I love this run, but love it more and more the more I read it. For instance I used to dislike the art in it, but now I’ve become a huge fan of the art. I think it looks amazing. And the story just gets better the more you dig into it. And the climax with the Phoenix is thrilling. Really great. Really a brilliant collection.

I loved this run. I do remember thinking that Magneto was a bit too silly and the final story was a bit too short, but those are minor gripes. Overall it was great. And you are right, one forgets how much stuff was in there; I was getting my memory jogged right along with you. Definitely getting this. I'm hoping a reread via this reprint might even raise those final 2 arcs a bit; maybe they'll tie in better, or somehow work better, for me now than they did then. Anyway, good review, rock on.

Nice, I managed to get a unused copy of one of the first printings, with just the black covers. I love this run, I am glad, it's getting reprinted so more people can experience it.

Great review. Not a perfect run but I think it brought the X-Men title back into relevance at a point when it was sorta aimless. Looking to pick up the reprint of this omnibus next year. Astonishing itself had its issues, but I did appreciate the return to the costumes.

I liked how Morrison took all the classic X-Men building blocks--the school, the phoenix saga, the days of future past, magneto, weapon X--and scrambled them up into a new distinctive configuration. Lots of great ideas that weren't told in the best way, felt like it wasn't given enough time to develop. But when it is all revealed in the very last book that the entire run was the work of Sublime it elevates the entire thing.

There's definitely a lot of good ideas at work here, my biggest criticism is the whole Xorn storyline and how that works out...

No matter how you feel about this run, it's hard to ignore that this was the beginning of the end of X-Men's sales dominance. It gave me a reason to drop the books, personally

I think post 2000 X-Men is just very different to pre 2000 X-Men. Personally I do prefer the classic stuff, Claremont's run being the very best in my opinion. When it comes to more modern X-Men, I only read it very selectively, and I didn't like the whole Hickman era at all
