The tombs one of the most feared places in Manhattan. Even though the tombs was demolished over 100 years ago the Manhattan Detention Centre is called the tombs by those that live in the surrounding areas or those who are unfortunately housed there.

Worked there for decades then the new one was built and connected in the 1990’s. I never lived anywhere near the area as a CO. 🤷🏼

When watching old reruns of Barney Miller, they frequently referenced the Tombs and the name made me always think it was a place of sorrows. Being a New Yorker, though not from that part of the state, I never wanted to see it because of this.

Got shuffled through the tombs my 21st birthday weekend. Apparently, it's frowned upon to have a trunk full of fireworks for memorial day. 100 center st Manhattan, called the tombs but not sure if its the same building.

I have never been to New York but I totally recall the cast of Barney Miller referring to sending people, specifically the more mentally ill people to "The Tombs". I always thought I misunderstood what they were saying.

The last part of. Herman Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener” takes place in The Tombs. Bartleby seems to succumb to the general gloom of the place more than to any specific maltreatment.
