Jocko = The true
@podcastsyoutube55243 жыл бұрын
*I transcribed Jocko's speech starting from **5:43**. Read it daily. Print out a copy. Study it. Have a great 2022* "Think strategic. Think long-term. Act strategic. Take action that improves your long term position and moves you towards your long term goals How do you do that? First, figure out where you want to go. Figure out who you want to be. Figure out what you are trying to do with your life. Write them down. 1. What are you saving for? 2. What are you working towards? 3. What kind of physical condition do you want to be in? 4. What kind of relationships do you want to have? 5. What skills are you trying to develop? And just like a leader, you have to explain to yourself the WHY. 1. WHY do you want to... save that money? 2. WHY do you want to... have those goals? 3. WHY do you want to... be in that physical condition? 4. WHY do you want to... have those relationships? 5. WHY do you want to... have those skills? You are your own leader. Give yourself the mission and explain the WHY behind those goals. Write those things down in simple, clear, concise language. Read it before you go to bed. Read it when you wake up. Read it every day until it is embedded in your brain. Consciously and subconsciously. And once you've written those things down. Now with all this talk of strategical thinking, also know this: you need tactical wins. You need to win battles in order to win the war. You need to get out of bed. You need to run. You need to work out. You need to read. And study. And practice. And you need to do things that you don't necessarily want to do. And I know that can be hard. That's why people lose the war. That's why people never achieve their strategic goals. They lose the little tactical battles - the death of a thousand cuts. One missed workout at a time. One donut bypasses security. And then another. And then another. And it all adds up. Why? Because we don't think about the big picture. We don't see the decay from altitude. We don't see it from an elevated position. We are like the frog boiling in the pot as the temperature slowly increases. 1 degree at a time. 1 degree at a time. 1 degree closer to death. 1 degree closer to failure. That is why to win tactically, we have to think strategic all the time. Think strategic ALL THE TIME. Now that you know what you're trying to achieve, ask yourself this question. Ask yourself this question before any action or any in-action. Ask yourself this question: "What I am doing. What I am about to do. Is it going to help me get where I am going? Is this action going to make me stronger, or weaker? Is this action going to make me smarter or more skilled? Will this action move me toward the strategic, long-term goals I am trying to achieve in my life?" And do not lie to yourself. Don't rationalize. Don't negotiate. You have to tell yourself the TRUTH. That is where discipline comes from. Discipline is rooted in the TRUTH we tell ourselves and discipline delivers long-term strategic success. Am I a disciplined person? Sure. But that discipline is there because I know and understand my long-term goals and I know why those goals are important. I think strategic. Strategic thought is disciplined thought. Strategic thought allows you to make the right tactical ACTIONS to move you FORWARD to achieve your goals. To BE who you want to be. And DO what you want to do. So for 2022 and FOR LIFE. Think strategic. Know WHY you are doing what you are doing. And then get out there EVERY DAY. And win those small, tactical, short-term battles. So that you can win the strategic long-term victory that puts you where you want to be. And it's not going to be easy. The fight, the daily fight is a challenge. You will not always want to do what you NEED to do. You will not always FEEL like doing something you need to do. You may not want to fight THAT battle. But you NEED to. You need to. You need to know your strategic goals and you need to know why they are important and then you need to GET UP. Get out of your damn bed. Get off your phone. Get out of the soft and addictive comfort zone that weakens you. And destroys your goals. And you need to get out there into the world and GET AFTER IT. Have a good 2022. And I will see you on the path"

I’ve lived a mediocre life. My dad, the opposite. Responsibility, discipline, and self control were his greatest attributes. He would always exhort me to improve and be disciplined. He would often quote this verse to me: “One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And one who rules his spirit, than one who captures a city.” Proverbs 16:32 Rule my spirit. Self control, discipline. My dad passed away suddenly July of 2021. It’s been hard. But I want to honor my earthly and heavenly father in how I sanctify my life and improve. This video has helped me. Thank you.

Your Dad sounds like someone to admire, and I’m sure he’s the type of man who would’ve given all the credit to God for his great life. Moses was a poor speaker, but God used him to lead a nation. King David made horrible mistakes in his life, but he asked for forgiveness and became know as a man after God’s own heart. Humble yourself before God everyday, remember that Jesus died for every single one of your sins, and no mistake can erase that. You may never live up to your father’s legacy, but surrender control over your life to God and he will use you life to impact this broken world in a way you never thought imaginable. Love people because God has loved you far more. Happy New Year Brother!

