Note to editor after Meesh & Dee finish S2: check out the ending scene in C1E39 when Uriel abdicates followed by Vex reading lips & getting tipped off that dragons had been spotted flying to the city. The looks of shock on the faces of the cast was a thing to behold. And then the "19 misses" moment. In C1E39, it's from 3:25:34 to 3:37:10 in that Geek & Sundry video of that episode. Most compilation videos crop out different faces - so just showing the original video to M&D would be advised.

A note about the eye in season 1 and the green dragon (Raishan) here, she was not asleep in Brimscythe’s horde. The stones in the rock were items similar to a palantier in LotRs… they are communication stones to the rest of the Chroma Conclave (the four dragons in this episode) and Raishan heard and saw Keyleth through her stone. That’s how they knew Brimsythe died, and why they invaded Tal Dorei when they did. In the campaign, this was one of the biggest moments because it felt like a consequence for their actions but not for anything they did wrong. And after everything with the Briarwoods, the group were more serious about setting things right and taking responsibility. And you’re right, that little girl was strangely suspicious… I wonder what is going on there…😉🤣

A note on Dragons and shapeshifting in D&D: Dragons can't inherently shapeshift, it's not a natural ability of theirs. _But_ dragons _can_ learn to cast basically any kind of magic that other people can learn. So a dragon who's smart and motivated enough can absolutely learn a spell like Polymorph (which, incidentally, is also the spell Scanlan uses to turn into other creatures) to turn into, say, a human or an elf or a gnome or whatever. So not _every_ dragon can shapeshift, but _any_ dragon possibly could.

5:19 - *“Grog, careful!”* This scene of Grog shattering his "favourite head-chopper" is a representation of another famous moment in CritRole history; I'm sure there must be a "table to screen" video of this one. It is the seminal "19 misses" moment, that drove home to the group just what they were facing here. As I remember it, Travis was executing a multi-attack series, rolled for the first attack, announced a 19, picked up the die to roll the next attack - and then froze when Matt answered: "19 misses." Those two words changed everything. If a 19 didn't get through, then the dragon must have an Armour Class of _at least_ 20. They'd never faced anything like this before. An AC of 20 or above meant that, if they pooled all their talents and magic, they could _maybe_ buff one or two of their group to the point where they had a chance of _occasionally_ landing a hit. In fact, Travis managed to roll _one_ result in the mid-20s as part of his attack series, which managed to slip though, thus establishing an upper limit to the dragons' AC. This moment drove home that the Chroma Conclave was not a "tough to beat" enemy, but a "literally, mathematically _impossible_ to beat" enemy. A "tough to get away from alive, with at least _some_ of your limbs attached" kind of enemy. And all of it came from a fan sending Matt a beautiful set of chromatic dragon minis (which were not very "miniature" at all), and Matt was inspired to not only use them, but use _all_ of them. At once.

Keyleth isn’t shunned. She’s actually in line to be the next head of state for her people. The Ashari tribes are a loose association of settled nomadic tribes and druids that found gates into the four elemental planes, and set up shop around each gate to watch it, and prevent threats from crossing through. When a new leader is called for in one of the four splinter tribes, they’re sent out from their settlement to seek out and earn the favor of the other three Ashari tribes (a journey called an Aramente) before they can return and assume the office of leadership. Keyleth’s from the Air Ashari, so she needs to seek out the Earth, Water, and Fire Ashari (in no particular order) to complete her journey. If she can’t earn the favor of the other three tribes… well, at that point it becomes exile.

13:48 ah, no, I think there's been a bit of a misunderstanding. Keyleth is on her Aramente. Which is a sort of test/journey that each new candidate for the position of headmaster of one of the 4 Ashari tribes has to undertake. The basic idea is to have that candidate leave their home tribe, go out into the world, learn, grow in power, then visit each of the other tribes, introduce themselves and face a challenge. Only when they've completed all three challenges set by the other headmasters of the other tribes can they go home and become the new headmaster of their tribe. (I think they can also come back if they fail a challenge, but then someone else will be sent out to attempt the Aramente)

Umbrasyl (Matt Mercer) the black dragon, known as the "Hope Devourer", with acidic breath and who can rain acid from his wings. Raishan (Cree Summer) the green dragon who spews poisonous gas. "The fabled Lance Of Dragon Slaying" is a reference to Margaret Weis' and Tracy Hickman's "Dragonlance" Books. In wich those play a pivotal role. Those books pretty much started the Fantasy/Dungeons & Dragons craze in the 80s and showed many that "Fantasy Stories" could be more than just Tolkiens Lord of the Rings.

