I don't get what's so special about being a courier in New York. You have a grid street system with numbered streets, therefore orientation is super easy, there's as good as no elevation, so you don't even have to be overly athletic, traffic is slow to average and clearly organized, so you neither have to be technically skilled nor have to be predictive while keeping overview. Now before you start bashing on me, i also work as a courier, i've worked in different cities and have also been to New York, although haven't worked there as a courier. I'm not trying to be a dick. I just don't get it. Would some one please explain? Thanks!

Not only the comments about the BMC frame, but he has Dura-Ace Di2 and Easton carbon wheels!! Not sure if they are sew-ups or not? That makes that more like a $12,000 bike new!!

When I was messengering, I was on the bike for about 8 hours of work, as well as my other transit so often on and off 10-12 hours. It's worthwhile being on a bike that performs and that you are comfortable with. My riding style is too hard for a bike like that, but I have seen similar.
@ericchacon59446 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking anyone with a nice bike in NYC, you have about 1-3 hours before you can expect a piece possibly missing, but if you leave your bike outside for more than 1-3 days, if youre lucky you could expect your frameset still there, if not then its time to buy a bike or build the bike up again if the frame is still there.
@mouser42905 жыл бұрын
My main work bike is 6k plus all carbon with hed wheels, I work with messengers that have Bishops as there main work whip. I'm not going to ride a junk bike for 10 to 14 hours a day six days a week if I have a choice, so do but not me. 20grit b-more 44

For a bike messenger he must make a lot of money. Or he inherited a lot of it. That bike he rides appears to be a BMC Teammachine SLR01 which retails in the vicinity of USD$6,000 to $8,000. It's the bike Cadel Evans rode to victory in the 2011 Tour de France. Seeing how bike messengers don't make that kind of money I'm going with the trust fund brat posing as a bike messenger seeing how the occupation has been romanticized and the look made fashionable, at least within the hipster scene.
@unusualbob510 жыл бұрын
I disagree, it's the most important thing for his job and he said he can ride it up to 10-12 hours a day, in which case spending that much on a bike is not unreasonable.
@TheCallerOfHoopla10 жыл бұрын
unusualbob5 yes it is. If you are spending up to ten hours a day on the saddle and your racing then its reasonable. But why would a bike messenger who doesnt make that much money risk a full carbon road bike on the streets where they can and eventually will get hit. Also that thing would get stolen the second they delivered a package unless they always bring the bike in with them. completely wrong tool for the job.

I wish Manhattan Portage had the build quality of Chrome. They have basically the same piece of Chrome but just significantly worse attention to detail, features, organization, and looks. They could do so much better and be much more liked but they cut cost and corners instead of building a better reputation. If you go into both of their stores in Manhattan like I’d do for fun as a bike messenger you know what I’m talking about.

@xR1no9 жыл бұрын
RedBearded T Ah c'mon! You picked out the one arguement you can actually argue about. ^^ It maybe a little chaotic during rush hour, but that's nothing overly special. Go to Thailand and you'll see, what's chaotic! Compared to that, NY is extremely organized. I'm not saying it's easy being a courier in NY, but what exactly makes it so super special?
@redbeardedt34379 жыл бұрын

I hate all this "well, if we made it in America, we couldn't have it affordable, oh BULLSHIT. How often do you buy something like a messenger bag? Or a bike helmet? Or a bicycle? Or shoes? I personally remember a time when an American made frame (LeMond), European components (they're pros, we're not), an American made messenger bag and clothing made in San Francisco were to be had for maybe 25 percent more than Chinese communist slave factory crap. It's amazing that American and European companies that were thriving only twenty years ago are so destitute they export everything to China now, give me a fucking break.
