On New Year's Eve, Finns used to melt tin horseshoes to predict the new year based on the shape of tin. 🥳
But, since tin has poisonous lead, we now do this tradition with beeswax! 🐝
Here's how you do it:
1️⃣ Melt the beeswax safely in a water bath. It melts at about 60°C/140°F.
2️⃣ Pour melted wax into cold water.
3️⃣ Tell the fortune by checking out beeswax shadow and shape.
Some popular beliefs:
🔸Long ribbons or sticks encourage you to have patience in the new year.
🔸A rugged, uneven surface means money and wealth.
🔸Lace-like edges mean admirers and suitors are in your future.
🔸If it breaks, it will be a busy year. More pieces... The busier it will be.🔸Tiny tear-shaped pieces mean tears.
🌱You can re-melt & reuse the wax, it just needs to be dry.
Safety first. If beeswax catches fire, it should be extinguished using a fire blanket, water doesn't help.
🎉Does this New Year's tradition sound like fun? Let me know in the comments ⬇️

Cool. Reminds me of some parts of Ireland where they throw stones into a bonfire and do various foretelling with that. 🙂

My mom is Finnish, and my sister and i did this with her on New Year's Eve, but it was with tin! She said that the little, clumpy, cauliflower-looking chunks meant money, and sonetimes the tin would solidify into separate "tear drops," which of course meant sorrow was in our future for the coming year. Ive never heard it done with beeswax, though! Interesting.

I really like your videos. My dad was 100% Finnish and I am 50%. My dad's family came to the US through the west coast of the US, Oregon. His dad was a logger and his mother was a "Rosie the Riveter" My dad would never tell me and my brothers about finish language and culture. He failed first grade because they only spoke Finnish at home. I have always been courious about my Finnish haratige and really appreciate your videos. I am learning so much from you. My dad was in the military, so we did not live near any relatives. We visited when we were moving to another base, but I never got to meet any of his aunts or uncles. My grandmother did not like to talk about her Finnish background. It's sad that the American society deterred any other language or customs. Thank you for giving a glimpse into Finnish culture. It is really fascinating.

I respect the tradition, but I don't advise doing this next year, as God/Jesus doesn't want us involved with man made fortune predictions

I too am a non-denominational Christian (we follow the Bible and no man-made rules or "religious" doings). The only thing I do religiously is drink coffee every day. The Bible states not to practice such things as fortune telling.