I`m just going to say that you are *amazing* at picking clues and foreshadowing. And as a big fan of Cassandra de Rolo, it`s very nice to see her being appreciated! Percy definitely made no mistake giving a city to her. Writers and animators did so much work, bringing this feeling of ruined home and devastation to a show. I always cry at the scene when refugees come to VM`s keep - and are offered shelter (sadly Vorugal ruined everything). It was a huge moment in the campaign for me and I am very happy that they kept it here. Next episode is very good, one of the best for me.

So glad that you guys are getting into season 2! While I love season 1 and the Briarwood arc, this is when the campaign took a big turn and it's so epic how they played it out in the show. Watching Matt describe this scene in the campaign was horrifying, especially considering how much work he has done to build this world and this city that was important to the campaign and the party. They did an amazing job portraying it and the dragons powers in the show. Welcome to DnD where dragons are very intelligent and different colors of dragons have different powers. Chromatic dragons (like the Chroma Conclave members) are evil and selfish, they don't work well with others, while metallic dragons are good and are known (at least in Exandria) to help humanoids at times. Examples of powers shown in the show (spoilers for the dragons names): Blue dragon (Brimscythe) - lightning, Red dragon (Thordak) - fire, Green dragon (Raishan) - poison, Black dragon (Umbrasyl) - acid, White dragon (Vorugal) - ice. And as you guys said (and we saw in s1), dragons can also shape shift into humanoids.

D&D dragons are a bit different than standard fantasy in that the color of the dragon determines what kind of breath attack it has. Here we go! Man you guys are moving fast, which is great! Awesome reaction again! So you understand a little bit about dragons in D&D, they are very intelligent and can speak. They can transform themselves into human form (like in the first season). They can usually cast spells and their color determines a few things about them, like if they are good or bad and what kind of element they use for their breath-weapon (like red does fire, blue does lightning, white does ice etc... although sometimes a dragon can do multiple kinds of element)

Matt (Dungeon Master) revealed that he had planned on killing Gilmore during the dragon attack. He expected Vox to just GTFO of the city, but because they took the time to go check on Gilmour, they had the opportunity to save him. These are the kinds of twists that make DnD so much superior to any video game.
@mayaenglish54242 ай бұрын
Well kind of, he didn't plan to kill Gilmore definitively, it was up to the players (unknowing) choice. The players could have either gone to get the gold and supplies they were told was stashed in a specific location, or to find Gilmore. If they had gone to find the gold first, they would have showed up to the shop to find Gilmore dead. Instead, they found injured Gilmore and no gold, Which I think is a great trade! I'd take Gilmore over a Dragon's horde any day, and Vox Machina would agree with me!

Percy pointed out that Brimsythe, the dragon from the first couple of episodes, was posing a General Krieg, under his command he took the greatest military on the continent of Tal’dorei and decimated it. By leading it unprepared and un-equipped to fight an adult blue dragon. This was in the works before Vox Machina showed up. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if Thordak allowed the only adult dragon among a group of ancient’s the position of infiltrator because he suspected that dragon would run up against heroes/mercenaries and he didn’t want to tip his hand that their were ancients involved.

In the campaign they spent a LOT of time coming up with various reasons why this was all their fault (like, the players themselves seemed desperate to make it their fault for dramatic tension) and when one thing got explained away they came up with another way it COULD be their fault. Like, Matt kept having Alura (who was present during this time in the campaign) basically explain over and over that it's not their fault. I like how they summarized it here with Keyleth going "is this our fault for killing Kreig?" and Percy swiftly shutting it down going "no, Brimscythe was already dismantling Emon's army before we showed up, this was always the plan."

