That whistle sounds pretty good, and I love that we have locomotives around that can change whistles around here and there so that we can hear what they sound like. Hoping that someday they can find a C&O Hooter to put on her just to hear what it sounds like (even if its not permanent). From what I'm thinking I heard, they sound a bit screechier than the N&W ones.
@howiesmith15042 жыл бұрын
I believe C&O 2-8-2s had single note whistles with medium-length bells that sounded like Civil War-era woodburner whistles on a recording or two I've heard...somewhat "falsetto" but not shrill. C&O "Kanawha" 2-8-4s, and 2-6-6-2 1309 and her 1949 sisters, had long bell single note "bootleg" whistles that were a little deeper and, I think, quilled a little more mournfully than the similar N&W freight whistle 1309 usually carries. Here's one off Kanawha 2789 on NKP 765. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIurhpl8ppiJodU The first 14-L crossing blow, before the Berk emerges from the trees, is a perfect quilling job, like a real old time Dixie engineer! Perhaps the WMSR folks. could get a correct measurement and concoct or crowd source an accurate replica. The bell's just a length of capped pipe.

@FanRailer2 жыл бұрын
The fact that it is a brass whistle seems to suggest it predates the Niagaras and L4 Mohawks, as those whistles should have been cast iron. Perhaps it was applied to a J1 Hudson or a Berkshire.

We believe it was a spare whistle the NYC kept in a shop somewhere, it was likely worn by many Hudsons and Mohawks whenever their whistles needed work, just to get engines out of the shop quicker.

Western Maryland sits between the T of western Pennsylvania and West Virginia's coal country - but is close enough to Washington DC to have outsize influence with environmentalists - it is why the Constellation Wind Farm is here. (There is ALREADY talk of expanding it up (into western Pennsylvania) and down (into eastern West Virginia) via the same mechanisms used for parks.)
