A message from our 2020 artists Sara Wordsworth, Jeff Calhoun, Tidtaya Sinutoke, Isabella Dawis, Jesse Sanchez and Maria Torres.
2020 has been New York Theatre Barn's ambitious year yet. We found new ways to develop and tell new stories, and evolved our current programs, like our New Works Series and Choreography Lab, presenting them as virtual hybrid presentations at the intersection of theatre and film, which:
-Showcased the development of 70 Original Musicals
-Lifted up the work of 119 Writers
-Made space for over 300 Artists
-Increased our Global Audience
-Created Theatre Barn Records - a new imprint of Broadway Records and dedicated to new musicals in development
-Collaborated with Full Out Creative and Broadway Dance Center to film live excerpts from 2 new musicals staged for the first time with moving cameras
For the past 13 years, New York Theatre Barn has been a leader in the development of original musicals. This year, a global pandemic and a systemic reckoning gave us the unique opportunity to empower artists, lift up culture shifting stories, support our community, and make musical theatre development the most accessible that it’s ever been both for artists and audiences. As we look toward 2021, we are embarking on a new era in our story -- working towards a commitment to paying all artists and staff members. We are working with our community to raise $10,000 by the end of 2020 to support the development of 50 new musicals in 2021. If musical theatre storytelling can manifest profound change, so can we. Let's see what develops.
