streamer into my power amp / speakers combo that cost £70k and the wiim did an admirable job . This set up was necessary because my main dac (dCS ) was back at the factory . The wiim UI was also much better than dCS mosaic . The wiim team are to be applauded.

I have both a pro and a mini and use both with an external DAC as wasn’t particularly fond of the internal DAC - I think you answered two questions. No point in upgrading to pro plus if using external DAC. And probably not a lot on the market in terms of streamers that are significantly better quality musicality wise even for significantly more money. Thanks as always for honest review.

It's a bit of a stretch though don't you think, that a sub $300 streamer/DAC can get a 6/10 compared to a using the same streamer with a $9000 Tambaqui DAC. Maybe if he was going to throw in the Mola Mola as his "10" he would think these others, at most, would garner a 5, not a 6, and that a WiiM + Mojo would rank as high as 7.5, but those are his numbers.

Darko's content is always first rate and this was no exception. I have the Mini and occasionally wonder whether I should upgrade to the Pro or Pro Plus. Darko's detailed review and comparisons here provide all the info I need to answer that question. For my needs, the Mini connected to an external DAC is still all I need ,and spending more money (quite a bit more for the Pro Plus) is only going to get me a bit more functionality that I don't currently need.

Yeah, mainly Chromecast, right? I like that better clock circuit in the Pro Plus for less jitter, but I wonder if I could really tell a difference playing through the same external DAC. I've got three Mini devices. Best bargain in audio. You can't begin to build a Raspberry Pi for $99 yet here is a full-blown streamer with a great app for that price. Not bad.

Nice video, thanks John! FWIW, based on your previous review of the WiiM Pro (non-plus) I had purchased it early this year. The DAC was never an issue for me, as I connect the WiiM directly to digital active speakers via SPDIF. I'm really happy with the device, no regrets yet.

Darko, I like your podcasts. They are very illustrative. Thank you. I delivered a pair of speakers made by myself using Morel CAW524 and CAT308. I strive to tune the speaker's crossover, but I couldn't test it. I delivered the speakers to my daughter in Europe, only to find that she was in need of a amplifier. We managed to buy a WiiM Pro Plus. For me, it delivered. It was the first time in years that I wanted to hear music all day long. I must say that the speakers have a dip on the impedance around 4K, but apparently the WiiM managed it very well. Nice little equipment indeed. I connected it with my phone via Bluetooth using the higher resolution posible. Extremely good solution to small spaces

1 comment about the Mojo + WiiM combo for those of us that EQ/use tone controls to either better match other equipment or the room. The fine tuning that the Mojo allows for EQ adjustment is basically a multi-band eq controlled by the lighted 'bubbles'. The Node (or at least the Node 2i I have) only allows bass and treble adjustments, not a finer tuning of specific frequencies.

As a Wiim Pro user, i have to say that the wiim remote i bought separately is absolutety worth it. 4 presets + alexa built in + bluetooth technology (instead of infrared). Inicially, i bought the remote just as a bonus to my phone but it exceeded expectations - super convenient. Also, great video by the way. Very easy to understand... glad wiim is improving their products, especially hardware wise in this new model. The rca performance of my regular Pro is the only disappointing thing for me about it.

I bought the WiiM mainly for the PEQ which is fantastic. The sound from my Focal Aria 926's and Marantz PM6007 is now much more to my liking. With a few tweaks the sound is warmer, vocals are easier to follow and, the highs are smoothed out. To me the WiiM PEQ made a much bigger difference to the sound than when I changed my Amplifier to one costing 5x the price!

The main problem of the Wiim Pro are the rca sockets on the back. Good luck to find a good coaxial cable to plug to this box... (really good luck) ! And, from my experience... the musicality of a dac comes (at 90%) from the output stage. The output stage... the thing that most audiophile don't even know what it's for !!

The Canare-sourced RCAs on Blue Jeans Cable interconnects will work with the recessed connectors. They sell a 75-ohm digital coax cable with that connector. I’ve tried a DH Labs coax into a WiiM pro. It works, but is very snug. Cardas RCAs will not fit at all.

Versus Eversolo - Darko commented in a different video that the Mojo2 was a far better DAC than the DAC in the Eversolo. So that enables you to position where the Eversolo would probably be relative to the Wiim Pro Plus in terms of sound as he scored both the Plus and the Mojo2 in this video. Of course Eversolo has many other features. But it makes me think I will buy a Wiim mini with a Mojo2. Darko I really appreciate your videos again after being away from you site for a few years.

