Plus she is the woman in his video for Uptown Girl. Of course I am on the cusp of the ages you mentioned, and there are probably sadly not a huge amount of people into Billy Joel my age either or younger at least to the point of knowing his work more than causally (such as the tidbit she painted the cover picture on his last pop/rock oriented album River of Dreams). I remember hearing her name as a kid too and my dad mentioning her when I first started getting into Billy Joel before I delved into his history. And I would have been writing songs about her too I don't blame him. The mysterious blonde is Christie Brinkley, who at the time was the top supermodel in the industry. This was her first film appearance. She would later marry (and eventually divorce) singer Billy Joel who featured her on his hit, "Uptown Girl" which he wrote regarding a different supermodel. That pairing gave hope to average looking, short guys that they too could attract a tall, gorgeous supermodel (however unlikely). The first National Lampoon movie I can recall is Animal House, featuring among others, John Belushi. However, a number of jokes did not age well.

It's a running gag throughout the National Lampoon's Vacation series (this, European and Christmas) that the kids are played by different people in each one, yet remain around the same age. Though in Christmas Vacation, cousin Eddie's kids are Rocky and Ruby-Sue; Dale and Vicki aren't seen at all, Rocky and Ruby-Sue aren't seen in this film though must have been born to be as old as they appear in 1989. European Vacation is worth watching too, it stars William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence from Karate Kid/Cobra Kai) as Audrey's boyfriend, and also features local talent in the Europe scenes like British comedians Mel Smith, Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) and Eric Idle of Monty Python fame.

Yes, had Clark worked with a travel agent who would have known about the Wally World shutdown, he would have avoided all this. National cell phone coverage and internet weren't available to most folks in '83. Most advertisements and phone numbers would have been in travel magazines; the writing was all about the funny awkwardness of travel and the extremes families would take to go somewhere like Disney World. They did play up a lookalike of Walt Disney and his surviving brother "Roy", with their trademark skinny mustache, who was overseeing the corporation at the time. That same year big blocks of stock shares were being sold off to investors outside the Disney family; I was caught up in the Christmas time layoffs. It was a good time to poke fun at the company, kinda like now. Great reaction Mary!

The family road trip was a bit of a "middle-class American tradition", at least as I experienced it. My mother was a teacher so from June through to August she was not working and thus my dad's yearly vacay was scheduled to coincide with that. As a kid I never really appreciated the sacrifices they had to make in order to provide "us kids" these journeys outside of our everyday worlds, but as an adult and knowing the sort of logistical planning required for these sojourns I treasure these experiences much much more. This film is nostalgic for me since its a cartoon exaggeration of my childhood and the humor comes from being able to relate to the "what if THIS had happened"?

Thank you Mary for another premium comedy reaction. This movie is a prime example of a Chevy Chase parody. Roy Walley is of course a parody of Walt Disney complete with Mickey Mouse transformed into Marty Moose (keeping the initials & complete with theme song). Wally World of course in their version of Disneyland. I always wondered, if Disney had known how much of a classic staple of Hollywood this was to become, would they have bartered for all the advertising over the last 41 years? Probably not but this movie (and the three that followed) have been watched over and over even to the point of the sequel that was made about the grown children in 2015 (not that great but you can't not finish the franchise 🤷♂). You should also check out Beverly D'Angelo (Ellen Griswold) in Clint Eastwood's _*Every Which Way... *_ movies. They too are both classic 70s comedies. Ya gotta love a good comedy franchise 🤣. Clark has the weirdest luck when it comes to vehicles. In this one & in 'Christmas Vacation,' both times he goes from seconds away from killing himself & his entire family to somehow ending up at his destination.. *"We're here!"* 🤣🤣🤣

Wally World is actually Magic Mountain, near LA. I drive past it all the time when my family heads down there but I’ve only been once like 20 years ago.

Usually the car gets crushed at the junkyard. Mr Walley was also Mr Duncan in Home Alone : Lost In New York. "Clark is a bit problematic" LOL

The motel where they stayed after losing their credit cards is in my hometown of Pueblo, Colorado. There is a video from a youtuber that stops at every main point on the movies trip. The motel is still operating today. Its located on lake avenue near the hospital. Just incase anyone wanted to google the location.

Maybe it is because I was pretty much exactly Rusty's age in 1983 and I took cross-country road vacations with family, but this is my favorite Vacation movie by a mile.

Aunt Edna is played by the late Imogene Coca, Mary. She was one of the best comedians of all time, and a very nice lady in real life. I've heard it said that when this movie was being made, she was worried that she was being too mean as Aunt Edna.

Wally World (Six Flags Magic Mountain) had about 3 roller coasters at the time and now they're the roller coaster capitol of the world with 20!

I love how Clark is trying to be Superdad in these movies but gets increasingly unhinged by the end from all the stress