Therapist here. This approach is known in my field as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT - appropriate, eh?). In essence, ACT is centered around a single central concept: what are my goals or values, and are my choices moving me closer to them, or further away from them? There's more to it than just that, but that's the gist. I have found that 99% of my clients really resonate with this approach *IF* they have goals. What people don't always understand is that a goal you don't care enough about to sacrifice and fight for, is not a goal. That is why so many people fail in their pursuit, and usually very quickly after the chase is taken up. They take a step or two, hit a challenge, and quit because the accomplishment of said goal, in their minds, does not justify the effort to tackle the challenge-at-hand. At base, people's problems within this sphere are not an inability to accomplish their goals, but rather to set them. All of that is to say, this is a great message, Jocko. I toast to your continued success in 2022 and beyond. GET SOME.

@j.r.r.tolkee70003 жыл бұрын
@@gamebred2094 It's beginning to catch on. I actually only learned about it when I started practicing it with my own therapist. I then realized that it is basically Jordan Peterson's whole program ("Just do something"). When I began to see that all these people who I so deeply admire - Jocko, Peterson, others - were promoting this idea in various colors, I was hooked. The changes I have seen in my clients has been astounding, to say nothing of the benefit it has brought in my own life. Just curious - what have you found the most beneficial in your OCD treatment?

@@j.r.r.tolkee7000 not a therapist here, but I like to dabble in my own philosophies about life. And a lot of people tend to seek me out for advice about things, so I think about life a lot. I like what you laid out about if the goal isn't important enough then people won't make the necessary sacrifices, at least not for long. I've advised people of that in a sightly different framing, I'd love to hear your take on it I've posited an equation if you will that Change = Loss. If you change anything, you lose something, in a literal manner. People aspire to waste less time in their lives, but until they start losing that wasted time they don't realize how attached they were to it. "Wasted" time like talking to friends, watching tv, eating, they aspire to be better, but it's those things that created their identities in the first place and they're important. So the notion of making goals before you intentionally decide to lose things is almost a guarantee of failure I like you listen to Jocko obviously, and Jordan Peterson, and a host of other people that I think color the same idea with different hues. My philosophy aligns closest to something Jordan said, you have to voluntarily adopt responsibility, and by that you voluntarily pick your sacrifices. A person can be made to do anything if obligated or forced, but you'll never get a more productive and also happy and motivated person as the one who picked their losses. It wasn't imposed on them by circumstances, or another person, or whatever. That's a person who, as you said and you're 100% correct, will not stop at signs of adversity. They'll keep going

Truly believe I have ingrained the fundamentals of the daily habits for the long term goals. But. There’s room for improvement. Some missed workouts. You helped me so much!!!!! Part of the life of being a Christian is that I practice disciplines of abstinence and engagement, but your Discipline = Freedom concept has helped me connect the dots on how I can practically go about making difficult, big changes that I want to make in my life. One of the main reasons I have kept going around the same mountain (things that I want to change but don't) is because I lie to myself and don't think strategically (say what I want to do, why I want to do it, do the things daily, and practice good security against the things that I lie to myself about). No more struggling--I'm going to BATTLE. I look forward to hearing about how you strategically take over 2022. Thank you Jocko

This will be my fourth year not doing a resolution, but more-so a one-word "theme" for the year. A word that incapsulates something I can focus on, a strategic goal that guides my tactical decisions. It seems to have been very beneficial to me, as I feel resolutions aren't the move in my life. A few weeks ago I decided the word for this year in particular is "strategic." I have many 5, 10, 20+ year goals and things I want to accomplish and be. Strategic fits my theme perfectly. I am in a place in life where my tactical decisions will play a massive role in my strategic outcome. Feels like Jocko is reading my mind. Happy New Year everyone. Get after it!

Applying Jocko's strategic philosophy to Jocko's (ongoing) goals: "Surf more, JJ better" = Define 'more', define 'better'. Goals left foggy and grey will either stay unachieved, become achieved only in your mind, or worst, become marginally achieved and you don't really notice. Create clear, defined targets, secondary targets, and even milestones up to these. Answer the 'how' you will make this possible. And review yourself during the process. Example: Last year, I surfed 2 x per month average. I will surf 2.5 - 3X per month, and I'll do so by blocking dedicated time the 3rd Saturday of each month. I'll plan to meet a friend who surfs then, do leverage myself socially. I'll log these in my planner to stay on track. "Better" JJ? Better than before, I assume. How to measure... probably based on who you roll with. What are your percentages vs your most consistent rivals... Log that. Figure out why you're not better than you are vs each opponent. Identify weaknesses. Strategically improve each hole in your game.

