I've been taught since I was small that you can't trust police officers or taxis right away, like it's possible for someone to show up at your door dressed as a cop and say your family member's been arrested or something, come with me to the station, and then they'll just kidnap you. You need to ask to see their badge or for them to say the name of your family member or whatever. If they can't prove they're a real cop, they can't legally do anything to you. With the taxis, if you want to know the legitimacy of a taxi in a strange city, use the airport wifi or something to find a real taxi service or two and download their app. If you can't, search for the taxi line where a lot of people are also getting on. If all you see are stray taxis, look for stand-outs (as in the taxi light is out, no ads on the side when all the other ones have some, the driver is wearing a furry suit I dunno) and avoid them. And, just, common sense. Use it. Take your time.
