I was very disappointed by How to Win Friends and Influence People. I work in customer service and the thing that makes my job very stressful is that I don't like having conversations with customers, especially during the pandemic when we all pretty much had something to complain about. I just want to provide our service and that's it. No more, no chit chat, no sharing of opinions on anything, etc. I was hoping that this book would help me learn how to take a genuine interest in what people (strangers) had to say about their personal lives, but I found it to be more "fake it 'til you make it", which is what I was already doing and what was making me so miserable.

So I just Konmari'd my room for the new year, and I was worried about books because I cleared out a ton last year because I moved. But after reorganizing everything, I unhauled 40 books and I'm slowly picking a few more off my new shelves 😅 Like I'd been putting off the process for the past few months and left most of my stuff packed, plus I'd previously worked at a book publisher and several boxes of books that I hadn't touched since I'd left my job over a year ago, but it was definitely a relief. Turns out I had a few duplicates, and series that were mixed in hardcover and pb, and then I finally exorcised Twilight off my shelves from 2008. But I'm really working on saying goodbye to books that are fine but otherwise taking up space from something else I love ☕

God I love Death Note so I was so shook when you pulled out the freaking black series but you're so right. I've adored that series since I was in high school but the way it treats the female characters especially Misa is so deeply disappointing. And I know exactly what Part you're referring to because I was DEVASTATED when I got to that part of the manga. I reluctantly read the next volume and got so bored I put it down and never finished the series until I watched the anime years later. Death Note is one of those things that has some high highs and low lows, and as much as I love the story I can't see myself ever reading through the entire manga cause I think those problems would just drag on so much more, whereas the anime is a pretty quick watch and also has banger OPs. Edited to add: I kinda get you on the cozy vibe books as well! I haven't read Legends and Lattes yet and I'm really hoping I'll like it a lot if I do, but I struggled with I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver for somewhat similar reasons. As a queer nonbinary person I really wanted to enjoy a simple, slice of life nonbinary/male romance, but actually reading it it just seemed to drag on and it felt like nothing was happening. The conflict was all just very basic stuff that I've dealt with day-to-day; acceptance or rejection from parents and peers, school, dating and friendship, coming of age... which should therefore be relatable and interesting, but it was just like. I could just be living my life or talking to someone. This is not exactly the experience that I read books for, you know? I'm hoping with the fantasy setting of Legends and Lattes I'll take to it better, but it doesn't always help so who knows. Slice of life is just hard for me to get into!

Not gonna lie, I kinda feel like even if your convinced to keep those books this round by next round of your unhauls your going to be Unhauling them anyway. That’s not a critique, there is nothing wrong with that at all. But you are all about only keeping things you love. And as you read more and more things that you know you love you aren’t going to keep having room for things your unsure about.

I get why people view it the other way because it's how it's pushed to us and you really have to take a step back and think about what you're reading and the messages being given to you before you realize how manipulative and toxic it is. Honestly I feel exactly the same about Babel like you did... It was just not for me... I think it is an important book to tell but I just didn't care about the characters and their story... I only really liked the ending, but for me that didn't "save" the book :D

I've read all of Komi Can't Communicate (which is 21 volumes in English so far) and like, it's all the same? I mean I LOVE this series, every volume is 4 or 5 stars, but nothing really changes in the story. It's just a bunch of cute little vignettes, and there isn't any plot. I don't think I'm going to buy the volumes myself. I would recommend just reading them online or from the library? Because yeah even though it's one of my favorite series, I don't think it's worth it to buy them all

For Komi, I would say you can just watch the anime. If you become obsessed with the developing romance, then continue to invest in the manga. Otherwise, the library might carry the rest of the volumes if you want to continue reading

I enjoyed Komi Can't Communicate...BUT...I'm glad I got them from the library. It's cute but not something I felt I needed to own so I would say unhaul it. I also felt the same as you about Tokyo Ghoul...another series I'm glad I got from the library instead of buying because it disappointed me so much in the middle and even though I enjoyed the last volume...I didn't think the pay off was worth it.

You not loving the later half of Tokyo ghoul hurts lol, the later half is honestly my favorite portion and see how kaneki changes as a character, Tokyo ghoul is a tough read to understand because there’s a lot of symbolism that you have to look into (the anime skips over) it’s a series you have to read over and over again to get a full grasp of