Jocko honestly even if you don't mention or it gets buried , but from all of my heart I want to thank you . Without any doubt last year was the worst of my life, I lost what I was several years fighting for and as a present to my 30s birthday it revealed to me that the person I trusted most in my whole life was lying straight in my face for probably months and dropped me like a hot potato from one to another day, just three years after I lost the men who raised me like a father due to dementia, literally seeing him die day for day while unable to do anything to stop it , after his funeral met again the person mentioned above and really enveloped hope it would go upward again , but instead I'm since the 'breakup' completely alone , the people I thought were for nearly a decade like brothers or sisters to me won't even answer my calls . My 30s bday is now about two months away and I still haven't been able to cheer at least one beer on it with a 'friend' and in about seven days I have to see the person I thought I could trust more than anyone again because she is gonna be in my class till summer ,it's gonna be straight hell but I need this gratification from that class . I was lost of all hope and motivation ,I was for first time in my whole life seriously thinking about surrendering and end that suffer and by that end it all .. but then I heard firsttime your speech 'darkness' about the people who weren't able to go forward , about aiming my last bullet on the enemy , once without ammo and lost my knife , grabbing them by the throat and no matter what to keep fighting . These were just the right words in the absolute right moment that saved me and spread the lightning sparkle to my mind that engulfed my soul on fire again,not to take this path through hell and suffer but to charge it !! They can cheat me but they can never defeat me , I won't stop fighting, no matter what ! Sincerely thank God that you are out there Jocko and even if we won't ever meet or even talk to another , I will be always appreciate you and your messages which are lightning sparkles in these dark times ! - Si mortem contemnis, timorem vincis. - I. @michaelschlesener2823 жыл бұрын
@@Charles.Wright I can only encourage you to keep it up! Whatever others say, stay your ground, keep the faith! There is already a lot of research about it. It's a win win win thing. First it activates pretty much every regeneration the body has in it's arsenal + grow of brain cells. Second one gets rid of excessive body fat...fat that otherwise grinds down the joints, one also get rid of the fat in the vessels as well as fasting can reverse a fatty liver. Third one saves money the days one fasts which one can invest in better nutrition in days where one eat, which improves one's health even further. I also want to motivate to not holding back from workouts during the fasting days, because this is what the metabolism really improves...it urges the body to switch from anabolism to catabolism, because it needs energy and it needs it now. Once the body is used to switch modes, one does not depend on regular meals anymore. But careful: play this card only if the situation demands it, don't make it a habit...it's about the nutrients one wants to come in constantly. Sure fasting does not help with building muscles and the strength might be reduced during the fasten period. It even takes a day or two until one gets the full strength back (my body: most often the second day after the fastings days with a bit of an strength overshoot). I always recommend and try to stress every muscle of the body within three days (three split). Try to put in 1/3 of the whole body workout in each of the three days. Working out aching muscles is nonsense, can be even destructive as far as I know. But sometimes you have to work out in advance or to catch up.

I needed this. 2021 has not been a banner year for me. So many bad choices. So many impulse decisions that led me further and further off the path that by the time I realized it, I had no idea where I was. I've been lost in the sauce for months now trying to get back on track. Trying to draw upon my time in the USMC to refocus on the goal, but it's like there's so much darkness surrounding me I can't even see my own nose. No more lying to myself that I can manifest my own success. I need to get back on my horse and find my way out of the black, find my way back to the path and gallop down it at full speed. Thank you, Jocko. I wish I could put into words how much your words truly mean to me.

Last night I strategically left a NYE gathering (skipped alcohol and dessert, too) just so I could be up on 1/1/22, at 6:00am, for my usual half mile swim. Yes, it’s just another day. Thanks for this-it’s perfect confirmation that I’m still on the right track.

Becoming your best self is the biggest strategic goal. It is achieved in the 10,000 decisions that you make living an everyday day. The future You is waiting in all those minuscule moment-by-moment choices and thoughts. In every one of them.

"Tactics are the servant of strategy" Chess phrase Cool to see Jocko talk about these concepts, there are parallels between chess and war, and of course these concepts extrapolate into life in general

There's one large issue for me though: I just don't know what it is that I actually WANT. I know that I want to improve myself, to become a generally better person, but I only have a very vague idea of what my actual end-goal is. As a 20 year-old kid and first year into university, I don't know what I want to study or pursue. And without that end goal and me not knowing what I am actually working towards I feel like all of this (Jocko's philosophy and his teachings) is ultimately not suitable for me. For me, when I start something (such as working out) I always drop it after a week or two because while yes, I wish to improve myself, I don't have an end REASON to do so. But until I do actually find what I want, and what I have an affinity for, I'll try bit by bit to improve myself, even if I am just drifting through life aimlessly while doing so.
@kingbenzedits26783 жыл бұрын
I don’t really know you’re situation but since you’re in university make one of your goals to have a really good GPA. Also TAKE ADVANTAGE of every opportunity presented to you. You’re only 20. Why not dabble in a few things and see what you like and don’t like. Hope everything works out for you.
