Hi Ashley! The stores in the flower district don't list prices because their main line of business is with events and corporate accounts. They don't object to selling things to individuals, but it's not their focus. It's definitely not an invitation to haggle. There are normal plant shops in NYC, though I suspect they would have appeared much more mundane in comparison. I think you made the right choice in where to go, so thanks for taking us along with you. And happy birthday! What a great way to celebrate a special occasion. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in New York.

Happy Birthday! I live in upper Manhattan and was in the flower district recently. It's wonderful and you made some real scores. Thanks for taking us along. Didn't know you were supposed to haggle, may try this next time. One store had a Florida Ghost and I want one for Christmas, maybe I could talk them down from $50. Even at 50 I would be ahead with no shipping fees and hot pack for the cold. If you are in NYC again you may enjoy the Union Square Greenmarket which has some very unusual plants for even better prices. It's mostly a vegetable market but they do have houseplants. Union Square is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Thanks again! I watch you all the time and this time I can actually go to the stores you went to.

Great advice! The union square green market is. A great place to look for plants and the quality tends to be better than what you’d find at a big box store or even the high priced plant boutiques

The round leaved ZZ's (6:06) are called Lucky ZZ's!! I bought a pretty large one from one of the plant stores on 28th St. and I love it so much :)

You're right it is a Hawarthia. Recommendation for you in succlents look for aeonium kiwi likes south facing windows its green with pink edges grows i. Clusters

I spent most of my adult life in NYC and 28th St. was always my happy place! Back in the day there were twice as many shops and the deals were amazing. In the spring, every shop has pallets of hyacinth out on the sidewalks and the fragrance was heaven.

Lovely plants there. Those Lithops looks big and juicy and full never seen them like that. I wonder if is constantly alot of direct sun to grow them like that. I keep killing them from overwatering. That is good you can bring plants back have to check which countries you can do that.

The Noble shop is one of the best shops and the owners are quiet intriguing, I got a very healthy plumosa that I'm growing indoors, growing a lot!!! The other flower shop is the Dutch store amazing, but need to go there very early. Happy birthday everyday with thus video🎂⚘️💐

I’m curious what sort of price points you found in NY compared to closer to home. I live in FL now but I’m from SF bay are in CA. I was surprised that plant prices weren’t crazy high in CA when I was there a few months ago because the cost of living is out of control as I know it is in NY. Everything else is insane. I sold my house in 2020 and what I sold it for was crazy. Even eating in a restaurant and buying gas hurts me when I go back to visit. So I was shocked plants weren’t so out of sight.

Super curious if that scindapsis is easier than the moonlight version. That one gives me so much drama compared to the other varieties. I had to chop mine up and prop it and she’s stressing me. I don’t know why it’s so hard. It takes forever to root. I’m rooting in stratum because water was far too slow.

If I see prices are not clearly marked I immediately get suspicious, it feels dishonest like they’ll try charging any exorbitant price they think you might pay. You have to look at them like their silly and be like “No $50 is too much, I’ll pay $35” then the second they try to counteroffer just turn around and walk away “no thank you” and I PROMISE you, they’ll chase you and say “ok for you $35”!! 😏😏 yeah ok my friend $35 it is! LOLOL

I like clarity-be upfront. The example in my previous comment was a real encounter I had last spring.

Unfortunately the “plant district” in NYC is a shadow of it’s former self. High rents & new construction have forced 80% of the plant shops across the river to Jersey. Only 28th St (bet 6-7th Ave) still has a few original shops whereas 15-20 years ago plant & flower stores lined 6th Ave from 26th St up to Herald Square.