Please read this if you are in the market for a Wiim Pro Plus. I bought the Pro Plus (sells with remote) for €250 The Pro with Remote sells for €190. I went with the Pro Plus because of the 'better' dac, so I wouldn't have to buy an external dac. I bought an external dac one day after I received the Pro Plus. The internal dac really didn't do it for me. In music with some speed behind it, the highs sounded cropped and with the right amount of imagination you could call it 'clippy'. It also sounded really lean to me. It is now hooked up to a SMSL-SU1. I borrowed a Node-X before I bought the Wiim. I went with the Wiim because the connectivity suits me better. Going by the rate list John made, where the Pro Plus had a 6/10 dac, I agree with the Node being a 7/10. With the SMSL-SU1 I made it to a solid 8/10 I would say. TLDR: dac still trash. Buy the Pro and an external dac. SMSL-SU1 dac has way better sound for just €80.

You got it all, John. I have the Pro and several minis. They sit on my the Wi-Fi in my house. I use them all with external dacs and use the WiiM app for Tidal and Qobuz. Both services interface with the app very well. I’m able to access all my lists. Occasionally, I’ll use tidal connect but I find the WiiM app seems to take over and the native Tidal app loses control.

The quality of the DAC is everything when used in a QUALITY stereo system and is VERY audible. I am using the Wiim Pro and with a quality external power supply (overkill) from KECES. A budget alternative power supply would be from iFi. Next choose a quality external DAC, I am currently using the Schiit Bifrost 2 and you've got yourself something quite special! A budget alternative DAC might be the SU-1 from SMSL which may be no better than the Wiim Pro Plus! Cheers!

Hi Darko, thank you so much for your content. I only got into Hifi earlier this year and have spent a lot of time bargain hunting on our local trading platforms and ended up with a pretty nice setup for not a lot of money. I'm currently running a pair of B&W DM308 powered by a Rotel RA-400. My next goal was to find a good streamer and I had my eyes on a Wiim Pro+. I do however live at the end of the world (New Zealand) and getting my hands on one for a reasonable price (if available at all) is next to impossible. Thanks to your video comparing the Wiim to a few other streamers I learned about the Squeezebox Touch and I got lucky yesterday and found one for cheap on Trademe. And now I'm sitting here all excited waiting for my parcel to arrive. A big thanks to you from a Berliner now living in NZ.

Within hours of each other, halfway around the world, you both referenced Tom Wait's Swordfish Trombones, how bizarre is the world of reviewers audio gear. You think someone will make all this mess much simpler for those of us who wish to actually listen to and enjoy music ?. Thanks for all the comparisons. It really helps flesh out the use case scenarios for this device compared to others, especially knowing it has a better clock circuit and that TI op-amp. And thanks for the albums shown in the video. I always find something new (or old) to listen to. I think I could buy the WiiM Pro Plus and be very happy with it at your 6/10 rating for a long time, then buy a better R2R DAC later on, like a Denafrips Ares 12th or Gustard R26 and call it a day in my system. I have 3 of the WiiM Mini streamer/DACs scattered about my home with external DACs (various versions of the Schiit Modi) and love their user interface and love how responsive the company, Linkplay, have been to customer "wishlists" and fixing bugs. More companies should look into that kind of customer service and device support. It is noticed by consumers.

A note on parametric EQ: Those of us who like good music that wasn't recorded to audiophile standards, may find themselves willing to apply some sort of equalization. A graphic eq is convenient, but it distorts the sound more than a paremetric eq would. The latter can be used to subtly adjust the sound signature of the signal chain, if component matching is less than ideal. It can also add weight to vocals and strings. Advanced parametric EQ may be also used for room correction, having determined the modes of the room based on its dimensions. It's a very practical and sophisticated tool. It is much less intuitive than a graphic eq or classic tone controls.

Both of the EQ's on the WiiM take these units up quite a few notches in regards to bang for the buck and overall sound quality. It is nice to be able to really dial in the sound in ways other more expensive streamers will not allow you to do. Just another reason to stick with the WiiM platform. I have owned a few streamers, and the WiiM units are by far the best in regards to their OS, price and sound, especially with an external DAC. I do not know of anything out there that can touch these.

Temporarily the WiiM Pro Plus has replaced the Cambridge CXN V.1 in my system, primarily because of the lack of native support on the Cambridge unit for many of the streaming apps, especially Amazon HD Music.

