The first I can't breathe guy (I think we were supposed to say his name but I forgot to) died while getting arrested over untaxed cigarettes (selling them on the streets). New York state and the city of New York have extremely high taxes on cigarettes as part of an effort to discourage smoking. It's very common for people to buy cigarettes in states with far lower tobacco taxes (South Carolina is the best for it) and drive them north to be sold in places like New York City. Naturally, the government of New York opts to keep a terrible law and double down on it rather than consider getting rid of it. Consider this your KZbin context information bubble
