where i'm from the steam locomotives are all narrow-gauge standard so your american locomotives seem gigantic compared to ours. 1309 dwarfs them all, it's a real titan of a machine. Glad to see it doing so well on it's first outing. Hopefully someday they can accomodate it on the turntable so it can go both ways! Great shots

Both are "hooter" whistles made from 5" boiler flues (i think,) although 1309's hooter was the original C&O, it doesn't seem to have the same chirp as the A 1218 did...

Yes, and no. It's not exactly 1218's whistle but 1309 is carrying a N&W Single Chime "Hooter" whistle. These were common on N&W's Class A, Y, and Y6b locomotives. Lots of other railroads used "Hooter" whistles on their larger locos (i.e C&O had their own "Hooter" whistles but the tone was a bit different than N&W) N&W "Hooters" just have that VERY distinct sound, so while it's NOT actually 1218's whistle but it's the same type 1218 wears.

Yes, they both wear an N&W hooter. Western Maryland couldn't find a C&O hooter, so they used their own N&W hooter. They sound alike though