I love your videos and your approach. While I agree that Sonos definitely has its limitations, what makes it appealing to me is its ease of use and the ability to put music in multiple areas. I have a main room with a serious HiFi system. My wife nearly never uses that. I have a sonos soundbar with satellites and a sub in my main TV room, 2 other sonos speakers in the house, and 3 pairs of outdoor speakers powered by sonos amps. This system sounds pretty darn good and is easy enough to use that my whole family can use it. This is where sonos wins for me. I haven't yet seen a comprably priced integrated system that both sounds good, is easy to set up and easy to use.

I use the wiim pro with an ifi ipower x an smsl m500 mk III dac into a tube preamp to a Sansui 331 receiver. With mission 700 leading edge speakers. It sounds pretty sweet.

While I agree that the Pro Plus using analog outputs is worth the money, what if you want to add streaming to an older HTR with multiple Toslink inputs. In that case, the more cost-effective solution is the Mini as you leverage the DAC inside the HTR.

Now I came with an intention of seriously looking at a WiimPro plus or a Node, that have been in the cart for a while. But your comparison with the SBT just convinced me to stick to my current setup for few more years. My SBT, though it lost its Wi-Fi, but now hardwired, is still going strong in its 13th year! That SBT needs to be pried of my dead cold hands 😂

Good review but I would love to see the how Wiim Pro compares with Wiim Pro Plus with an external DAC, e.g., I wonder whether Wiim Pro with Chord Mojo will also have a 7.5 score. Also I am curious about the impact of "cheaper" DACs, such as Schiit Modi, on Wiim Pro and/or Plus on the sound quality. After I see these reviews, I would be able to decide between Wiim Pro/Plus and Bluesound Node. As for Sonos, Sonos unfortunately cannot handle anything above 24-44, so any streaming platform above this is a "Sonos killer".

Let me tell you that I'm waiting for my Wiim pro plus to arrive home. Still I'm using my ps3 for streaming Spotify premium. It still sounds fenomenal with ny vintage Tannoy speakers and my Yamaha amplifier. I really doubt that wiim pro will sound better than my Sony playstation3. I wish it will to justify my buying. Sony stopped giving Spotify servers for this old machine a few months ago but anyway it keeps working with a completely dark screen and using my cellphone Spotify app syncro with ps3. I use ps3 analog output. So I will use wiim pro plus rca output too. I can't wait

Nah, you could get the mini and save a bunch of money. I have the pro running into an external DAC. Great value for all it does. I mostly use Amazon music. The plus is a waste/overkill if you're going to use another DAC.

This depends first on the functionality you need. The Pro Plus also has a digital input and it supports the Chromecast streaming protocol, which might be useful for casting from some apps. I hesitated, as I wanted to use Chromecast to cast from radio apps. But the Wiim Home app has vTuner (and many more) built in, allowing me to stream all radio channels to the mini. As for DACs, you can probably get the same performance as the Wiim Pro Plus with offerings from Topping, SMSL, ... (check their more recent and cheapest DACs with the I/O you need). However, it is an open question whether you will hear any difference or 'improvement' at all, since the Wiim Pro Plus seems to have an excellent DAC implementation. If you have a DAC or digital in in your receiver or integrated amp and don't need Chromecast, the Mini is fine; otherwise the Wiim Pro Plus seems like a better value proposition.

I do not believe so. You may hear a tad bit of refinement with a higher priced streamer, but I seriously doubt it would be worth the price of entry. Diminishing returns. If you did anything in regards to updating, I would go with the WiiM Pro + for its better internal electronics on the digital output side, and utilize the digital coax on the Pro+ to the Pontus II, it will sound much better vs the optical. You could also use a linear power supply, you will need a 5v 2.5 amp or higher. I use the ifi power supply they sell on Amazon for $69 with my WiiM Pro, which feeds my PS Audio DAC.

Worth pointing out that Sonos has support for Apple music, rather than relying on Airplay 2 (or at least did have when I had my Sonos stuff. Might be limited to 16/44 fwiw.

Because Apple and Sonos have a joint partnership, Apple won't license the music app to other companies to be installed natively as of now. So the only alternative is the Eversolo or Fiio which bypass the restriction by using the mobile version of Apple Music on an android OS.

Fwiw, I own a Wiim Pro and bypass its DAC completely to use with the DAC on board a Loxjie A30. I know John says he's testing it as a ' Streaming DAC' but I'd really wonder who'd really buy a Wiim product for its onboard DAC quality? Quite happy with my set-up incidentally, not high end but certainly good value!

