New York City Subway: Snowy Elevated Trains in Manhattan and Bronx

Today's film leaves the underground and shows the only elevated stretches of the subway system that exist today in Manhattan.
There are two such stretches, both along the IRT Seventh Avenue line, more specifically along the (1) service. There is a very short stretch at 125 St, where trains leave the tunnel for only one station. They then travel under ground again up to Dyckman Street, where they reemerge and then run on elevated steel structures all the way to Van Cortlandt Park, 242 St in the Bronx.
The film starts at Dyckman Street, where trains emerge via a beautiful portal. We then go uptown and cross the Harlem River via the Broadway Bridge. A few scenes show trains at 225 St (Manhattan) and 231 St (Bronx), before the film concludes at the other elevated stretch at 125 St back in Manhattan.
Enjoy!

that part of Mahattan is so weird the train remains the same level at Dyckman outside as 168 street which is more than a mile underground because that part of Manhattan on a tall mountain it looks cool

I'm a native NYer but lived in quite a few cities including Washington, DC. The train operators of Doc's metro used to always either not pull in all the way or slightly overshoot their stop point. NY train drivers are by far the best.

I used to take this train from 96st to 231st everyday to get to school which at the time it was John F. Kennedy high school in riverdale. Thank you so much for making this.

The characters from JimJam take this train to work every episode, they would start in Kingsbridge and end in Harlem. Though, the apartment building that the characters live in is on the edge of harlem river, with their address being 150 W 225th Street. And it's located in Marble Hill. And the 125th Street station on the 1 line located in West Harlem. And due to the fact that you have to walk from the 125th Street station (1) to get to whatever job that character has. Well Most of the characters. The only people who take the subway to work are the following people: Jess, Simon, Daisy, Ollie, The Chomp Squad, Sam, Bob, Strawberry Shortcake, Huckleberry Pie, Plum Pudding, Raspberry Torte, Orange Blossom, Lemon Meringue, Huckle, Lowly, Sally, Hilda, Pig Will, Pig Won't and last but not least, Goldbug.

The only ones that do not take the subway to work are Monchhichi and Little Nutbrown Hare. They take the Bx9 bus to work because they are the only ones that work in the bronx. That's what JimJam is. It's about a bunch of people who live in Manhattan, but they work in The Bronx, Marble Hill is a neighborhood in Manhattan even though it's on the other side of the Harlem River, and the Kingsbridge neighborhood is located right by it. It takes 15 minutes for the characters to walk from their Apartment Building to the bus stop, the subway and the Cafe that they hang out at, Most of the characters take the subway to work while a few of the characters take the Bus to work, Monchhichi and Little Nutbrown Hare take the Bx9 bus to fordham plaza. There are also other bus routes as well like the Bx1, Bx2, Bx10, and the Bx20, and also the Bx3 north of 231st Street and the Bx7 south of Kingsbridge and Marble Hill. But we'll focus more on the buses that stop at the intersection of 231st Street and Broadway. The Bx1, Bx10 and Bx20 buses stop on the 231st Street corners while the Bx9 bus stops on Broadway, Under the train tracks, Also, they have a Cafe that they like to eat at. At that Café, they have two waiters, Jim and Jam two Purple and Lime Green J-shaped creatures with limbs, And there's also a 3rd waitress called Star, a Yellow Star, who serves food to the characters, The Cafe has two floors, is located right at the corner of 231st Street and Broadway. The Bank is at the other side of the corner.

Great videos! I fell in love with NYC and especially its subways when I was somewhere around the age of 7 allthough I never been there myselfe since I was 14 in 2012. I've been to a lot of subways around the world but none can compete with NY. Great station architecture and epic trains! R62 is my favorite so far :) Subways here in Germany are cool, but since they're not New York I really need to visit the States again soon - if the flight only wasn't so expensive :/

I always get the impression that Manhattan residents try to hide the history of their Elevated while the rest of New Yorkers now seem to embrace them ! In particular, Long Islanders seem to enjoy using and taking videos on the trains traversing both Queens and Brooklyn. Thanks for video. A map courtesy of Google maps would help us foreigners.

Not to mention the sharp curves between Cypress Hills and Crescent Street. The trains make quite an awesome screech when they run through those curve. Also we run a 10 mph speed restriction on that section of trackage with timers all along that section. Back in the 50's did any of you guys ever joke about diving off the train into Cypress pool ? They recently restored that old El Station and they brought back the old iron-wrought lamps that it originally had. They should do that throughout the entire line. It's a shame that they've gotten rid of those old lamps in much of the El lines and have replaced them with cheap horrible lamps that are out of place with the stations.

Well, the 1 is not the only line with stations in Manhattan not underground. Half of the Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges are in Manhattan, and Harlem - 148th Street on the 3 is in Manhattan and is somewhat outside (after leaving 145th Street, the 3 goes outside to 148th Street).

I am from Russia and here some of my thoughts: 1) why there is a door in the front of the train? Is it for unification of first and all else wagons? If yes, is there a driver cabin in each wagon? 2) is it that slow as it looks like on video? 3) some buildings in the background are really depressing. It can easily compete in depressivness with USSR era districts in Russia:) 4) I like straight streets and avenue in USA, just like pre USSR Saint-Petersburg.

All NY subway cars have end doors. On the longer, 75 foot cars these doors are locked for safety. On all other cars, these doors are unlocked. Most cars are permanently coupled in 4 or 5 car sets, so doors are unlocked within the set but are locked leading to the full-width cabs at each end of the set. There are two sets per train, making 8 or 10 car trains depending on the line, so one can only go between cars within each set. Some older cars are coupled in pairs and only have half-width cabs, meaning that one can walk between all cars in the train. A few of the R62A cars (the ones seen in this video) are set up as single cars, and do have half-width cabs. The subways typically operate between 30 and 45 MPH. In some places, such as the 60th Street tube, they can go a bit faster due to steep downgrades. And yes, many buildings in NY are quite drab looking, but we do have some spectacular architecture around.

In Manhattan most of the streets run relatively straight. But in the outer boroughs and throughout the USA outside of NYC we have many roads with lots and lots of curves. Also throughout the subway system of NYC there are a lot of curves and grades.

0:00 - 1:09/ Ladies and gentlemen, you just watched a station with a film connection. Remember GHOST? 1990 film starring Patrick Swayze. The scene where his character Sam gets harrassed by the subway ghost. Remember when the BMT subway cars emerge out of a tunnel and suddenly become IRT subway cars? Well, there's your station AND tunnel! The Dyckman St. Station was built to accommodate the undulating topography of Upper Manhattan. I believe the plaque above the tunnel bears the name FT. GEORGE TUNNEL. 🇵🇷🇺🇸😎
