New Year's Eve Penske Peel at the 11foot8 bridge

On New Year's Eve 2017, the bridge got another holiday feast, peeling the top off another Penske rental truck. The driver left the scene of the accident after a few Minutes and left the busted truck sitting there in the middle of a busy city road without hazard lights on or any attempt at securing the accident. Later, the Police had to extract the truck from under the bridge. Not sure what the deal was with that.

Dude. This is possibly the greatest 11Foot8 video of all time. It's got it all: 1. An absolutely marvellous Penske Peel, complete with a wheelie and torn sides 2. Driving through a CLEARLY red light 3. The driver wasn't even staying in their lane 4. A nice meal for the bridge to celebrate New Year's Eve of all days 5. Thing is, if it was rented by a company there’s not much Penske or the company can do; you can’t sue an employee for damages caused on the job. The police, on the other hand, could charge the driver with leaving the scene of an accident.

A couple of interesting things to make note of: First at 0:08, that red car is missing its rear window. Irrelevant, but still unusual and interesting. At 0:11, maybe the truck driver saw the bus go through and because of that, thought he would fit, too. At 0:19, during the crash, you can see how the guy repeatedly tapped his brakes in shock. Or maybe those brakes work differently than how I'm familiar with. Finally, at 0:23 and 0:40, you can see that Honda wanted to turn right (signaling), but after seeing the truck crash, decided not to and kept going south. He was like "Nope! I'm not getting near that screw-up!" Also, at 2:43, you can see another cameraman filming the police officer back the truck out, possibly for local news coverage.

Peter Welsh Nope. That's only true if it's GVW is above 26,000 if it's below that amount anyone with a standard driver's license can drive one. I know this because I've been driven trucks like that before that are below that amount. And don't have a CDL. Just because it has air brakes and a liftgate doesn't mean you need a CDL. As for the optional Insurance on rentals it normally doesn't cover the cargo area.

Running a red light 🚦, driving under a bridge that's too low, failure to remain at the scene of an accident.......... I wonder what else that driver is guilty of. Possibly impaired driving and driving under a suspended licence. Too bad you weren't able to catch footage of the driver running away. Maybe the truck 🚚 was stolen.

The trains aren't in any danger. Since these accidents occur with such frequency, the railroad company installed a steel beam next to the bridge to protect it. The trucks aren't hitting the actual bridge, they're hitting the beam that's installed next to it.

Fake ID and drivers liscense will get you a credit card, then you can rent a truck with that. Accident, no worry just dump the lot and get another. Likely if they were doing that the card was about to max out anyway, because why pay if the bank was giving you free money and only cutting the card 90 days later.

I know two people who after a crash took off sprinting until they reached a familiar landmark then "sheepishly" walked back to the crash in embarrassment- One remarking "I remembered that it wasn't my fault time." to the annoyed passenger-- --who (in the retelling) explained that they hadn't stolen/joyridden cars since their early youth but had crashed "often" when being chased onto that road.

When I used to rent trucks regularly many companies had a separate signature/initial section covering this exact information (and the fact that any insurance you bought through them did NOT cover this type of accident). Also many trucks had a (reverse printed) decal on the box so you'd see the height in the side veiw mirror.

Probably a lot of trouble. There's no good place to put a camera on the other side. The nearest building is a couple hundred feet down the road and the bridge is partially obscured by trees. Streetview tells the tale.

The light turns red whenever an over height truck approaches. It's wired in with the giant sign, hooked to a laser, radar, or something that sees that the truck is too tall and coming this way.

Does this idiot not realize that they can still trace the rental back to him? They log those licence plate numbers when you rent the truck. So he caused a wreck, destroying the truck in the process, ran a red light, and fled the scene of an accident? Not only did he just buy a truck, but he's going to see a painful increase to his insurance AND he's going to face some serious charges from the cops. I bet his 2018 is going just awesome.

Did you capture any footage of the driver for the police? Unless it was stolen I am nit sure how they can expect to not be found accountable. But in case they say they weren't driving, your video might help hold them responsible. And they did so many things wrong. Driving on the wrong side of the road in addition to blowing through the red light.

One of my favorite KZbin channels. Suggestion, How about a cam at the other side of the bridge so we all can get a glimpse of the drivers face as the box starts to crumble and how the front the tractor lifts off the pavement. Such an element of surprise for the driver. Also you guys should start interviewing the drivers. Kind of like a documentary.
