Good comparison - thanks. I will stick to my IC-705, in fact I will up the ante and will be buying a second IC-705. IMHO 3DSS is a gimmick, not useful. I have a FTDX-10, I tried the 3DSS for 10 seconds and have never used it again in 1.5 years. A killer feature of Icom that Yaesu lacks is the ability to have all meters on the display at the same time - power, SWR, compression, ALC, current draw, temperature - this is handy for monitoring all levels and adjusting as required without having to switch meters all the time. Icom waterfall and spectrum scope has always been better than Yaesu - sharper, higher definition.....and scope averaging, giving a buttery smooth display. Yaesu just display raw ultra fast scope which is very fatiguing. Really good features of the Yaesu is the 2 x antenna ports - big advantage over the one port of 705. And best feature of all is the dual watch - being able to listen to HF and also monitor a VHF repeater is excellent. Oh, the SO239 on the back goes to the HF antenna

Thank You! I agree I love seeing all the meters on the Icom’s this is why I like the extra 2.4” screen on the newly announced Icom 7760 as you can now see the meters while keeping the normal display on the 7” TFT screen! And if they could make a dual receive 705 so you could listen to HF while listening to VHF or UHF would be awesome! One of the draw backs (disappointments with the 9700 is you can’t monitor VHF/VHF or UHF/UHF at the same time). But I am looking forward to hearing more about the Yaesu FTX-1F’s features and capabilities in the future! 73

I have fixed it by buying very cheap TV headphones with lower sensitivity and a separate volume control. @@PrecisionGroupYT Hello! I have FTDX10 right next to IC-7300. Waterfall-wise, DX10 screen resolution looks better, you can connect an external display, which makes signal search a joy... However, I still like the IC waterfall more and think it's implemented better. I like the Icom colors more, they better show the signal strength. I like spectrum scope averaging, which Yaesu does not have. I like fixed edge presets (I usually have CW, SSB, digi and whole band edges set, e.g. 7000-7040, 7050-7200, 7040-7080 and 7000-7200 (region 1)), that helps me to orient myself quickly. And finally, in scroll mode, on Icom, when you move the cursor out of the range, next "page" is loaded. On Yaesu the whole range shifts, but the cursor is still at the end, so you don't see what's next. For example, I am used to zoom in in contests, e.g. to see +-5 KHz from 7004 to 7014, set scroll mode and go over the signals, working all the stations there and when I move over 7014 kHz, Icom serves me another 10 kHz of the band (7014-7024 in this case). Yaesu would shift the window range from 7004-7014 to 7005.7-7015.7, but your cursor will stay at the upper end and you won't see anything you haven't worked yet. You have to switch to fix, center mode and then back, which will reset the range so your QRG is placed at the middle again... This is of course usable, but not as convenient as it could have been... 3DSS... I use it sometimes for fun, you have to cut e sensitity of the waterfall down as much as possible to get rid of the "grass" in order to see useful signals... However even in that case, the geometry does not serve well. You aren't able to identify signals very well with 3DSS. On a normal 2D waterfall you distinguish LSB from USB, various digi modes or CW from QRN, etc. Just by the shape of the signal, but that's not possible with the 3DSS...

The 705 can be charged via USB which makes it compatible with many other options. I have mixed feelings about having an auto tuner built-in. While certainly convenient it adds weight and cost which may be redundant. Many hams will choose a resonant antenna or to use the radio with a modest amplifier after they see what 10 watts can do. Making the tuner optional allows you to match your gear to your intended use. Yes some QRP field radios include a built-in auto tuner, but they typically don’t include built-in VHF/UHF, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a large touch screen. I chose the 705 for its exceptional combination of technology and user experience.

Antenna socket on the tuner should have been BNC not SO239 in my view. The two good points with the Yaesu is the dual receive and dual antenna ports. I use a a diplexer on my Icom to give me two ports. Fans for finals cost extra and you don't need them for 10w FT8 with the Icom, it all looks too bulky to me. You can run the Icom tuner at the antenna for much better efficiency. All in all I'd only gain dual receive by going Yaesu and would suffer a worse menu system.