I have my eye on a Loxjie A30. Trying to make a small hifi setup for my office. It's either that or the SMSL DL200, or AL200. Torn between the two. I have HEOS on my Denon for streaming in living room. But i might need a device for my office as well. Looking closely at the Wiim Pro Plus.

I just did. The Pro Plus is on sale today and the DAC quality seems good enough to stand alone with my stereo system.

It is clear to me that the Wiim pro plus offers a better sound than the pro version. If you’re going to use its internal DAC. I am still confused if I use it as a streamer only does it have any sonic advantages over the pro version? Anybody that can help would be greatly appreciated.

Would be curious to see a poll on who still uses a laptop/pc as a streamer versus a dedicated hifi streamer. I personally prefer the experience of using the computer app, over using an app on my phone, so I haven’t made the switch to a streamer. I was however surprised to hear significantly better sq on my 2014 MacBook Air compared to a new Lenovo laptop (going into same dac via usb). Should try the wiim to see if it’s that much better than my Mac.

I have a Mac mini, 2017 model attached to a Pi2 Mercury V2 streamer. The Mac mini is powered by the Teradak power supply, The Mercury V2 is, was, hooked up to my PS Audio DAC... I prefer the sound of the WiiM Pro > PS Adio > Amp vs the Mercury/Mac. And I also have an Iris DDC, same thing, the WiiM pro is equivalent in regards to sound to my ear vs this more expensive gear, through my PS Audio DAC. Diminishing returns.

Thank you for your review of the Wiim pro plus as I finally purchased one. I like the app interface for streaming form Amazon music as it shows the quality of the streaming music call HD and Ultra HD. I did notice that AirPlay 2 didn’t work when the Wiim and iPhone are connected both on WiFi, however, streaming airplay did work when the Wiim was connected with an Ethernet cable. The iPhone does show Apple Music files on the Wiim app as my music and plays when both device are using a WiFi connection. I may in the future evaluate if a better low noise 5v power supply may improve the sound output quality of the on board DAC and analog circuit?

Not a 'what about' question John but the price differential between this and the Volumio Primo is eye-watering. Two different animals, admittedly (XLR and HDMI on the Primo plus the obvious investment in software), and you were a much younger man when you reviewed the Primo ;) Thanks for the review - four thumbs up and I was already subbed.

I'm still surprised the Yamaha WXC50 hasn't gotten on your radar yet. All in one streamer with heaps of connections and it has its own app. It's often sold out in audio shops in Melbourne AU

I've had a WXC50 for a few years, it sounds and looks good and AirPlay has been faultless. However the MusicCast app is terrible, which is shame because I'm a Yamaha fan. The most recent issue I've found is even with a firmware update it wont support Qobuz and that is now my preferred platform... I've held out on ordering a Bluesound Node for years because of the price and average internal DAC performance, the Wiim app can't be worse than MusicCast it supports Qobuz so I think it's my next purchase.

I'm using LMS with two Transporters, still the best DAC for reasonable money I've heard within input on S/PDIF etc.

I plan to get a Wiim pro around this holiday season. As my Denon receiver doesn't have any DAC, I'll need to purchase one. My thoughts are that using an outboard DAC gives me a greater path towards upgrading.

I don't think I've ever used my WiiM mini's internal dac. I've always used it for the modern features for my older system and fed it into an amp. WiiMs are perfect for that purpose!

Nice review, John. I have the WiiM Mini connected via TOSlink to the internal DAC inside my NAD D3045 in my bedroom and have been eyeing the Node X for use with our vintage 00’s-era McIntosh C15 pre / MC202 power amp in the living room. Skipped the Pro due to having the same DAC as the Mini but this new upgraded DAC for the Pro Plus has me interested.

I love WiiM products, but I wish they had Apple Music hi-res capability native vs AirPlay. That’s why I’ll go with Eversolo dmp-a6.

Hey, I've never had Chromecast so I'm a little confused. If I use the Google Chrome browser on my PC, would I be able to "cast" the audio from a web page like the Internet Live Music Archive to the WiiM? Thanks. Sure would be nice.

I too had issues with the remote. You have to have your phone, and remote very close to the pro plus fit it to pair.

I use Arylic S50 Pro+ as Preamplifier, does Wiim pro+ make a better sound. I like Arylic makes music more analog sounding to other DAC's and why I bought it was optical in (TV) and out (amp), just like Wiim does. Do you know the difference between those two?
