I always use a few soil moist granules in hay racks, pre-hydrated. Really helps keep water from pouring through, especially when put at the very bottom.. I love hayracks, keeping them damp will be easier in the shade. They look great!

You have the loveliest figure and clothes.. they're simple but stylish. I love that tshirt. Very youthful and cute ☺ ps, you 'might' need to get window stickers. We have planters and the birds dont see the window panes just the reflections of trees and plants - without the stickers (you can get pretty ones off Amazon) the birds sometimes strike the window. That tip is for all viewers to prevent bird deaths ☺x

Thank you so much! Can you believe that I found this shirt at a local craft store? Such a great find! Thanks for the tip on the windows & birds, thankfully in the 16 years we’ve lived here I’ve only had 1 or 2 birds to run into the windows. Happy gardening!

Love it 😍 💖. Love Kinsman’s products. I did 2 smaller scale hay racks from Gardner’s Supply under the windows of our garden shed. They too are in mostly shade. I planted them over 2 weeks ago and watered them once and they are still wet. Maybe too wet. I put begonia, coleus, impatient, sweet potato vine and ivy. The leaves of the coleus are curling a little which makes me think they are too wet. They have the aqua-save coco fiber liners.
@GardeningwithCreekside4 жыл бұрын
If your soil is super wet then I would agree. I find that the water saving products are good for hot sunny locations but can often be too wet for deep shade areas. You might want to consider switching out your soil and replanting the boxes.
@laurenwellman25164 жыл бұрын
Gardening with Creekside I agree. When it rains, I think these baskets get the run-off from the roof of the shed. Like you said, it’s all a big experiment and nothing is perfect, but it’s fun.

Love these will definitely look at the site, just a suggestion, put a block of wood behind the baskets to lift them from the siding, that way the draining water doesn't stain your siding, watching you from St. Joseph, MO, formerly Camden, SC.

Thank you so much for gardening tutorial. Hope you follow up with progress in later months. Curious if the hay racks create more drainage therefore require more watering? Thanks
@GardeningwithCreekside4 жыл бұрын
So glad you enjoyed it! When they were first planted a few weeks ago I only had to water them once every 2-3 days but as it gets hotter & their roots get more extensive I will end up having to water them once a day. Next Spring we will explore putting them on some type of irrigation.

W👀W!!! Those hayracks are massive! I love your plant combinations, they look great now but will be stunning once they fill out. Did you mention the name of the hayrack manufacturer? Love the window boxes. You said these are shade plants but will get some morning sun. I am looking for plants and color for full shade. I want to do some containers on my back porch and it gets NO sun. I am finding ot hard to find flowers/plants with color. Thanks for any help or advice you could give.
@GardeningwithCreekside4 жыл бұрын
Such a great question! I often find in my truly deep shade areas I have to use foliage plants to bring me lots of colors & textures. Hostas, ferns, brunnera, spikenard, astilbes, caladiums, etc will give you so much interest! Also, I would go to your local nursery & ask them for ideas on flowering annuals. I find that the impatiens do really well for me in shade.
@jeuler72664 жыл бұрын
Love your videos! I’m just below GSO, will PW caladiums overwinter if soil isn’t to damp?
@GardeningwithCreekside4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! We are treating them as annuals in our zone 7 climate but customers are asking if they can try to save them for next year. It never hurts to try! They must be exposed to extreme cold & prolonged dampness or they will rot.
@sallyrichardson40824 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same thing. I put caladiums in pots so it’s easier to put them up for winter. I’m near Greensboro too, and know we can’t always have a mild winter like the last one.