I would love to run you and and some of your friends a One-Shot game if you would be interested. This can be done 100% virtually... so could even be done by some lucky Patreons/fans if you want!

NGL. Matt Mercer voicing the dragons in the campaign was great, more terrifying. These voice actors did good but Matt just brought passion. Probably because they're his creations, his babies. I recall finding out Matt was not going to voice all the other roles and was a bit let down. 😅 I understand it though, supporting other voice actors. Especially since role after role is taken by someone like Chris Pratt (Mario, 😂🤦♂️). It goes to show that Matt, Sam, Laura, Travis, Marisha, Taliesin, and Liam support their art and aren't all about themselves. Some great voice actors joined the campaigns here and there and livened up the crew a bit. Was like watching the cast react to a new toy. 😂

Liam (Vex) and Sam (Scanlan) are also voice directors. Sam has won 2 Emmys doing animated shows for Disney. They know everyone so they invite their voice actor friends to do the show. For instance, David Tennant (Dr Who, Azrael on Bad Omens, Mr. Purple on Jessica Jones) agreed to be Brimscythe because Sam directed him playing Scrooge McDuck on DuckTales. They became friends so he did the dragon for scale.

Also the big name Screen Actors that are casted are mainly minor npcs and major villains with fewer voicelines and dont live or arent seen past a few episodes, David Tennant (Doctor Who) plays Brimscythe who dies in ep 2, Tony Hale as Fince (TV series Arrested Development & Veep), Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings Merry) plays Archie who dies in ep 9, Rory McCann (Game of Thrones The Hound) played Duke Vedmire who dies in ep 9, but a major Exception would be Delilah Briarwoods’ VA Grey Delisle aka Azula from ATLA. But frequent minor npcs are played by fellow Voice Actors that people who dont keep track of VAs wouldn’t know immediately like Sunil Malhotra as Gilmore, Esme Creedmiles as Cassandra de Rolo, Gina Torres as Keeper Yennen, with the Exception of Allura’s VA Indira Varma who was in Game of Thrones as Ellaria Sand, and other HUGE tv shows and Lady Kima’s VA Stephanie Beatriz from Brooklyn 99, In the Heights, and Encanto.

Something interesting about the scene where they rescue Gillmore. They almost let him die without knowing. They started picking up magical things to help, but Liam was bound and determined to find him, so he got the rest to stop looting, and find him. He was down to close to dead when they found him and others with him.

Emon is in ruins, and the rest of Tal-Doei is next unless our bunch of idiots can help it. Welcome to Season 2 where things get worse before they get better, but they sure do get more humorous and emotional, too! Be ready to laugh .... but also, tissues. This one hits!

Wonderful job, ladies! 1) This episode is great at replicating the utter confusion, tragedy, and the general "WILL THE PARTY SURVIVE?!?!" feeling of the attack on Emon from the game. 2) RIP Lance Reddick. I'll have some good news to share at the end of the season. 3) DnD Lore (my favorite kind of Lore): So, in DnD, the pattern is that all chromatic dragons (like white, blue, green, red, black) are all evil and all metallic dragons (bronze, silver, gold) are good. It's also in DnD lore that most dragons of any scale color rarely team up with each other. So, that's what the Chroma Conclave should tell you, that they're evil and they're together, which should make people terrified and super confused, which just fuels the fear even more. Wonderful naming by Matt.

Also, you're looking for a group now? Good! Might I throw my hat in the ring do DM a game for you two, plus a few of my friends, if so?

There was some tiny foreshadowing in Season one, in Brimsythe's basement he had a rug on the floor showing all five colors Red, White, Black, Green & Blue, now you know why. There are soo many hidden details, if you have already watched the original campaigns. That is one thing that make this so great for newbies and existing Critters alike. I've watched campaign three times now, Nearing the end of my third watch through of Campaign Two. While current watching campaign Three, once I finish campaign two again, I start on my first re-watch of campaign three.

when we were watching the campaign, we were all wondering how Matt planned to top the Briarwoods arc. he had a couple episodes of low stakes, touching on player's backstories, and even had them visit General Krieg's house to remind the players of the scene with the Orb referenced here and originally depicted in S1E2. and then at Uriel's speech, he pulled this, and it was just as devastating then. at the end of the sessioin, Matt looked up at his shell-shocked players "I just destroyed something that I built. It's a really weird feeling", even though he'd been planning this for a couple years at that point.

