The old neighborhoods, bring back memories of my childhood in the old Italian neighborhood my grandparents lived in, in CT. Every night we had dinner and sat on the stoop outside as the neighbors would come by and they would chat together in Polish and Italian. Those were great memories. Thanks.

Astoria is a killer neighborhood. I had tons of friends that lived in Astoria. It’s the Greek capital of Queens. Grew up watching the Bronx Tale. Such a great movie.

Greeks don’t live there anymore. They still own a lot of the properties but they rent them out and live in Whitestone or king island now. Seeing a Greek in Astoria is rare these days. You’re more likely to see Todd the software developer than Stavros the plumber lol.

Like Greg "Pitbull" from Food and Foodprints, I grew up in Astoria, Queens. This vdo was nostalgic. Many of the places shown in the vdo are quite familiar to me. Grew up in the hood playing stoop ball, dodge ball, handball and other inner city games. Greg will know what I'm talking about. Dad used to take me to Astoria pool every summer and that's where I learned how to swim. I still return to the hood on visit b/c family and relatives still live there. Astoria has gone through a lot of change and gentrification, less mom & pop stores, less Greek and Italian dominant, but still a lot of cultural diversity depending on what the latest immigrant wave is. Also, a lot of Manhattanites and millennials have moved into Astoria. Cheaper to live in Queens than Manhattan.
@FoodandFootprints5 жыл бұрын
Minnie C. Hi Minnie! Nice seeing you in the comments. Definitely know those games - brings back a lot of memories. So true about the changes over the years, but glad to see there are some special mom and pop stores still going strong from when I grew up there.

Astoria is my old neighborhood where I was born and grew up until I was 8 years old and moved to Florida in 1981. I have great childhood memories living on 27th street and 21 avenue with my grandparents and my mom and my brother in the 1970s and I lived in the Acropolis Apartments and then to Cresent Street across from the Catholic High School. I miss my old neighborhood a lot! Great video!

Whenever you watch a video about the foods in NYC, it makes you feel that there are so many different kinds of foods you can try from all over the world. But when you actually go there, it is hard to try more than 3 or 4 of them, because each of them is usually very expensive... One of the differences between the fantasy and reality about NYC...

The slices looks good, nice little char on the crust. If you are ever in Bay Ridge, you should check out the Pizza Wagon on 5th Ave and 87th St. Just a few small tables on the inside, they have sidewalk takeout. They have been around for a LONG time. They fly under the radar and are a hidden gem for those who aren't local. They are old school and only accept cash!
@HereBeBarr5 жыл бұрын
I did a video there a long time ago, would love to go back. Are you a local ?
@crazeyjoe5 жыл бұрын
@@HereBeBarr I had no idea you already been there. I used to be a local, I lived on both sides of the Verrazano. I live near the left side of the US now. That is great that you already "vid" there. I will have to find it and post it on FB. Next time I get a change to get out there and get to go to The Pizza Wagon, I am going to photobomb the place, lol. Well, if you didn't already have cred before, you sure as hell do now. Hidden gems like that as well as the slice of pie at that deli, the tourists really get cheated by not hitting those spots and only going for the ones that get all the press. One more thing, this has to be the best, upfront pizzeria that is on the west coast. It's called "Bronx Pizza," they have all the Bronx "decor." If you check out their online menu, it's what they don't serve that cracks me up and possibly you as well! Lastly, thank you for replying and love your channel!

The bar was Coffey's Corner 30th ave and 45th. I was born Astoria General Hospital in 61'.Grew up on Steinway st. and 23rd ave.Went to PS 84 41st bet 23 ave and Ditmars blvd,then to PS 10 from 73'-76', then Bryant High school.Confirmation was at St. Joe's. My father watched some of Bronx Tale being filmed. Use to get my haircut at "She Goes To Your Head" My grandfather moved to Astoria from Europe around 1916. Went to the old Lowes theater 28th ave and Steinway as a kid. We would buy a pea shooter (straw) and peas for .5 cents on Steinway st. and be bad kids inside the movie theater. It was a dollar to see a movie at the Astoria movie theater. Astoria pool was .10 cents to get in. Rizzos pizza was the best back then. Villa Gaudios was also good. There was a Hofbrau German resturant on Steinway st. bet. 30th ave and 28th ave that we went to alot. Benkirts German bakery was excellent also. They had the blue laws back then. Most stores closed on sundays except for resturants, and bakeries. It seems so crowded now. It was quiet back then. It was mostly Italian,German and Irish when I was growing up. There wasn't the Greek presence then as there is today. The best Italian resturant was called. "The Bank" which was across from Quinns funeral home on B'way and 35thst If I remember correctly. Great place to have grown up. Lucky me! For bakery pizza try Rose and Joes last stop on train 31st and Ditmars.