And without getting too spoilery, Matt had planned to end the campaign after the Chroma Conclave, but Vex/Laura's maintained interest in a particular plot point throughout the rest of the campaign basically made him go "....you know what, not yet"

Welcome to the Chroma Conclave arc. Four *Ancient* dragons uniting to bring down the mortal realm. Their members are Thordak the Cinder King (Red dragon, fire breath), Raishan the Diseased Deceiver (Green dragon, poison breath, the only female of the group), Vorugal the Frigid Doom (White dragon, ice breath) and Umbrasyl the Hope Devourer (Black dragon, acid breath, voiced by Matt Mercer who is the game's DM and voiced Sylas Briarwood in season 1). Along with Brimscythe the Iron Storm (blue dragon, lightning breath, slain in the first two episodes), they form the Chroma Conclave. They are Chromatic dragons (Red, Green, Blue, White, Black, all parts of the chromatic color scale) as opposed to Metallic Dragons (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Steel, Platinum). Chromatics are generally the evil dragons, Metallics are the good or neutral ones. The terrifying part is Chromatics NEVER work together, they're solitary hunters and hate each other as much as they do mortals. So for five of them to form an alliance, it's unheard of. Add to that these four are *Ancients*, i.3. about 800+ years old with Thordak pushing 1,000. In comparison, Brimscythe was a young adult, about 100. Dragons grow stronger the older they get. An adult dragon needs a good sized party of higher level fighters to take. A single Ancient needs *armies*. Four ancients are apocalyptic. Any one of these would be the main villain at the end of any other fantasy story like the Hobbit with Smaug. But these four are working together, something never seen before. In the game's version of these events, Matt was terrifying in his descriptions. He had built up this world for about 3 or 4 years by that point between the private home game and the year of Critical Role itself. In a single session he destroyed Emon, the city they had spent so much time exploring and getting to know. None of the players had ever really faced one of these before, not like this. Dragons, sure, but almost never a single Ancient, much less four. Travis (Grog's player) had the best reaction when he went to attack Raishan. He rolled to attack and got a 19 (rolling a 20-sided die to see if he hit, adding his assorted bonuses from his weapon and gear). A 19 is really good in low to mid tier D&D combat as most things you're fighting against isn't going to be that tough. But here it missed. Grog, swinging with all his might, the heavy hitter of the group, couldn't scratch this dragon. When Matt told him he didn't hit, Travis had this look of utter shock and horror as it dawned on him "oh, we're in way over our heads here". This was not a fight you could win. This was a cataclysm you would be lucky to survive.

Small correction. Main 5 of metallic dragon are gold, silver, bronze, copper and brass. Platinum dragon in lore is just one and it is semi god IIRC and the rest are similar to purple dragon. Technically metalic, but not main five. Also they are just good dragon, neutral ones are gem dragons.
@cloudstone1233 ай бұрын
In case no one has explained it to you, in the D&D Lore there are many colors of dragons. Chromatic color dragons are an evil type. Metallic colored dragons are good aligned. Black Dragons breathe Acid, Green dragons breathe poison gas, Red dragons breathe Fire, Blue dragons breathe lightning, White dragons breathe cold.

Ngl I enjoyed this season much more than the first one. I feel like in S2 everyone gets to shine, and the story is richer, whereas S1 was more of Percy's personal vendetta (and if you're not the biggest Percy fan, it gets a little boring till the end).

Spoilers: “Wait weren’t there 4(shapeshifting) dragons?” “Yea, and then there was this suspicious child with green eyes” “Yea…. Must be related to the briarwoods” -facepalm- so close, yet so far…

Season 2, Episode 1 really throws you into the deep end immediately. It was also every D&D player's payoff. Finally seeing dragons (great wyrms) as immensely powerful and intelligent, capable of magic, all with different breath weapons depending on their breed. Enjoy the ride! 🫰
